GUISE AND DISGUISE This year Guise and Disguise fulfilled its intended purpose by ietixtly tilting pirt in presentations 1n the fall and spring The club was headed by a talented president, Richard Thomas One of our new teachers, Vliss Edith Stewart, proyed herself to be an mterested and worthy advisor The only drawback to the club was the fact that the girls outnumbered the boys three to one This proyed to be a hlndiclp in selection of plays All in all the club had a successful year Many of this years members who are sophomores and juniors promise to be the backbone of next year s club 74 MODERN DANCE CLUB The Modern Dance Club, directed by Miss Lillian Berg, has helped to promote self-expression and gracefulness through dance. In appreciation of their long years of service to our happy in that we had the opportunity to have known them school, we of the Top would like to pay them special tribute. The influence of their personalities will remain with us for ELWOOD CORNOG years to come. Mr. Elwood Cornog came to Summit High in 1926 suc- ceeding his brother Allison as athletic instructor. For thirty years Coach has developed the bodies and physical skills of Summits youth not of course without instilling in these young men good sportsmanship As coach of the football basketball and baseball squads Mr Cornog Won four con ference championships in football eight in basketball and seven in baseball One of the highlights of his career came in the 1929 30 school year when Summit High won the State football and baseball championships Much to our regret Coach Cornog with his wide grin and slow long stride will not be present at the Summit High scene next year Miss Tilla Thomas arrived at Summit High in 1918 A Phi Betta Kappa from Western Reserve University she also studied at Wellesley and did graduate work at Columbia N Y U and the Sorbonne in Paris Miss Thomas originally taught Spanish and French but 1n recent years she has con centrated entirely on the latter language In addition to having a record laboratory which is something unusual for a high school Mademoiselle Thomas has been recognized by leading universities and educational associations as an outstanding language teacher Of course Miss Thomas would be the French Club Advisor however she has also served for many years as advisor of the Service Committee Miss Thomas has truly been a symbol of unselfish devotion to her students and her school Summit High will be difficult to visualize without her TILLA THOMAS ELMORE FURTH 1929 was Mr Elmore Furth s first year as wood shop 1n structor at Summit High One of the men behind the scenes woodshop classes have designed and constructed the stage sets used for the G O Show In addition to wide participation in civic affairs including the Athaneum Trailside Museum and the Union County Industrial Arts Association of which he is past president Mr Furth has served for a number of years as advisor of the Safety Committee The loss of the man in the white smock with his friendly hello will be keenly felt at Summit High a , , Q S . I Y 1: 30 hm., 6' ... ' 'vw' 'Q SOCCER Summit High School's 1955 soccer team finished the season this year with four wins, four losses and three ties. Under the terrific leadership of Coach Elmer Haldenwang, the team won two out of its lirst three games, beating Mont- clair and Cranford, and tieing with Kearny. The next three games weren't quite as good - a loss to Verona and ties to East Orange and Cranford in two hard-playing, exciting games. Pulling briefly out of the slump, Summit won its next two games only to finish the season in a second slump. The team played well against Chatham but lost both games. Summit is proud to have lineman Roger Pennington, a junior, elected to All-State Soccer. Danny Leech, another terrific lineman won an Honorable Mention. Bruce Wilk- inson was high scorer with six goals for the season. Tom Corlett, a great lineman, though injured early in the sea- son, returned to play great ball. Mike Barr was goalie and along with the strong backfield saved many a point. Webb Van Winkle, a junior, shined in the backfield this year again, and is expected along with many returning men to form the backbone of next year's Summit High Soccer Team. Attendance at the home games was considerably above last year's. Coach Haldenwang has done a great job again this year and he deserves all the praise of Summit High. A Lir- E-.L 'r :Au-ui' 6X 5 I g ff if-fi by '39, - 3 Zi K ' ,, ','lll7b V Fnrsf row W Wrlltes E Holf D Barenborg T Corleff J Davidson W Meineke Rear row A Langenus B Carrier W Badgley L Coleman T Sandham H Smlfh R Adams B Wslkmson Mr Cornog BASKETBALL Summit Highs basketball team had one of its poorest records during the 1955 56 season wmnmg just three of eighteen games However those three wms were rn conference games resulting in a fifth place finish rn the Suburban Conference Captains Tom Corlett and Dave Barenborg were the big scorers Corlett finished with yust two short of 200 pomts while Barenborg scored 133 Muggs Coleman and Tom Sandham were next wlth 99 and 89 pomts respectrvely Following them were ten players with anywhere from 12 to 60 pomts Re bounding honors went to Muggs Coleman who snagged 150 rebounds while Tom Sandham was a close sec ond with 141 Dick Adams john Davidson Walt Mexncke ohn Mernert Eddie Rrllo and Jackie Robinson sparked the team at various pomts in the season It was not easy however for Coach Elwood Cornog to find five of the above ten players who all hrt a hot streak at the same time Summit definitely got off on the wrong foot at the start of the season Eight battles were fought before the team could claim a vrctory But when Glen Ridge came roaring into Summlt hoping for their own first win a different Summit team greeted them Fast and furious action ensued and when the dust had settled Summit was vrctorrous by a 42 point spread On a snowy anuary nrght Mrllburn was host to this different Summit team rn their gym Snowy nights rn Mrllburn seem to affect Summit teams because for the second straight year Summit emerged on top rally mg from a twelve point deficit to topple the highly favored Millers A sharpshootmg Verona team put Summit on the losmg trarl again Four more losses and Summit found rtself host to the Mrllburn team No rally was needed this time for Summit led all the way holding off a second half Miller rally Two more losses closed out Coach Cornogs thrrtreth and last season as basketball coach Although their record may not show rt the players never gave up and realize that they would not have won the three games that they did wrthout the excellent coaching of Mr Cornog . . , . , . , .
