Within about two years the school was moved to a small frame building between 4th and 5th streets at Main with J. H. Mead as the first teacher. But this little school house has f long since disappeared and is even forgotten by most old-timers. ' In 1889 the citizens ofstuttgart, believing in the future of their little city, collected funds largely by donation, to build what was then a modern school building. Constructed on the corner of 4th and Leslie streets, it was two stories high with two rooms and a hall on each floor. There were four teachers employed who earned salaries which totaled S150 for aterm of four months. The structure served as the only school building until 1895, when two more rooms were added. With the addition of two more teachers the average salary was raised to 540, repre- senting a salary increase for each teacher of SZ. 50 each month. In 1906 two more rooms were added to the building, and in 1907 two-thirds of a block of ground was added to the school campus at a cost of SZ500. The city was growing and its prosperity was promising. In 1910 the board bought a block and a half of ground between 9th and 10th streets on Lowe--the highest and most beautiful part of the city--and within the next two years planned and constructed the high school build- ing as it stands today. The year 19lZ found the school housed in its splendid, new, and well equipped building which cost approximately S65, 000. The school was listed on the roll of the State -Aided institutions, and at the time it was one of the nine schools in this state on the list of schools accredited by the Commission on Accredited Schools of the Southern States and by the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges. These credentials made it possible for graduates to enter most leading colleges and universities without the necessity of entrance examinations. There were eight members in the first graduating class: Mr. John D. Rossman was super- intendent at that time. This building accommodated grades one through twelve and there was space left unused. The subjects which were taught were the traditional ones of today, and sixteen credits were required for graduation. The school quit the old house at 4th and Leslie when the beautiful new structure was com- pleted and from that time on, the oldbuilding with its echoes and its clinging memories grew more and more dilapidated. The shutters hung loose or fellawaygthe doors swung open from 1-ustedjiingesl the glass was broken in the windowsg the stairways creaked in sad complaint under the feet ofanyone who dared to ascend. So in 1927 it was torn down and in its place was built a red brick elementary school--the Julia Shannon School--so named in honor of Miss Julia Shannon who taught in Stuttgart Schools 47 years, from 1892 until 1939. This action was taken despite the dissent of some citizens in 1912 who claimed Stuttgart could not fill the high school building in fifty years. Through the years the enrollment of Julia Shannon School grew until it was necessary to have more grade schools. In 1949 Stuttgart Elementary School was built at 18th and Buerkle streets at an approximate cost of 5130, 0009 in 1954 NorthSide Elementary School at 119 E. Superior was completed at an approximate cost of 5100, 000. The high school continued to accommodate the junior high school grades as wellas the senior high until by 1955 it appeared burstingat the seams. So--in that year a modern junior high school was built at 19th and Buerkle streets at an approximate cost of 3160, 000. providing a sorely needed relief to classes held in basement rooms and crowded spaces. Yes, the junior high boys and girls left the haunts of dear Old Stuttgart High thus providing adequate space for the increased number of senior high students. And to these she yet stands .... a patriarch of old .... lovedand honored .... patiently bearing the weathering of time .... steadfastly nurturing the traditions and sentiments so dear to all who have tread her halls. - The first school building in Stuttgart was a .E little log house which was aformer slave cabin LFAY1 at Gum Pond Plantation in 1878. D. Clary who, with characteristic foresight and wise planning, has provided a broad- ened curriculum and enlarged school plant including six new modern buildings to care for an en- rollment which has grown from 1300 in 1945 to the present 1932. Always sensitive to the wishes and needs of the community, and realizing that the school is in a large sense a reflection of the community. Mr. Clary is well qualified to make the following state- ment: This is the finest community with better cooperat- ion andmorale on the part of students, and a better feeling towardthe schoolby its patrons than Ihave known elsewhere. teachers and students is a tribute to his administrative abil- i The fact that his suggestions are readily accepted byboth .J MR. WILLIAM C. BRASHER, PRINCIPAL Consideration for the needs of others characterizes Principal William C. Brasher, who is in his eleventh year at Stuttgart High School, Although a steadily rising enrollment continues to add responsibilities to his position, he finds time to discuss individual problems with students and teachers. A150 time to keep in close contact with organizations and to help with their interests. Realizing the value of leadership in our world today, Mr. Brasher is ever mindful of the school's responsibilities in this obligation, and his encourage- ment and support is felt by students and faculty. His