He has been a strong inspiration to the athletes of Suffield High School. In the 1985 basketball season, Mr. Aniello led the WILDCATS to a state championship vic¬ tory. The following year, Mr. Aniello ' s dedicated coaching brought the team to the sem i-finals. The Senior Class appreciates Mr. Aniello ' s superior coaching qualities, but moreover, values his friendship. SPORTS BANQUET 1986 CLASS OF 1987 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Kim Straite Jaime Hullinger Annette Flynn 135 HHBMHBHHHii CLASS ‘ M Leaving the comfort and security of McAlister Middle School, we found ourselves thrust into the ominous environment of Suffield High. As newcomers, we anxiously set out to earn the respect of the up¬ perclassmen and earnestly tried to become an integral part of the I school system. It was as freshmen that we experienced our first high- % r school dance, ordered our blue and white Suffield Wildcat jackets, chose our high school sports, and became familiar with what was and what was not acceptable. It was a year of many beginnings, in which we set new goals and learned corresponding responsibilities. The following September we returned to the high school as re¬ juvenated, eager sophomores. We promptly ordered our rings and set our eyes on the date of their arrival. Amazing ourselves and the entire school with our creative Twelve Days of Christmas display, we won the Deck the Halls competition hands down Our year was highlighted by the victory office varsity boys ' basketball team, which captured the Class S DivisicwState Championship. A sense of pride pervaded the school. This culmination of events made our second year in high school a success, and we left for summer vacation with new-found confidence in knowing that we were now upperclassmen. We carried this air of distinction as juniors back to the high school in September. Many of us returned, bearing the coveted driver ' s license and were experiencing the freedom that comes with decision-making. Some of us struggled to fine-tune the balance between jobs and school. Somehow we managed, and found the time to raise money for our class through the perennial candy sale. Then, with the emergence of spring, came our long-awaited prom. 136 HISTORY We danced the night away to the strains of For Just a Moment ' but found the beach a bit cold the next day. As our approaching senior year became more of a reality to us, we began planning for future goals. We spent one fine Saturday morning in May pushing no. 2 pen¬ cils in the name of scholastic aptitude. Finally June sixteenth arrived and the summer was upon us. We entered our senior year with mixed emotions of anticipation and anxiety. The order of the day was meticulously filling out our college applications. This, however, didn ' t inhibit us from participating in other exciting school functions. 1986 was the year of our magazine drive, a fundraiser that we needed badly, since we were on the verge of bankruptcy. But our lack of funds didn ' t prevent us from being openly selfless and charitable. The seniors, aware of the plight of the hungry, organized a canned goods drive that ranked right up there with Live Aid, Unicef, and the Concert for Bangladesh. We were mar¬ tyrs in our own time — but still martyrs that knew how to dress up and party, at the senior prom and semi-formal. We topped the year off by returning to Chez Josef for our Senior Banquet, where we received our yearbooks (which the Sagitta staff had worked so hard and long to pro¬ duce). Aware now that our days here were numbered, we reminisced with old friends about our kindergarten days when life held no pressures or responsibilities. We now knew, more acutely than ever, that those days were over for us, and that the time had come for us to move on. We left the comfort and security of Suffield High in anticipa¬ tion of a bright and fulfilling future. Charman, Melissa Hastings National Honor Society — Amy Davis, Michael Fitzgerald, Renee Meunier, Ann Newman, Kirsten Quitno, Charles Schulte 174 CLASS On May 15, 1997, the Suffield High School prin¬ cipal received the first anonymous, threatening phone call from a supposed right-wing group of Latin scholars who apparently were displeased with a certain Eileen Kinney ' s unprecedented and radical teaching methods. Dr. Johnson, in a valiant effort, alerted Secretary of Defense Beth Sullivan in hopes of finding someone to protect Mrs. Kinney from these violent Latin graduates. Quick thinking pro¬ mpted Beth to alert radio broadcaster Terry Steams, who immediately dropped all important matters at hand and called a class meeting, in which he outlin¬ ed the developing situation to fellow alumni. After several hours of heated discussion, a decision was made: Mrs. Kinney must be spared! Plans were then formulated and the operation was put into effect under the close supervision of CIA agent Chuck Looby. The plans went into effect June 16, 1997, ten years after graduation, and Colleen Bland, world- renowned French interpreter, disguised as a student in Mrs. Kinney ' s classroom, waited anxiously for the operation to begin. In the distance she heard the ominous drone of the helicopters. She knew it was now or never. Getting up from her seat, she drew out her machine gun, sprayed the window for dramatic effect and forced screaming Mrs. Kinney out onto the