KENNETH BARTHOLOMEW Admer ................,.....,... Miss Doais NAF1s The Suffern Chapter of the National Honor Society was started in june, I9-46. and seven- teen members were inducted. The aims ofthe Honor Society are to stimulate the scholar- ship, leadership, service and character of the students in the school. Students are chosen for membership who are outstanding in these four qualifications. Covered-dish suppers, movies, dinner meet- ings and discussions were all part of the pro- gram. A scholarship fund and trips to colleges were also planned by the members of the society this year. F' 'i V MOUNTAIN ECHO Edizorr-in-Cbicf ............... LAwRENc.E Gattacsmaa At the beginning of the year, the staff pledged itself to maintain the high standards attained last year by winning Class A rating of our paper at the E.S.S.P.A. Convention. To increase their knowledge of journalism mem- bers of the staff went to press conventions at Syracuse and N.Y.Ij. In addition to this they sponsored the second annual Suffern Student Press Conference. Many new ideas were tried out in the paper this year. The most important of these was the new size which brings it to nearly the size of a real paper. More student news was in- cluded in each issue and picture ads were tried with great success. ATHLETIC SERVICE Adtirer .,..............,.................. MR. Al: SMITH In this group are the students who are seen at all the home athletic contests. selling and collecting tickets, handling money. and gen- erally managing the gate receipt phase of the athletic program. In so doing. they lend valuable .iid to the Student Council. and thus to the school. They also gain proficiency in handling finances. and are given their GO. tickets. if an underclass- men. or an Athletic Seryice pin in recognition of their services, XY'ith this years ambitious home athletic schedule of six football games and ten bas- ketball games. the club members were kent busy, but performed very commendably. drawing high praise from Mr. Smith and the Student Council.

MIXED Ullllli TWIRLER The Music Department of Suffern High School started off the past year with a band, under the very able direction of Mr. Joseph N. Roman. The Mixed Chorus, consisting of eighty voices, did the school proud at the Fall Concert, when the group sang George Gershwins Summertime, Jerome Kern's Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, and a rendition of Fred Waring's Battle Hymn of the Republic, which was repeated at the Spring Concert on request of our very appre- ciative audience. We also had a mixed ensemble of 18 selected voices who sang a number of selections between the acts of the Senior Play. The ensemble gave a musical Christ- mas program at the Rotary Club. The twirlers have become an essential part of Suffern High School. as they are an added attraction not only to football games but to basketball games and com- munity parades as well. Three of the twirlers this year had the opportunity to twirl in New York City at the St. Nicholas Arena. Their performance was gracefully executed and well received. The twirlers have been working hard on new and especially good routines. Their stunt acts have proved very successful and entertaining. 5 E 5 6 , ff' i '.

GERRIT ZwART All members of this club receive instruc- tions in every type of visual aids and provide projection facilities for many classroom pro- grams. Movies are shown in assemblies and also in the cafeteria during lunch periods, providing ainment and relaxation for the students. N X GIRLS' SHOP 49th-10th GRADESD DANCING CLUB Admer ............ MISS DOLORES LAVENBURG The Senior High Dancing Class has had, in the past, lessons and practice periods. This last year there were so many who had taken dancing lessons before that we tried using the period for a dancing practice period. This proved most successful. Most of our eighty members danced and there were few watchers. It is the hope of this club to become cquainted with some of the more common and tools and materials used in industry. ur efforts are centered around projects hich will appeal to a girl, in leather, art etals and wood. This club may also lead to very enjoyable hobby for some of the girls.
