These activities have developed until during the present school year, the amount of money handled by them is about 37,000 Under the present system all of the bank accounts of the existing organiza- tions have been consolidated into one account opened at a local bank and known as The Student's Activities Fund of Summit High School. The responsibility of handling these funds is centralized under one faculty member known as the Financial Secretary. Each organization has a treasurer who is a bookkeeping student and who transacts all business with the Financial Secretary instead of the local bank. These transactions are recorded in detail in the books of that organization and summarized in the books of that organization and summarized in the books of the Financial Secretary by two students acting as head bookkeepers. It may be for some, but certainly not for the members of the Senior Class, who on that night proved to be a real hit. The only bad omen was a sleet storm early in the evening--but after the rain comes the sunshine ! The play from beginning to end was extremely exciting, humorous, adven- turous, and romantic. A thunderstorm, the quiet movements of Lush, the butler, in the old Applejohn library 5 a young man, tired of doing the same things, in the same place, in the same way, and at the same time every day, a 'pretty young heroine and her aunt, greatly distressed at the thought of selling the family home- stead, the coming of a lady, a Russian dancer, who tells a wild tale of being pursued by the famous Bolshevik spy, Ivan Borolskyg the sudden arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Pengrad who mysteriously look around for something, a dream with such things as a treasure, a beautiful woman, some blood-thirsty pirates: and finally the clever outwitting of some burglars and the Finding of the treasure, are a few of the many scenes which made everyone present glad they had come. Ambrose Applejohn also proved that adventure and romance can be found at homeg especially romance, for he very surprisingly discovered Poppy was just the kind of girl he had always liked. The cast is to be complimented upon the fine performance, and to the coach, Merlin S. Temple, must again go the praise for his untiring efforts in making the Senior play a great success. 74 I U - P no 1930. Mr. Temple's latest musical show, The Girl in Blue Gingham went over beautifully and made a big hit with the two audiences that saw it. The plot was choice, the music snappy, the costumes very appropriate, and the dances delightful. The story began with graduation day at college, the goal at last reached by the seniors, who were all wearing their caps and gowns. Bill, the big handsome hero, arrives upon the scene, accompanied by Professor Lane, and Molly, the lovely campus heroine, comes in later. It's evident that Bill is deeply in love with her and he offers her just another one of his many proposals. This time she accepts and everything is now going nicely. Molly meets Bill's mother, and they tell their secret to all their classmates. Suddenly, without warning, Molly's brother breaks in telling her to come home right away, as her mother is sick. He warns her not to bring any of those city people along. Next we see Molly on the first day at home in the midst of her family. Her father is in despair because of the bean pickers' strike. This means that his whole crop must go to waste. Then enter Bill and Daisy followed by their classmates, who have come to be bean pickers . The third act takes place three weeks later. The beans have been saved by the city folk and Pa Jones is reconciled to Mol1y's engagement and fiance. Bill's mother makes everyone happy by buying the farm and using it as a summer place for Renfield students. Congratulations, Mr. Temple! It was the best yet. QMS Senior Theatre Party Once more the Class of 1930 traveled to town. This time the attraction was Marco's Millions , presented by the Theatre Guild. The comedy-drama itself was extremely entertaining and interesting, and the congenial crowd, bent on enjoy- ing itself, certainly added to the pleasure of the party. The play is based upon the Polos' famous business enterprise in the East. One sees how, even so early as this, money and power were the outstanding character- istics of the merchant of the VVestern World. The scenes were beautifully planned and staged. Throughout, one felt the Eastern splendor and Medieval grandeur. One feature not planned for by the producers entertained us exceedingly, and that was the Emperor's band, as por- trayed by a portable victrola, off-stage. Miss White and Miss Herrman were the Faculty sponsors of our party and Mrs. Duguid, Mrs. Ebel, Mrs. Bludworth, and Mrs. Holmes were our chaperons. Several private cars, one large bus, and the Delay, Linger and Wait , conveyed us to the theatre and back. If all the school undertakings are as successful, we'll soon be noted as the Social Center or the Country Club . 