And the school grew -No other words could be more suit- able to Summit High School this year than these. For this past fall, when the doors of the school swung open, the student body stepped into an edifice with a million and a half dollar addition. Proud, in deed, are we that the people of our community have taken interest in us and increased our educational facilities to such a great extent. For this reason we have incorporated this advancement into our '51 yearbook, for as our school grows, we grow. Here we are learning, working, and building for our futures. As you go through our yearbook, you will come upon particular verses of the poem below which has been written as a symbol of our growth and the importance of our educational development. For it is only through educational development that the youth of today will grow to be the citizens and leaders that will build he world of tomorrow. Editor. We grow: Not quickly, For growth which is perfect is slow. We learng And think wisely, And in wisdom and knowledge we'll grow. We work? For the future: For this troubled world that we know. We are needed To build ln a world That is filled With destruction-ee In a world that wants us to grow! EDEIIICATE We, the Class of 1951, dedicate this yearbook to the Faculty of Summit High School. We are deeply grateful that the people who have been our teachers for the past four years have so well understood the problems of young people today. They have given not only ot their time and professional ability, but have given us a sense of the true values of life. Because of them we go forth into a confused world with some sense of direction. g M 1 YRD.T0 G0 1 f - ' .536 me f 2 99'-3 . 695' A CQ, m ay 212 TABLE 0F CUNTENTS ADMINISTRATION SENIORS .,,,.,.,,,,,,, AND FACULTY SUPERLATIVES ....... The Chorus, under the able direction of Mr. Daniel Kautzman, was a real credit to our school. All year long strange sounds could be heard emanating from the new music room as the students rehearsed dilligently. On December 22, the third annual alumni carolling get- together wds held, followed by a party at the Y.W.C.A. It was a great success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. In February the G.O. Show, Finian's Rainbow, was presented: and in May the annual Spring Concert was given. The chorus really did a line job this year. Let's hope that it will continue to do as well in future years. Last fall Summit High booters completed a ten game schedule with three wins and seven losses. However, the kind of soc- cer played by the team is rnuch better than that indicated by the season's record. For although many games were lost, ev- ery opponent was pressed hard till the very last second of play, and only after the final gun went off was the outcome of the game definitely decided. Five retuming lettermen formed the nucleus of the team. These players were Fred Swick, center forward: Mike Haupt, center half back: Ray Guenther, right half: Ierry Sartorius, outside right: and Francis King, outside left. Swick provided the scoring punch for the team. Of the twelve goals scored by the team as a whole he scored six of them. Haupt was a very potent booter, and it was usually his toe that moved the ball deep into enemy territory. With many first-stringers and first rate substitutes coming back next year Coach Holdenwang can look forward to a win- ning season. But regardless of the final score, soccer as played by Summit High School will always be worth watching. in my . 1950 SOCCER SCHEDULE Opponents S.H.S. Grisby, A. Petracco, M. Barker, I. Badgely, D. Crann, This year basketball at Summit High School was at its best. Our team had an overall record of 17 wins and 5 losses and was the trophy winner of the Suburban Conference and Northern New Iersey Sec- tion 2 Group III. Leader of the Summit attack was Sonny Dennis. During the regular season of 14 wins and 4 losses, he scored a record- breaking 307 points, bringing his three year varsity total to 713. Also instrumental in the scoring department were Dick Dia- kos, Ioe Kenney, Bill Warren, Pete Mc- Hale, and Howie Danks. Our success in the State Tournament was undoubtedly the highlight of the sea- son. We played the first two games as the underdogs and in both cases came out on top. In the initial contest Spring- field Regional was our opponent, and we won by a 52-48 score. Sonny, taking ad- vantage of his ability to drive, took the