Suffield Ambulance Volunteer ... a winner, achiever, and most importantly, a true friend. It is with fondness and gratitude that we, the senior class, dedicate the 1988 Sagitta to Mrs. Rebecca Gibson- Laemel. While she has won many honors and awards, it is her contributions to Suffield High School that distinguish this remarkable person. Her warmth radiates, making her a special friend to all who know her. Mrs. Gibson-Laemel ' s concern for others, shown through her roles as friend, teacher, and active leader for Project Care, are some of the wonderful attributes she brings to Suffield High School every day. Mrs. Gibson-Laemel ' s goal, as she has said, is to pass on some of my energy and knowledge and my appreciation of life to my students to realize their dreams and achieve their goals. She has achieved her goal and in the process has continued to enrich the lives of many people. She lives according to an important Olympic standard, striving to be the best I can be. With the positive influence of Mrs. Gibson-Laemel we, as seniors, have excelled in our endeavors as a class and as individuals. In a way, she has coached us to be prepared for life ' s triumphs and pitfalls, and, thanks to her, we are the best we can be. APPRECIATION We, the Class of 1988, would like to express our deepest ap¬ preciation to our class advisors. Miss Joan Schramm and Mrs. Janice Potter. Miss Schramm has been totally devoted to helping our class perform as a winning team throughout our four years at Suffield High. Under her tu¬ telage, we took the Olympic gold for Spirit Night in our sophomore year. Mrs. Potter as¬ sisted her in junior and senior years as they coached us to vic¬ tory in other spirit contests and in copping the prize for the best S.H.S. candy drive. Mrs. Elizabeth Mavis willingly stepped in for Mrs. Potter during first semester of senior year, and ably helped us through a suc¬ cessful magazine drive and sem- iformal dance. To Mrs. Mavis we express our sincere appreciation and thanks for her very capable assistance. We will be forever grateful for the encouragement and guid¬ ance of our class advisors in helping us to soar to great heights and to achieve our many goals as Suffield High School ' s champion class. 3 Throughout our school years we have trained for this moment. We soon realized, though, that along with our new privilege4camfe newfresponsibilities.tJSJot only did we have to work harder academically, but we had to make a good ampfession on xrnr new tepchets as well as th£ upperclassmen. As we slowly eased into high-school life, we were soon recognized as a class full of talent and future success. The year yvas highlighted by our boys ' varsity basketball team ' s winning the 1985 Class S Division Snate Championship. VLjN Coming into our sophomore year, we were like old pros. We dug right in at the beginning of the year, organizing our class ring committee. Once the rings had been ordered, we concentrated on Spirit Night. As always, the Class of 88 came through, making a clean sweep in our victory at Spirit Night. Our nett job was tackling the organization of our Junior Prom. Although it would not 1 take place for another year, many of us began to make reservations and plan eagerly for that special night. As June approached, we began a search for our first summer jobs, and many of us also earned drivers ' licenses. These were i just two more new responsibilities that we would soon assume. Returning to Suffield High after a fun-filled summer, we were proud to be 1 upperclassmen. Our class won on Spirit Night once again, proving that wt.1 were an energetic, loyal class that loves to have fun! Following our victory. We soon began to work hard at our candy drive to raise money for our class. We made a fine profit which helped to finance the long-awaited Junior Prom. HISTORY After a year of planning, the big event finally arrived, and we danced al night at the beautiful La Renaissance. Most of us headed for the beach tlf next morning and it turned out to be a sunny day on which many of us got our first sunburiv-of the season. We ended the year by taking our S.A.T.sJjn the summer weeks to follow, we planned on continuing our search for thejcollege of our choice and spending precious time with our friends. Along with our senior year, there came a whole new list of tasks to complete. But it would also-be a year full of accomplishments, rewards, and many special times. Throughout the first part of this year, many of us were busy either filling out applications for college or looking into careers. The beginning of our senior year also brought the magazine sale, in which we were very successful at raising money for upcoming events. Once again, we won on Spirit Night hands down. A few weeks later, many of us attended the well- planned senior semi-formal, The Sea of Love. It was very successful ... a super time