76 1930. T E u g i 1930? It was postponed from the 28th of February to the 28th of March on account of the death of Mr. Cowan, a member of the Board of Education. This year's Prom outdid past years in every way. The Benton Harbor Orchestra was excellent. Gay Young. with whom we are all familiar, took part in it, every now' and then le11ding his voice to the choruses. The decorations consisted of crepe paper rib- bons descending from the ceiling to the sides of the room. The lights were beau- tifully covered with similar crepe paper ribbons. Ice cream and delicious refresh- ments were served for the supper dance. Strawberry punch was obtainable all through the evening. Mr. McGiffin and Mr. Hawley announced the dance num- bers and specialties. Immediately following the supper dance there was a Grand March, the girls lined up outside one door and the boys outside the other, accord- ing to numbers which they had received as they entered. As the line marched in, each person met his original partner. Another specialty was a spot light dance. The lights were turned down and each couple picked by the light was eliminated from the dance. The winners of this number were Mr. Bob Tapperson and his partner. The hostesses were seated along the west side of the gym. They were: Mr. and Mrs. John B. Dougal Mrs. Frederick Taff Mr. and Mrs. Albert J. Bartolomew Mrs. B. S. Webs-ter Mr. and Mrs. John S. Voegtlen Mr. and Mrs. John Dietz Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher Thornton Mr. and Mrs. L. T. Pease Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Underhill Mr. and Mrs. Chester Lane Mr. and Mrs. H. Glazebrook Mr. and Mrs. H. Marshall Mr. and Mrs. James Dunsmore We extend our heartiest congratulations and thanks to Miss Enslin and the members of the Prom Committee for their great success in giving one of the most delightful Proms ever held in Summit High School. GNXN9 G. O. Dance First of all, the dance was meant to be a class for beginners, so that some unnamed, but outstanding Senior boys might learn to gracefully push a girl around the dance Hoor without crushing her feet or knocking anyone else down. It was all of this and more! At least a hundred couples showed up where forty had been expected. A five piece impromptu orchestra urged everyone to dance and every- one did. As this was the first attempt at anything of the sort, the faculty decided to have it last only from 3 o'clock to 4:30. There was no better assurance of the delightful afternoon than the Oh, geesll' and So soons ? of the crowd when Home, Sweet, Home was played. The Committee composed of Burton Kaufman, Fannie Flatow, and Charles Foss, is to be congratulated. Miss White and Mr. Bartholomew were largely responsible for the success of the enterprise. We hope there are lots more of these impromptus in store. 77 JMB UMC SC HHHQGD GDL 4 V Azg. X ' Q, if Y mf A M . A.,. sums cuss crsmvs 1 5 N Ii 1 , .je - , 'A TNQ , fx A 2 ifosmdu! Hou: ns' Q f . Qffd Girls' Basketball This year a new plan has been introduced into the field of girls' athletics. Summit was one of the first schools to try this plan. It is a plan whereby a more friendly attitude is created between the opposing schools. The squads from each school were divided into teams so that the two schools would be playing with each other rather than against each other. Refreshments were served after each game. DEAR Mlss F LATOW : . This year was marked by the linal adoption, after years of agitation, of the School Finance Plan. It had long been felt by many of those in close touch with the financial affairs of the school that some regulation of the business end of the various activities of the school was needed. They thought that in a school the size of Summit High, certain of the organizations could not earn enough through student support to do justice to their work, that th'ere were too many campaigns for money during the year, and that there were ways to reduce the almost excessive call for the student's money. They said that every organization is supported by the school, and should act like a school activity, not as an individual club. For this reason, those whose incomes exceed their expenditures should help the less fortunate activities. Due to much opposition to a system which would cover the entire financing of every organization, a compromise plan was adopted by the Student Council. This plan provides for a 33.00 Activities Ticket, covering class and G. O. dues, admission to all home athletic events. and a subscription to The Tower. It also calls for a tax of IOZJ on the gross receipts of each organization to form a reserve for the more needy activities. A committee is to be appointed each May to regu- late expenditures. The success of this plan depends upon every student. If they buy the Activi- ties Ticket in the fall, they will help nearly everyone-and themselves. If they do not, things will be as bad as before. Accordingly. we are asking the help of every student in this plan, which we are sure is to benefit the whole school. Very truly yours, THE SCHOOL FINANCE COMMITTEES. P.S.: VVhy not use your bank savings account to have 53.00 ready in Sep- tember? 118 1930 . fm n u 1- . 1930 lo Illlllll II mm nun Il III mu 'i ' L ,f 13 9 n u u n nunuuuuiiiilin UUEITI Q 5, 5 1 0 C Fmls If aught in these pages Your spirit enrages, Consider before you give voice. CSNXNQ Last Word It is impossible to close this book without a word of appreciation for those who have helped to publish the Top . Jack Beach, who has gener- ously loaned us the use of lhis camera and his time, has made possible many snap-shot features, the foremost being the Home Room Ads. Madelaine Davies, although a member of our Board, has been so outstandingly helpful and has given so much first aidl' to almost every department in time of need, that we must thank her separately. jack Bachelor has done much to make the ads more attractive. To the Top subscription force, too much praise cannot be given. Though we leave Mr. Hawley until last, our appreciation has not run dry. His guidance, his many hours spent with the Board, and 'his belief in us and our ideas, has done more to publish the 1930 animal than most of our readers will ever know. The book, we hope, will serve you as a record and souvenir of the school year now and in the future. If it does this, and does so entertainingly, we feel more than repaid for the work and time put into it. May the 1931 Top Board have the best of luck and success.
