M f ggi-4 Sruyvzsapiv H kan ' xowor., E The individual can only be a product of his ex- perience, and for the past few years Stuyvesant has been our experience. lt is easy to show the face of that experience, but is more difficult to show its char- acter. To analyze the character of the Stuyvesant background, we must examine the Stuyvesant in- dividual. Stuyvesant has the power to select its student body. The student calibre is therefore high, high in motivation and high in applied ability. Of course, individuals are different. That is what makes them individuals. But while Stuyvesantian interest ranges from Beethoven to baseball, there are certain com- mon aims, such as college and career. lt is here-in the scholastic competitions-that every individual asset is nurtured and developed. Individual character may be likened to a mosaic. ln a private school, with perhaps more resources than Stuyvesant, each part of the mosaic is polished and set. But in a public school, students must develop in- dividually and independently, or they iust do not develop at all. Students have freedom thrust upon them, it is their duty to utilize their freedom. At Stuyvesant they do. Guidance is also essential to the development of the individual. Somewhere there is that fine balance between supervision and leeway, that optimum set of conditions for the culture of individuals. The bal- ance cannot always be reached. Perfection is im- possible to achieve, but it is only in moving toward that goal that we make any progress. The uniqueness and the beauty of an individual as opposed to autom- atons is that the individual thinks and functions of free will. If Stuyvesant accomplishes the creation of free-thinking individuals, in so doing it has served its purpose well. Of course, each graduate's memory of his sec- ondary school education may not necessarily be of the individualism he is allowed to develop here, nevertheless, it is this special quality, more than any other, which makes the student a Stuyvesantian . This impression is graven on each heart and will live for a long time. 5 PRENCEPALJS MESSAGE Dr. Leonard I. Fliedner, Principal To the Graduates of June T964 Dear Friends: This class enioys the distinction of graduating on the sixtieth anniversary of the founding of our beloved school. It was in 1904 that Stuyvesant was organized under the leadership of Dr. Frank Rollins. In one of his earliest messages, Dr. Rollins told the students, The special function of this school will not be to make college students or mechanics, but to make men. This has continued to be a guiding light for the teachers and principals who have followed him. We are still primarily interested in instilling in our students high ideals of personal and social behavior that will prepare them to become men who are worthy to be leaders in a democracy. In addition we expect that the excellent education our students receive at Stuyvesant will prepare them to make important contributions to our culture. The world moves be- cause some men in every generation add significantly to knowledge. We already have a Nobel Prize winner, more Ph. D's than any other high school and graduates who are famous in the arts, government, science and education. lt is my sincere hope that the class of June 1964 will individually and collectively uphold the high standards of personal, social and professional activities that we have come to expect from our graduates. My best wishes for success. Cordially yours, Leonard J. The diploma in today's world does not possess the significance of 50 years ago. The Indicator, though, has not depreciated. This Year- book sums up all our achievements and memories in a slender volume, for now and for the future. This year the Indicator is different. The staff has attempted to put together a book of higher calibre, greater intellectual insight, and wider coverage. Yet in many ways this Indicator is the same as in the past. We have the records of our victories and our prizes, the pages of familiar faces, the some teams and clubs as always. The difference is that this is our year. The Indicator has tried to reach a little above the pictures and the names to a higher plane. What is important to you is that this is the 60th year of Stuyvesant H. S., its 104th graduating class-the class of 1964. We hope this Yearbook will keep this class alive for you long after 1964. Mrs. Diane Antell Faculty Advisor Editors Shinrller, Slattery, and Tuckerman confer with Spirer on layout of yearbook. INDICATOR. Bottom, I-r: Kanter, Mazur, F. Workman, M. SPECTATOR This year's Spectator has proudly continued the forty-nine year tradition of presenting to the student body interesting news of the school. However, this year's Spectators have tried to broaden the scope o-f the newspaper beyond school affairs. The innovations are evident in the larger number of reviews, interesting articles by Spec reporters on affairs outside of school, columns such as Cogitamus Ergo Sumus, and the exciting editorials. Another innovation, or