SULLIVAN HIGH SCHOOL BAND A blare of trumpets! A roll of drums! And the best marching band in the State of Indiana comes snappily down Sportland Field. Under the direction of two gorgeous drum majors, Ruth Keenan and Rachel Everhart, the band spells out S. H. S. and executes pin wheels and other such intricate designs that even Mr. Melbourne is somewhat confused. Never before in the history of S. H. S. has a band had such smooth coordination and perfect timing, and who is responsible for the band? None other than that A-l band master, Tolman Gharst. Let's take a little closer look at our band. The girls in our flute section are Mary Evelyn Ivy and Rosemary Snyder, freshmen. In the clarinet section, we see Ward McKinley. Clyde McMillan. Jr. Paul Musty Fair. Maunce Wright. Bob Lowry, and Marianne Hallbeck. Curt Wheeler, there in the sax section, won Second Division honors in the state solo and ensemble contest held at Bloomington last March. Others in the saxophone section are Maxine Ray. Loretta Wright. Rita Kearney. Jack Buckley, and Rosemarie Scully. Billie Pollock holds her own in the bassoon section. This is the first year for the bassoon in the S. H. S. Band. There are Loren Peck and Mary Ellen Andrews: they won Second Division honors on their cornets. Bill Biddle. Philip Hurbaugh. Miriam Smith, Georgene Barrick. and John Kirk also swing a mean cornet. Those students with the alto horns are Bob Gambill. Zoe Harhaugh. Betty Andrews. and Renatta Cunningham. Zoe won Second Division in the state contest. The boy with the black curly hair and the big baritone horn won Firs Division in the state contest- Joe Ed Thomas. The other young man with the baritone is Wayne Waggoner, a senior. Paul Peck took First Division in the trombone solo section and a trombone quartette composed of Bill Williams. Doris Reeves. Rosalie Arnett, and Lexter Wright won Second Division in the ensemble group. Other members of the trombone section are Bob Lucas, Kathleen Sims, and Frances Dix. Those students with the big sousaphones wrapped 'round their necks are Bessie Reeves. Jack Stokes, and Leila Ryan. Bessie and Leila won Second Division in the state contest for piano solos and Bessie placed Second Division in student directing. The gal making the noise like a thunder storm is Ruth Jeanette Robbins. She's playing the new set of tympani. Our snappy drummers are Bill Ford, Bill Martin. Betty Turpen. Jinny McGuire. Dwane Spencer, and Stewart Ross. The tinkling of the lyrn is rendered by Mary Jean Lowry and Marjorie Richmond. Fourteen of the band members placed in the Third and Fourth Division. Vermont McCoskey and Jeanette Snavely, junior high school band members, won Second Division for baton twirling. Bessie Reeves and Paul Peck will compete for national honors at Battle Creek. Michigan. Our band won First Division in marching at district and state contests. For the first time in the history of Sullivan High School the band will go to a national contest this year at Battle Crock. Fifty-six of those snappy uniforms the band members are wearing were presented to the bond by the Band Parents Club, the band's most loyal boosters This club was organized four years ago to robe funds for uniforms. The club sponsors one activity each month. This year there have been bake sales and rummage sales; a home talent play, Your Face Is Familiar ; a Valentine dance; and a bridge-euchre-bunco party at the Now Gym. The new set of tympani and the new bassoon are gifts of the club. Officers of the club are Lex Robbins, president; William Ryan, vice-president; Mrs. Louise Patton, secretary, and Mrs. Harry Richmond, treasurer. Past presidents are: J. Hurley Drake. A1 Markee. and John Harhaugh. Social events of the year were a Thanksgiving pot luck xup|x-r and a spring picnic at the park.