K. Giles, I. Ridley, D. Currey. I. V. A 57-44 win over Hillside gave us the section trophy and sent us into the semi-final round against Engle- wood. Teachers and students alike turned out to the Englewood game: however, the boys from Bergen County were hot that night and eliminated Summit to the tune of 67-44. The regular season was marked by an eleven game winning streak. The string was ended at Millburn when Summit was defeated 58-49. Summit had an undefeat- ed season at home until Regional de- feated us in the final week of play. Although ten of the seventeen mem- bers on the varsity are seniors this year, such players as the Grisby brothers, Don- ald Crann, and Paul McGiffin promise Coach Cornog another fine season in fifty-two. 1950 BASKETBALL SCHEDULE tx Group Ill, Section ll Uhamps 545' W 5 'ffjl ll. ,X l 1' Q Opponents SHS Opponents 46 40 Morristown Roselle 43 Clifford Scott 32 Westfield 59 Verona 52 Madison 57 Caldwell 66 Chatham 57 Glen Ridge 61 Millburn 49 Regional 36 Chatham 55 Regional 52 Linden 56 Hillside 57 Englewood 44 State Tourn ament Games Bottom row: C. As it was, both teams finished the season with a league record of four wins and one loss, but the Hillbillies took the crown because of their win over us. Outstanding offensive star this year was half back Ioe Kenney. Through the course of the season he scored nine touchdowns, passed for four more, and booted three extra points. Second in scoring was Sonny Dennis, who had three touchdowns and one extra point to his credit. After losing its two opening games, Summit entered the win column with a second half victory over Millburn. A trio of touchdowns by Kenney in the third and fourth quarters broke the scoreless deadlock. Glen Ridge was downed 13-6 for Summit's second Win, Bill loynerf scoring the winning touch- down on a line plunge. The most thrilling game was the Hilltoppers 26-18 defeat of Madison. Kenney took the opening kick-off on his own 10 and raced the length of the field for a 90 yard TD. His pass to Vern Grisby late in the first quarter was good for another score. Three long runs marked the Maroon and White victory over Caldwell. Dennis and Kenney each raced 85 yards for touchdowns, with Ioe contributing the third TD on a run of 45 yards. Much of the team's success was dependent upon the excellent coaching of Mr. Kandrat and his competent staff. The 'team outscored their opponent in twelve of their sixteen games, was the Suburban Con- ference winner, and participated in the Greater Newark Tournament. Despite the fact that they lost their first game in this tourney to Nutley, the squad was still the pride and joy of Summit rooters. A tight defense and fine pitching were the outstanding factors in the team's success. Pitchers Chet Cornog, Dave Moroney, and Guy Grasso kept the opposing batters from mur- dering the ball, and a well coordinated infield of Mike Madonna, Ioe Dasti, Fred Swick, and Tony Campano fielded cleanly what balls were hit. As very few hitters were ever able to hit the ball into the outfield, fly chasers Howie Taylor and Don Culbertson had a cornpartively easy job. On three occasions the opposition was held hitless. Cornog did the job twice, while Grasso contributed the third no-hitter. Summit's offensive drive was sparked by the timely hitting of Moroney. He led the team in batting, edging out Dasti by a few points for the crown. Badgely, T. Murray, D. Culbertson, F. Swick, M. Barker I. Dasti, I. Stortz, R. Ayers, F. Gates, P. The answer to these questions is-those ten competent, viva- cious cheerleaders who proudly represent S.H.S. in every interscholastic athletic contest. Without these gals success would have been impossible for our teams. Not only are these girls peppy, but they are also courageous. Their bravery was shown in the darkness of the Seton Hall Gymnasium, where the lights were off for 22 minutes. They led the crowd in songs and cheers, thereby calming the specta- tors, who might well have been panic-stricken otherwise. Captaining the squad is Ieanne Flagler, with the able assistance of Coach Lukens. In order to become a member of the team, a girl must go through the elimination process. This nerve-wracking procedure comes each spring when all sophomores and junior aspirants dis- play their technique of cheering know-how. Al- though more than forty girls try out, only six of them are chosen by a board of judges, consist- ing ot the cheerleaders and the faculty.