more properly a return to former days, was the reintroduction of the five-column paper in the spring term after a brief, but not unsuccessful, experiment with six columns. This year's Spectator, un- der Mr. lnce's fine leadership, is more intellectual without losing touch with the student body. This example might well be the goal of many other papers. CALIPER The Caliper is Stuyvesant's answer to those who say that our school is strictly a science high school. lt annually ranks with the best high school magazines in the nation, and, according to Mr. Wozniak, faculty adviser, it can be favorably compared with many college publications. This year it was given the top Medalist rating by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Three members of the staff won three out of five prizes awarded by the Prose Writers Association at New York University. These stories were published by the University in Good Themes . The Caliper, during the spring term, will try to widen its scope by including many more essays and reviews, with less emphasis on fiction, and will therefore become more interesting without sacrificing its artistic standards. lp! 1964's Caliper editors Nussbaum, Ancona, Hale, and Edelstein discuss plans with Mr. Wozniak, CALIPER. NUCLEUS Stuyvesant is primarily a science high school, therefore the Nucleus, our science publication, is one of our most important magazines. Now in its fourth year, it has done a splendid job of covering the wide spectrum of physical and biological science courses offered at Stuyvesant, This year the.Nucleus con- tained a wide variety of articles on subjects ranging from lasers to aging processes. The Nucleus is the work of Stuyvesant's finest science students and its faculty advisor, Dr. Etron. Notable contributors are Steven Riess, Jerry Nadler, and Michael Form. NUCLEUS. MINOR PUBLICATIONS Stuyvesant is privileged to have many line, small publications. We truly have our share of minor magazines, and all of them are well worth reading. The Language Department contributes the following: L'Etoile fFrenchJ, Zarkor CHebrewJ, Rostra fLatinD, La Voz Estaivestantiava CSPGTI' ishl, and Die Deutsche Zeitschitt fGermanD. We have three form newspapers: The Soph Slate, The Junior Jots, and the Senior Chronicle. The Math Department authors the Math Survey. The Physical Education Department keeps us informed of our teams through the Box Seat. The Folk-Singing Club publishes the Folksay. The wide variety of these indicates a lively, enduring interest in many fields, and these publications present to the student unusual opportunities for self-expression. STU ENT G VEPNIVIENT EXECUTIVE COUNCIL This year the Executive Council, the legislative branch of our student govern- ment, headed by Seymour Israel in the Fall, and Andrew Kertesz, in the Spring, attempted many new re- forms and led much activity. The list of the Fall administration's accomplishments includes the creation ot the Student Council, the Publicity Committee, and the College and Class Rank Committee led by Simon Barsky. One ot lsrael's early goals was realized in the tirst few weeks ot the Kertesz program with the enactment of the Varsity Club by the Board of Governors. Because Stuyvesant is such a small Governmental community, G.O. legislation directly affects the stu- dents. Therefore, in theory, the individual should be constantly striving to be heard. Only this can make the General Organization even more progressive and educational. Bottom, l-r: Sidney Leinwand, Jonathan Tress, Robert Siegel. 2nd Row: Elias Schwann, Harry Maples, Richard Ubaldi, Myron Danow. The senior official class presidents discuss how to best implement popular activities. Senior president Jacob Schwartz co-ordinates the diversified senior affairs, while vice-president Jonathan Tress and secre- tary Sid Leinwand guide such activities as the intramurals program and the prom. The Council has the job of translating 700 distinct voices and desires into effective and popular decisions. Early in the year, committees were formed to carry out the Council's plat- form. The Prom Committee had got plans underway for a May dance. The Senior Chronicle kept the students informed and entertained. The officers have had the support of an enthusiastic senior class. In ci year beset with problems of college admissions these students have performed an excellent service in carrying out the social functions of the class of '64. Senior officers Tress, Schwartz, and Leinwand wait for Senior Council meeting to convene. 