for friends to dance and laugh together. Some of us were now beginning to receive acceptance letters from colleges, takinfftfir S.A.T s for the last time, and preparing for the many events to come. The Senior Prom and the Senior Banquet were special times which brought us closer together. The next step would be the final one — graduation. Although it meant saying good-bye to friends and the security of Suffield High School, our graduation signified a great success and promised a future full of opportunity and happiness. Suddenly, there is an enthusiastic uproar as many who are watching television listen to an incredible newsbreak announced by broadcaster AMY BORRELL. It has just been discovered that JOHN COGGINS, already one of the wealthiest people in America, has won the $16 million pot in the Lottery. Later that evening, John is accompanied to the T.V. station by his personal accountant, DEBBIE HOFFMAN, and he is looking fashionable as ever in his threads by fashion designer TRACY SANTOS. The pair happily announces that John has decided to spend part of his winnings to fully pay for a reunion of his graduating class. The most wonderful part of all, though, is that the reunion will take place in Switzerland, at the site of the Winter Olympics. There is much to plan for this party, which will be the most exciting extravaganza ever for many. The first step is making reservations. JEN DOWD, president of the United States, contacts TRACY DUNNE and NICOLE MARC, who are co managers of the Dunmarc Ski Resort and restaurant in the heart of Geneva. They agree to take care of all accommodations for the weekend of the reunion. JOHN WATTERS, owner of Watters Construction Company, and his partner ROB CYR, and ROBERT FILOSI, executive manager of Bradley International Airport, have each offered one of their private planes for transportation, and the class of 88 will be flown in superb style by co-pilots SHANNON NAMETH and TRISHA MARKOWSKI, and MARC SCHMIDT. Accountant ED HRYNIEWICZ and businessman CHRIS LUCIA call the Olympic ticket office direct and reserve the best seats for everyone. As all of the plans are quickly falling into place, everyone is becoming more and more anxious. Finally it is February 19, 2,000 and the class of ' 88 is ready to go. After taking off from Bradley, they have some traveling to do before reaching Switzerland. The first stop is Maine, where they will pick up KAREN BROADHURST, a secretary in a medical office, and her husband. They also meet JIMMY RUSCZYK here, who is a successful Maine potato farmer. Then it is off to Canada to pick up KATHY CALDON and her famous singer husband of five years, BRYAN ADAMS. The next stop is sunny California, where the pilots will pick up five classmates. JOHN HINCKLEY and GEORGE HINCKLEY, both Marines, are stationed here, as well as Air Force pilot MARK KELLER ROSE FITZGERALD, a wildlife biologist, is doing research work here, and fashion model MARK MELESKI is just finishing a photo shoot in Los Angeles for G.Q. Magazine. As the planes are about to take off, a slight problem arises. Two invaders attempt a hijack to Cuba. Luckily, smooth talking by psychologists ED GOGULSKI, JEN LONG, LYNN MILLICK, and ASHLEY PUGH calms the hijackers. Then police officers DAN GLORIA and JOE WOODRUFF manage to take their guns, but only in exchange for a short performance by exotic dancer JULIE DiFELICE. Julie happily agrees, always ready to help out her classmates and please her fans. What a relief By this time, some have become slightly airsick, and DAVE ABARE and MATT JOLIE come to the rescue. Unlicensed, practicing pharmacists since graduation, they are well prepared with plenty of Dramamine. Paramedic TIM GEORGE and doctors PETER HORAN, DOUG PETILLO, DONNA PLOURDE, and SUSAN ENDERLE are all on hand to help, along with registered nurses JOAN BUSHEY and DARCY MILLS. A stop in Hawaii has to be made to pick up professional jet skiier JOHN BLAKELY and tennis pro JAY BOMBARD, who is playing in a tournament. Then it ' s off to the big event. As the planes arrive in Geneva, three more classmates are here to greet us — security guards TONY BAUMERT, MIKE LAWRENCE, and ANGELO FAMIGLIETTI who were hired especially for the Olympics. A few moments later, KEVIN SANSONE and PAUL CHAMBERS arrive in Swiss busses, ready to transport everyone to the ski lodge. It is not a boring bus ride, though. Stand- up comedians CHRIS ELY and MIKE CRISSAFULLI keep everyone laughing with their jokes, and JIM LAWRENCE livens up the other bus by strumming away on his guitar. Soon after everyone is settled, the fun begins. By this time, the busses have overheated. Fortunately, mechanics RIKKI JEZISEK, ALEX MECHACHONIS, BRIAN BENSON, and engineers ROB KLESCZEWSKI and DAVE WILLIAMS take charge and the busses are rolling in no time. Some are anxious to see the sights in Geneva. Luckily, many of our classmates