roof. The chopper, donated by Amy Hixon, self-made millionaire and owner of a large corporate tourism business, landed, and out jumped E ilot Greg Goodrich with Whitney Graham, eautiful as ever, in tow. They grabbed Mrs. Kinney and thrust her into the aircraft. Awaiting her were Looby, who informed her as to why she was being taken hostage, and lawyers Ann Newman and Christine Klaus, who discussed her legal rights. Also on hand were Richard Flagg and Gregg Har- bold, aircraft maintenance specialists, to take care of any possible complications. Their destination was Jamaica, where Patricia Fortier still basked in the sun after graduating a decade earlier. More precise¬ ly, they were off to Janet Horan ' s exclusive hotel, managed and operated jointly by Horan and Amy Little. Adjacent to the hotel was Andy Bennett ' s and Robert Ryan ' s world-famous Chinese restaurant. Both promised that Mrs. Kinney would at no time lack good, wholesome food while in exile. The chopper approached the secluded Jamaican airstrip, and with the aid of air traffic controllers Tim Greenwood and Jim Muska, managed to land safely. Awaiting the chopper was a limo provided by Matt MacNayr ' s Limousine Service. On board was Playboy bunny Melissa Hastings, who, upon seeing Mrs. Kinney, realized that she had in¬ advertently entered the wrong limo. This, however, did not faze driver Todd Berozsky. Missy, crimson with embarrassment, jumped into the front seat while Berozsky put the limo in gear and drove Looby and Mrs. Kinney to the hotel. Arriving at the hotel, Mrs. Kinney was escorted to room B-201, where Suzanne Estee and Grace DeAngelis were putting the finishing touches on the interior. Others were soon to arrive. First to come were hairdressers Beth Hulevitch, Carolyn Dixon, and Jill Pitkat, along with cosmetologists Laura Thomas and Kelly Johnson, who together, attempted to give Mrs. Kin¬ ney a new identity. In an effort to disguise the teacher ' s voice, a well- known Speech pathologist, Stacy Sciacchitano, was called in. Later in the evening, fashion designers Lisa Mandeville, Phyllis Tupek, and Maureen Clark designed an unpretentious and comfortable war¬ drobe for Mrs. Kinney that would serve her well during the following days. The fashions would later be sold exclusively to Tracey Johnson ' s clothing boutique, situated on the east side of the island. An always-caring Linda Carbonell, concerned about Mrs. Kinney ' s well-being, asked Bob Dyer to deliver a delightful bouquet of daisies from her own specialty flower shop. The inevitable question was soon raised as to whether their present accom¬ modations were secluded enough to conceal Mrs. Kinney from the outside world-namely those per¬ sons affiliated with right-wing organizations established primarily to harass innocent followers of the Latin way. Agent Looby decided that it was time to move out. He ordered Joe Miarecki to find someone who could build an innovative and safe structure to secure the Latin teacher. The Class of ' 87, having an abundance of architects and engineers, had no problem in finding someone to do the job. Gregg Norcross, Andrew Terry, Greg Waterman, Aaron Freyler, Brian Cigal, Mike Fit¬ zgerald, Gary Colson, Mike Chapman, Deb Berry, and Paul Russell collaborated to create a highly- sophisticated sound-proof stucco domicile on waterfront property donated by real estate salesper¬ sons Jaydeen Martino and Vic Rizzo. Michael Whitney ' s Security Systems Unlimited contributed advanced security system. Because of the drabness of the inside, interior decorators Rob Long and Jackie Morrison were called to the scene, as were ar¬ tists Cathy Hamman, Mike Russell, Howie Porter, an Suzy Gale, along with sculptor Jeff Taylor. Elec¬ tronic Technicians Glenn Lemke and Tim Ramsey were called upon to install the lighting, while plumber Scott Nigro and his apprentices, Kevin Smith and Brian Patterson, handled the water system. With an operation of this magnitude, high costs were anticipated. The class of ' 87, with its well- known knack for getting into serious financial dif¬ ficulty, turned the finances over to the competent hands of accountants Charissa Fabi, Brian Boyd, Debra Mancini, Kristin Hynes and Susan Sych, who worked diligently under the tutelage of business ad¬ ministrators Susan Roche, Kathy Holbrook, Cam Permatteo and Jennifer Stafford. As feared, the operation had exceeded its budget. Word was sent out to classmates asking for contributions in order to decrease the size of the debt. Danny Minninger and George Krar, both successful business owners, sent very substantial donations from their Swiss bank accounts. Guitarists Scott Hefflon and John Bikowski, along with keyboardist A.J. Charman, PROPHECY staged a benefit concert to give some “Live Aid to Latin. The proceeds of the concert were invested in various stocks and bonds by Erin Magnuson, Mike Pender, and Ricky Miner, large corporate invest¬ ment bankers in New York City. Pro basketball player Annette Flynn, wife of Larry Bird, and Baroness Karen Parsons, followed the example of Krar and Minninger by giving very substantial monetary gifts. Work was also in progress by Sara Morrison and Jennifer Poulin who were busy writing Mrs. Kinney ' s life story. The nonprofit book was to be published by Brendan Mulligan ' s Copyright Company and marketed by Kim Straite, an expert