80 K Senior class presidents listen as Pres. Schwartz addresses them. ARISTA Stuyvesant's chapter of the National Honor Society, Arista, performs a unique service. Its purpose is threefold. It provides a forum for the expression of intelligent views, and also renders important serv- ices to the community. In addition, Arista rewards worthy students with a scholarship program. This work is supervised by its leaders, Eugene Rosov, lra Fishman, and Jacob Schwartz. Mrs. Baron's guidance gives direction to the various activities. Community services form the bulk of Arista's activities. Its volun- teers form an integral part of ward and laboratory staffs in neighboring hospitals. Tutors aid the underprivileged in settlement houses such as the Floyd Patterson House and the Educational Alliance. The visiting committee sends representatives to iunior high schools to inform the students of Stuyvesant's attributes. The rewards for membership in Arista are many. Among them are outings and other social activities. This year marked the initiation of interschool contests of academic prowess, and Arista provided worthy representatives. About fifteen seniors were awarded the National Honor Society Certificate of Merit. Through all these activities, Arista sets the standard for academic and extra-curricular excellence. 81 ELLI S THE ART CLUBS As Seniors now, our thoughts un- doubtedly dwell upon the many clubs and societies which we frequented during our stay at Stuyvesant. Music lovers among us will point to the impressive array of musically oriented clubs at Stuyvesant-which encompassed the backfence yowling of the Beatles, and the thundering of Caruso, from the strumming of a guitar, to the powerful strains of a symphony orchestra. Linguists can look back on interesting experiences in the Latin, French, Spanish, and Hebrew Clubs, where they explored the cultural and conversational aspects of these languages. Future historians recollect fascinating lectures delivered by prominent local and national figures at the History Society. Devoted philatelists recall sticky days at the Stamp Club. Contempo- rary Platos will never forget the riotous Tuesday afternoons at the Philosophy Society, and Casey Jones fans remember puz- zling over track layouts at the Model Railroad Society. The diversity of the Art Clubs has given us, as individuals, the opportunity to pursue our unique interests. Unlike the classrooms, where we duti- fully absorbed facts and formulae, the clubs provided an ac- tive outlet for our abilities, and a cultivating ground for our true interests. Science bugs in our midst recall hours spent before, during, and after school, listening to lectures, performing ex- periments, watching films, and struggling with equations, elec- trons, numbers, negatives, forces, mutations . . . Our future physicists can well account for the time they spent as members of the Cyclotron Club. Mathematical whizzes remember excit- ing Thursday afternoons at the Math Society. Experienced hams recall lunch periods spent hunched over the telegraph key in our crowded shack, under the auspices of the Radio Club. Prospective M.D.s look back on the Bio-med Society. Shutterbugs think nostalgically Mr. Bowden explains formula to member of Chemistry Society. of the dark room days at the Stuyvesant Photography Club. Every day under the leadership of Mr. Chusid the orchestra rehearses in preparation for assembly programs and the Spring Concert. Its repertoire ranges from Bach's Wir Glauben All An Einen Gott to Bartok's Rumanian Folk Dances . BAND While most activities at Stuyvesant are seasonal, the band is always hard at work, practicing for a forthcoming concert. Under the baton of Mr. Bart the band has entertained audiences for twenty-five years, playing everything from sweet, slow, and melodic music to colorful marches and Latin rhythms. This year's seventy instrumentalists are no exception. In addition to their fine performances at the Spring Concert and Parents' Association program they participated in a Memorial tribute to President Kennedy. DRAMA To complete a full program of the per- forming arts in Stuyvesant this year, drama was, as usual, very important. ln November, Stuy- vesantians, with females from Julia Richman High, performed in Fiorello. During the spring term the traditional senior play was presented. This year's selection was Julius Caesar, and was directed by Mr. Jensen, assisted by Mrs. Baron. The play was produced with an interpretation differing from the traditional approach. Saul Naishtat, Seth Reice, William Cortes, and David Hammer were chosen for the leading roles in the play. .Q A Cassius Cortes and Brutus Naishtat rehearse lines. The team got off to a fast start, winning its first three games. As a follow-up to last year's team, we look ahead to retaining the City Championship. This year's Chessmen includes Sandy Zabell, Andrew Soltis, Marc Yoffie, Thomas Mitchell, and Mark Carron. Also attending meets is the faculty advisor, Mr. Calabrese. This combination should prove to be another championship interscholas- tic team. DEBATING The oratorical ability of the Stuyvesant Debating Team was well demonstrated this year. Led by its captain, Richard Morris, the Debators started by defeating La Salle, Washington, Forest Hills, and Franklin, all by 4-O scores. Later on in the year we participated in the Stamford, Connecticut Invitational Tournament and took home first place honors, topping Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts schools. After