know exactly where to take us. First, STEVE BIZIER and JEN MONTELEONE, business entrepreneurs, take us to the center of the city and show us the central government offices. Then everyone begins to cheer wildly as the bus circles around the most magnificent tennis courts in the world. Surrounded by beautiful waterfalls and a brilliant marble walk, the Swiss tennis center was designed by architects MIKE KREPS and DEAN WASSELL, with the help of tennis pro DEB FITCH. Next, the tour bus stops at some shops. Here we can see the expensive creations of our very own fashion designers, KIM COLEMAN and LISA SCHATZ. KIM PALMER, an interpreter, is busy helping everyone explain their requests to the Swiss salespeople, who are being very impatient. After this, international relations expert KIM MURZYN and communications expert PAM RYAN will show everyone some of the great tourist attractions. Meanwhile, others who remained at the ski lodge are busy preparing for the party to take place the following evening. Interior decorators KELLY MILNER and JEN FLEURY take charge of decorating the huge ballroom with the help of artists BRUCE WAHL, ERIC MARC, and SAGE VINICONIS. Mathematicians STACIE KRYNICKI and SUE MEUNIER, and banker KATIE SULLIVAN, are quickly figuring how much food is needed and who will sit at which tables. Luckily, there are two talented florists among us — SALLY ARROWSMITH and JODI MRYKALO — who are arranging beautiful centerpieces and an arc of roses for the entrance. What a breathtaking sight once the room is completed! And, photographer TED PALKOVIC is on hand to capture the moment. Later that evening, while everyone is relaxing at the lodge, they are pleasantly surprised by the arrival of lawyer INGE BOON and her husband, from Belgium, who have come to help celebrate. The following day, everyone is up early and extremely excited about going to the Olympics. After watching gymnasts MIKE WINIARSKI and DARRYL COLSON compete, we move on to cheer our skiiers, who include CRAIG CLEARY, JASON HODGE, and TROY GIFFORD of the U S. men ' s team. The U.S. women ' s team is represented by two Suffield expert skiiers — TRACY KEATING and BRENDA MANZANO. The fans go wild when Brenda and Troy both win gold medals. The time has finally arrived. The U-S- ice hockey team is about to face the Russians. The U.S. has more supporters than ever, seemingly half from Suffield. ROB DiGENNARO, owner of the Islanders, is enthusiastic in leading the Suffield rooting section. Businessman LANCE HARRIMAN, Hartford Whalers owner MARYELLEN RYAN, pediatrician SCOTT MONTY, and hockey pro DAN SAYADOFF, all fans, are also boisterously cheering. BECKY LEAVITT watches anxiously as her husband, former goalie KEITH FORMANEK, scores the first goal of the game at his new forward position. Everyone is thrilled that we are ahead, until a Russian player whacks two of our players — DAVID PROPHECY HUMISTON and PAT MILLIGAN — in the head. Due to concussions, they are removed from the game. Amazingly enough, the Russians are not penalized and the game ended with the American team losing by a score of 3-2. Although it was an unfair loss, everyone remains in good spirits and returns to the ski lodge to prepare for the party. Beautician CHRISTA GREGORY puts her talents to work on the women to make them all beautiful. The night is a total success. The fun begins with a dinner. But first, we proved once again that we were a class never at a loss for words jaguar dealership owner RYAN BUCKELEW toasts fast cars and beautiful women. STEVE GALLO, a successful engineer, toasts Ryan for his brilliant speech, and then honors the class with his smurf smile and a Gallo grunt that only Steve could make. After dinner everyone dances to the music of a great band. The group consists of trombonist RICH CICERO, French horn player KIRSTII COMPTON, drummer STEVE BOHNER, and guitarists CHRIS SCHWAB and JASON VIETS. They are led by professional singers JEN LEE and CYNDI KAPLAN, and dancers MELANIE MOODIE and RENE NELSON. Meanwhile, the dance floor seems to be taken over by political scientist LISA HOCK and teacher MICHELLE BERKLEY, who after twelve years still know how to move. Voted class couple in 1988, soccer pro JASON WOODWORTH and his wife, therapist KAREN SMITH, look dashing as ever in each other ' s arms. Bartenders JOE MORRISON and CHRIS PIEJKO, who recently became the owner of the Adolph Coors Brewery, are busy serving drinks, as waitress MAURA LaROSE serves hors-d ' oeuvres with the assistance of JACQUELYN HINCKLEY and radiologists JODY DRAKE and SANDY JOLIE. There is never a dull moment, thanks to class partier JOANN MAIOLO who keeps everyone in a party mood She may have done too good a job, because wrestler STEVEN HOLCOMB, Olympic hurdler JIM PURRINGTON, and race track owner STEVE TURNER have a job on their hands, attempting to pull soccer players COREY SULLIVAN and