in her field. The movie rights were later snapped up by Lou Hawkins, a renowned film pro¬ ducer, for a hefty twenty-five million. Advertising of the book was entrusted to Kelli Munday, an up- and-coming businesswoman of the 90 ' s. These ef¬ forts exceeded all expectations and met all financial obligations; a slush fund was even created. Mrs. Kinney, incognito, was now prepared to be moved to her new abode. With Looby by her side, the teacher was transported via taxi with driver Bruce Roy at the wheel, to the outskirts of the city, to the notable St. Pauli Girl Brewery, co-owned by Eric Stolzenberg and Jeff Ruoss. From there, they slipped away on a somewhat cramped ' 75 Yamaha driven by Rodney Sherman, and headed in the night towards the airstrip. A jet, piloted by Pat Dunn and Brian Bellmore, was there to fly them to the newly-constructed compound. Mrs. Kinney was greeted by designated host. Chipper Schulte. Under the watchful eye of medical assistant Sharon Hin¬ ckley, registered nurse Kristin Komer, and doctor Nils Skrattegard, Mrs. Kinney was pumped into shape. Gym teacher Tom Mitchell and athletic trainers Susie Naughton and Mark Mandirola began with a cardiovascular workout, which con¬ sisted of running up and down five flights of stairs ninety-three times in high-heeled shoes. Next, Sara Reidy and Randy Raine took over with karate in¬ structions. Psychologists Jacqui MacDonald and Suzanne Alers made Mrs. Kinney evaluate seventy-two ink blots designed by Brian Stmiste, and later described her early childhood for a period of three hours. She then visited Kristen Quitno, who instructed her on the power of positive think¬ ing. The evening ' s events were topped off by ex- Marines Wade Reid, Mike Stulpin, and Frank Schultz who hurled insults at the top of their lungs. Mrs. Kinney was now impenetrable, solid as a rock in every way. Despite what most would think, her situation was at times boring. In order to while away the time, Mrs. Kinney proposed a seminar in which she would teach others the wonderful art of teaching Latin. Those attending the seminar were teachers Amy Davis, Kim Morrison, Natalie Hoar, Janet Len¬ non, and Lisa Watkins. Secretaries Jodi Sweatland and Beth Wood took notes and sent them by means of the butler, Scott Sabellico, to be copied for the future reference of those who had attended the meeting. The copying machine had broken down, and expert copying-machine technicians Kelly Perkins and Mike Sullivan were called to the scene to fix it. Outside the compound, best friends Barbie Bennett and Elaine Hale, human rights advocates, hearing of Mrs. Kinney ' s plight, were spurred into action. The two women chained themselves to the pinnacle of a fifteen-story building and demanded that those threatening Mrs. Kinney confess and give themselves up. Firefighters Jeff Webster and Paul Murphy were assigned the task of cutting the chains and bringing them down. Jeff Borgio, an emergency medical technician, made sure that they were unhurt. Social workers Kim Hawkins and Stacie Golden were then asked to determine whether these women were still of sound mental judgement and able to function within society. After this rather extreme incident, it was decided that new measures ought to be taken in order to find the organization that was threatening Mrs. Kinney. . Private detective Chris Hargy, in cooperation with police chief Greg Lyon and his crew, Allyn LeBlanc, Todd Arciszewski, and Steven Sznajder, was called upon to further investigate the matter. Consequent¬ ly, a renewed effort to keep Mrs. Kinney one step ahead, went into effect. Calls were made to longtime Japanese correspondents Masako Ogawa and Chihiro Onda, in order to arrange new accom¬ modations. Surgeon Generals Jaime Hullinger and Renee Meunier were delegated to perform reconstructive surgery on Mrs. Kinney in order to make her resemble a Japanese citizen. The ten-hour operation went off without a hitch, with nurses Lib¬ by Egan, Shari Bligh, and anesthesiologist Patty Patterson, assisting. After a rewarding operation, Mrs. Kinney was transported on a large cargo ship, owned and operated by Rich and Joe Bazanno. The voyage to Japan abruptly came to a halt when the ship struck a stray iceberg off the southern coast of Oahu. Luckily, Rich was able to radio for help just before the ship became completely submerged. The Coast Guard arrived in the nick of time. Recruits David Galetta and Richard McQuillian retrieved the water-logged victims and brought them on board to warm them up. At this point, Looby was up in arms as to what to do. ... Then, out of the blue. Matt and Mark Osowiecki, members of the U.S. Anti-Terrorism Unit, learned through underground liaison with government of¬ ficials Alan Gawlik and Jeff Ford, that the entire ter¬ rorist threat was a cruel hoax to undermine Mrs. Kinney ' s teaching methods. It turned out that, in a moment of severe boredom. Matt Fitch had placed the call which triggered the train of events. Police officers Paul Deske and Jeff Roy, were on the scene to arrest the deranged individual. A banquet was later held in Mrs. Kinney ' s honor with the entire graduating class of ' 87 in attendance. Everyone was glad that the situation was finally over and that Mrs. Kinney was once again in safe hands. Then the phone rang... 175 A sun waits on the edge of the sea and sky ...