this we entered and placed third in the Canisius Tourney. Captain Morris elucidates his contention. MATH This year proved no exception to the Stuyvesant tradition of producing fine math teams. Returning from last year's City Cham- pions was Harvey Sohnen, who this year led the team in many success- ful meets. Co-Captain Arthur Menikoff, Fred Zlotnick, Donald King, Harvey Spivack, Roy Gould, and Robert Byer held key positions, pro- viding the team with the knowledge and competitive ability so neces- sary for achieving a successful season. FALL SPORTS FOOTBALL What was an otherwise successful season, ended unexpectedly with the disappointment of the cancella- tion ofthe Clinton game. We are sure that Coach Murl Thrush and his fighting team agree that had this game been played, our rivals from the Bronx would not have had their spotless season. The team members played hard and rough on the football field. They rolled over Monroe and last year's division Champs Flushing. They lost to two tough Far Rockaway and New Dorp elevens. The final game really exemplified how well the boys played. They fought well and rallied to beat an in- spired Bayside team. Lance Olssen, Dennis Mihale, Freeman Brockington, Larry Goldin, Gary Glauberman, Arnold Prywes, Dennis Kent, and John Sullivan were only a few of the boys who put in many hours to compile our three and two record for the season. These boys played to win, with the attitude and conduct that make all Stuyvesantians proud of their team and their school. CHEERING Another important part of the football season is the cheering team. Its job is to shout encouragement to the players ancl to rally the spectators to enthusiasm and partici- pation in the game. This season's cheerleaders were led by Captains Robert Chicco of Stuyvesant and Rhoda Epstein of Hunter. It was the cry of Gimme an S ...... Haaren, one of the best teams in the city, beat us by the low score of 3-O. They were later found to be using professionals so the game was awarded to us by forfeit. ln our 7-0 defeat of Printing, Captain Even-Zahav scored four goals, Turynskyi one, and Yasieiko, our right fullback, two. A very exciting game was our defensive battle with Commerce. The game wound up in an unexpected O-O tie with this traditionally favored team. Slywka, Schott, Galindo, Holison, and Perich, the team's Most Valuable Player, starred on defense. lt's obvi- ous that goalie Nick Mychailuk played an exceptionally fine game, when you consider that Commerce's team was entered in the City Finals. After an unsuccessful first half of the season, we began to work as a team. We won our first game of the sea- son by beating Manhattan Vocational 58-49. Then we beat Music and Art 58-55. The high point ofthe season came as we upset our heavily favored rivals from Seward, 68-66. In that game, all five starters scored in double figures. BOWLING Under the coaching of Mr. Stanley Schulman, the bowling team compiled a fine 8-0 record. Led by Co- Captains Phil Kugler and George Robbins, the team went on to win the Manhattan Championship. Harriers sprint past Coach Davis TRACK AND FIELD AND CRQSS CQUNTRY Although the Harriers suffered great losses in last June's graduation, Coach Davis has good reason to be opti- mistic about this year's team. As captains of the '64 Harriers, Ricardo Quinones and Rudolph Scott form the nucleus of a team which should be able to duplicate last year's dual meet record of l'l-'I and possibly better our 7th place showing in the Manhattan Championship Meet. After disappointing showings in the Cardinal Hayes Games and the Bishop Louglhin Meet, the team redeemed itself. ln the St. Francis Meet, fine eFforts were recorded by Scott in the 1,000 Yard run, Perlis in the 300 yard dash, and the 4-man 880 yard relay team which was timed in l.4'l.2. The dual meet season began with a 35-20 win over Printing. Sparked by the return of Capt. Quinones and his victory in the 200 yard dash, the Harriers went on to take a number of T-2 finishes and the meet. Our Cross Country team, in 1963, experienced a fairly successful season according to Coach Davis. Captain Scott recorded best time of 14.32 at the City Championship Meet enabling the Har- Vfl A A J 'al as did Quinones. GOLF Although the senior strength of the Golf Team was depleted with the graduation of three stars, who were the core of the T963 Manhattan Champions, the team has bright prospects in view. Juniors Jeff Buechner, Bill Shapiro, Irving Levine and Bill Rosenbaum will form the nucleus around which this year's team will be built. The team now consists of 10 men: 3 non-players on for the experience, 5 regulars, and 2 substitutes HANDBALL This year's Handball Team is captained by returning lettermaln Stanley Blum. The other seniors on the team are Neil Cohen and Robert Darby. All three were outstanding players in their iunior year and will form the backbone ot this year's team. Coach Sidney Sheldon predicts the Wallbeaters will finish first in their division. They placed third last year.