JAYSON DEMARCO down from the chandeliers. At this point, social worker DINA St. GEORGE suggests that the party settle down for awhile, and teacher JACKIE MARCHITTO agrees. The band takes a break for awhile, and everyone relaxes. Attorneys STACY GALIATSOS and DANA DADDARIO proudly tell about their new practice, opening in Washington, D.C., and they hire paralegal SARAH CONDON on the spot. MICHELLE MEDEIROS, a fulltime mom, passes around pictures of her six children. When asked how she handled them, Michele says that she just ships them off to a daycare center run by CAROL MAYER during the day, and at night she chases the little darlings around the house until they drop into their beds. Teachers KIM BRONSORD, JEN GROUTEN, and HEATHER HUOT admire their classmates who have children just entering school. Their children are the best little group of kids they have seen since working in the Suffield Schools. During this time, photographers NICOLE ORR and ROB HINCKLEY snap pictures of everyone looking wonderful with smiling faces and beautiful outfits. Then at the microphone, THOMAS DOANE and PAT PURDY, co-owners of a garage, ask everyone to be quiet for the raffle of a Mustang, provided by dealership owner JIM NARGI. A horse is the second raffle prize. The Clydesdale had walked into a stable co-owned by SHARON CYBORON, BECKY YOST, DENISE LeCUYER, and TRACY MILLS back in Connecticut, and they didn ' t know what else to do with it. Lawyer NEIL ANDREWS wins the Clydesdale, and the proud winner of the Mustang is GREG JASIENSKI, owner of a bike shop. By now everyone is restless, so D.J. KRISTA ENGLER plays some records. Everyone dances the rest of the night away. It is a beautiful reunion, with the room looking exquisite, everyone dressed to the hilt, and memories that will last a lifetime. The following day, a Sunday, is our last day in Switzerland. Retail manager MICHELE CARNEY and bicyclist TAMMY DiTOMMASO assist Nicole in preparing a special breakfast. Afterwards, everyone heads for the slopes, a few incidents mar an otherwise perfect day for skiing. Track star ADAM FREYLER attempts to jump moguls the way he jumps hurdles, but Finds them quite different. Softball coach TRACY HARTSHORN tries to catch a snowball thrown at her ski lift car, but due to a slight miscalculation she ends up head first in the snow-covered mountain below her. Luckily, sports trainer LORI O ' CONNOR and physical therapist SUZI STOLZENBERG are right there to help out. Later that evening, as everyone is winding down and preparing to leave, secretaries CHRISTINE LIANA and TAMMY TESTA, accountant GINA PERETTI, and psychologist JEN SHERMAN come running into the ski lodge. The four had spent another day at the Olympics with their husbands. Having overheard two men speaking, they discovered that the U.S. Russian hockey game had been fixed. At this news, criminal justice expert JEN McKENNEDY takes charge and decides to find out the truth once and for all. Led by Jen, a group heads straight for the Main Olympic Office. Computer programmer JOHN HAGGET and electronics expert PETER VARHOLAK turn off the computerized security system while JON RUBBA, Dallas Cowboys Quarterback, stock broker JEFF STROLE, and forest ranger MARK SILKEY deck the only three security guards on duty nearby. Business administrator TAMMY ROOD begins pulling documents from a file as attorneys JOE LESSARD and CRAIG MUSZYNSKI read over them. One document states that each Olympic event will be judged by a group, with each group consisting of one judge from every country participating in the event. Seconds later, advertiser CHERYL LEMANSKI comes across an interesting written agreement. New York Times columnist CARLA MARIANO attempts to decipher the scribbled letter. Once the message is revealed, everyone is in shock. The letter is an agreement between the Russian judge and the referees stating that if they did everything possible to help the Russians win, they would each be paid $50,000. Excited at their discovery, the group turns to leave and is confronted by two security guards. Luckily, mace salesman NOEL OSOWIECKI takes care of them. After reporting their discovery to officials, the group heads back to the ski lodge to announce its news to the relieved and happy classmates. Journalist KRISTIN INGELS continues to write in her diary of the weekend ' s events, while we all wait to hear the officials ' judgement. Eventually everyone has to head for the airport. As the tearful goodbyes begin, a smiling Olympic official runs up with three gold medals. After placing them around the necks of our three hockey players, he announces that the American hockey team is the official gold medal winner of the year 2,000 winter Olympics. What a way to top off a fabulous weekend! JOHN COGGINS makes one last comment as everyone flies off into the sunset and back to Suffield. Stop pouting, he says.