high regard for the individual studentis well illustratedin the follow- ing remark, The students here are among the finest Ihave ever known in my twenty-eight years of working with young people. Youhave a high sense of moral conduct, good attitudes toward citizenship, and a wonderful school spirit, The fact that our graduates have excelled in colleges and univer- sities speaks for your scholastic interests. GHOSTS AND GOBLINS have been haunting the halls of SHS on Halloween night for the past nine years. Not only is the carnivala time of high celebration and good time, but each class and organization has the opportunity of sponsoring money-making schemes which help finance the school band. The Student Council, which sponsors the carnival, is in charge of the most important event of the evening, the crowning of the queen. This year Kathryn Barnett, a sophomore, was the lucky candidate. Maids, chosen by popular vote of the classes were Suzanne Bueker, Senior, Margie Wesinger, Junior, Joni Ragland, freshman, Irene Mouser, eighth grade, Patricia Curtis, seventh grade. The seniors, as has been their practice on Halloween for a number of years, held a cake walk in the girls' gymnasium, and rare, indeed, is the one who comes to the carnival and does not have a half dozen or so walks around the chalked-off arena in hopes of stopping on a lucky number. The juniors had charge of the cold drink stands. This has been the junior bid since the first car- nival in 1947. Those who have been around that long know well that along about five o'clock in the after- noon the day of the carnival husky junior boys lugging case after case of pop and pack after pack of ice into the hallways is indeed a familiar sight. The sophomores held a box supper in the recreation hall of the Episcopal Church. Some stead- ies proved to be a good source of revenue, and the fried chicken boxes of the sponsors also helped fill the coffers. The sophies looking forward to financing the junior-senior banquet the following year take their carnival responsibilities seriously. Among other booths were hot-dog stands, bingo games, dart throws, mechanical horses, mar- riage bureaus, short movies, lovers' lanes, jails, money on trees, and what-not. Uallhousedbehind blackand yellow streamers lining halls and classrooms, and open to a constant stream of eager patrons well into the late hours. Getting ready for the game! THE STUTTGART BOOSTER CLUB, organized twelve years ago under the leadership of Mr. Norvel Kelly, now has a membership enrollment of l54 students. Made up of sophomores, juniors and seniors, the club rallies school spirit at athletic contests, and acts as leader in student drives for Red Cross, March of Dimes, Fire ,Y Prevention, Safety, and other all-school endeavors. , ,L , 1 ,' B 1 , 1,x, I' Sports STUTTGART DIDN'T HAVE ONE of those best years in competitive sports this term, but fans can talk about All-State football player .IIMMIE ARGO and All-District players, MARVIN HAGAMAN and ARTHUR PENTICO, Records in some divisions show that the 'Birds were not in top form much of the time, and that ties and wins were not easily earned, The senior boys fared better in basketball than they did in football, boss- ibly because of injuries to key players early in the season. They won both the Clarendon Invitational Tournament and the DeValls Bluff Invitational Tournament at the beginning of the season, and continued to hold records in the following weeks. The senior girls' basketball team put up a good fight in the De Valls Bluff Tournament but were defeated before the finals despite a spirit that matched the best record in years past. ELSIE SPARKS, forward, and CAROLYN KIRCHOFF, guard, were named to ALL- District. But, , ,it takes more than just winning teams to call the year a successg and in the language of most Stuttgart fans, this year was a success. There were opportunities for much more thanjust tryingfor a place on the team. There were opportunities for fair play, loyalty, good sportsmanship, playing to the end when the odds were low, and grim deter- mination to give the best there was to give lk ith these came rewards rewards of spirit of morale These are the things that in the end make success that make the man and woman of tomorrow 125 Gene McClusky, Larry Almond, Carl Hiatt, Dennis Williams, Doane Newton, Doug Stephens. Fighting the Forrest City Mustangs, OCTOBER 28, the Ricebirds, quick to recover, turned faulty plays of the enemy into speedy gains. Don Mah- fouz picked up a fumble to run 60 yards for atouch- down, Marvin Hagaman intercepted apass to charge 70 yards for a second score, and Corky Owens re- covered a fumble on the 15 yard line to set up the third score. But, despite this bit of good luck, the Forrest City boys tucked under their belts a 34-Z1 victory. The Ricebirds' first victory came NOVEMBER 4 at the Homecoming game against Marianna. Joe Cvingerich ran 60 yards for a touchdown in the last seven minutes of the game, and Don Owens, within a matter of seconds, snatched up a fumble on the one yard line to step over for another counter, pushing upa winning score of Z3 against Marianna's 13. Stuttgart held her winning streak the following week, NOVEMBER ll, when the Ricebirds down- ed Searcy 34-ZO. Joe Gingerich scored two touch- downs, John Burt Ragland one, and Jimmie Argo two. Still in the winning lane, Stuttgart ended the sea- son NOVEMBER 24, by piling up their highest point total, 45-7, against their traditional rivals, the Brinkley Tigers.
