Girls' Varisty Soccer 5-8 Although the record 5-8-0 does not show it, the girls' varsity soccer team had a fairly successful season. We had many strong and experienced players, and our coach Mr. Downes, was no longer new to the style of girls' soccer. Coach Downes organized a strong team of jet-like strikers, dashing halfbacks, 3 fait and fierce fullback, and goalie, Helen fpull 'em upj mit . We started the season by beating Ethel Walker for the first time, by a score of 5-3. We then lost to Hotchkiss 1-4. In defeating Berkshire, everyone had a fantastic game. After that victory, however our record started declining and we won only a few more games. In the best game we played we lost to Willi- ston, 3-1. Next fall, many of the team's players will be gone. We wish the team the best of luck in next year's season, We'Il be back to play you in the alumni game! Thanks to Cindy and Sue. We really appreciate your contrib- ution to the team. As a team unit we strived to play our very best and when we did we were awesome. A reflection of this had to be the game against Pomfret, who had not lost a game in thirty-six out- ings, as we fought and won our tough- est game, 1-0. Outstanding performances were seen in every player at one time or another, but much credit must be given to such players as Jim Van Law, who did an outstanding job in his first year in goal. On defense there was no one to match the ability of Jim Goodwin or the hustle of Kevin Stone. Likewise on offense no one could match the speed and scoring prowess of Hugh Rice. But overall the credit for our hard-earned wins and tough-fought losses must be given to the team as a whole. Ours was a tight group of players who strongly loved and wanted to play soccer, and who put their noses to the grindstone when needed. The come- back victory against Berkshire and the near-miss against Deerfield, show that determination and spirit. Our record was not fantastic but the moral and spiritual victories won made the sea- son a truly enjoyable and unforgettable one. The co-captains want to give much recognition and thanks to Coaches Gooch and Graden who offered their friendship, knowledge, and love of the game to each of us.
