i YPISTS 0 ? necu ncL Our purpose in the publication of this book is to picture not so much the year 1953-54 as to record the events of a typical year at Suffolk High School. While the staff has taken some liberties with dates and the sequence of events, it is our hope that the reader will find our presentation suitable and complete. If this volume serves as a reminder of four of the best years of your life, then we have accomplished our purpose, a tribute to our Alma Mater. s ■£ New Senate n fw oeO° n „j « 3.V° i 6 0 1 foo 3 , 1 4 Vw fot WHAT DO THEY DO IN SCHOOL ALL 1 A rfdmivtiAtnAtiwt MR. In previous years, it has been said that Suffolk High School did not schedule enough Group II teams to try for the trophy but this year we met three con¬ ference teams and were voted back in the running. Playing ten games, the Raiders terminated their season with a .500 average. The loss of 8 lettermen and injuries to Jimmy Annas, Terry Rountree, Clarence Hurt, Austin Darden, Billy Earl Russell, and Bobby Turner which kept them out of one or more games, conspired to give us a somewhat mediocre season in Red Raider history in spite of our Group II Championship. On this occasion the members of the Gladys Yates Tri-Hi-Y literally deck the halls with pine, holly, and fragrant cedar garlands. For nearly a decade now this has been their warmly anticipated holiday contribution. In addition to their customary school and civic duties the club fixed boxes of home made candy for the patients at Patrick Henry Hospital. The D.E. Christmas Tree. XdcUtlMClC ' rfyoliday ' PxefcaxatiotM The Civic Samaritan Tri-Hi-Y proudly exhibits its collection of Christmas stockings filled for distribu¬ tion to a dozen and a half children in the community whose parents were unable to supply these very necessary remembrances. These girls also devoted several of their holiday hours to manning a booth in the local post office where the Christmas Seals of the Tuberculosis Association were on sale. Mrs. G. Miss Ann Hines, holder of an A.B. degree from the college of William and Mary, works with classroom teachers throughout the city system in the planning and execution of the artistic projects which supplement the regular curriculum. In the High School, Miss Hines meets two classes daily. The first period class has worked with pencil, charcoal, pastels, water color, pen and ink, and done string painting.
