He enlisted in the Navy in 1971 and served for four years as a Hospital Corpsman with the First and Third Marine Divisions. He was released from ac tive duty as a Second Class Petty Officer Commander Coldiron graduated from the University of Kentucky with the Class of 1978 He received his commission from the Naval Offi cers Candidate School in 1979 and was assigned as First Lieutenant then Navigator in USS MOOS- BRUGGER CDD 9803 homeported in Charleston South Carolina. He next reported to Commander Hy dorfoil Squadron TWO in Key West Florida as the Squadron Operations Officer In 1984 Commander Coldiron was assigned as an instructor at the Surface Warfare Officers Basic Course in Newport Rhode Island and served as the Academic Director there before reporting to Depart- ment Head Head School After graduation he was as- signed to USS DAHLGREN CDDG 435 as the Opera- tions Officer He next reported to Commander Car rier Group TWO as the Assistant Surface Operations Officer then as the Surface Operations Officer Com- mander 4 oldiron deployed in USS CORAL SEA CCV 43? USS AMERICA CCV 661 and USS JOHN F KENNEDY CCV 675. He was assigned as a Battle Watch Captain for Battle Force Red Sea during Oper- ations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM in 1990-1991 Following the coalition victory Commander Cold- iron report as the Aide and Flag Lieutenant to the then - Vice Admiral J Paul Reason Commander Naval Surface Force U S Atlantic Fleet Command Coldiron was Executive Officer in USS THOMAS S GATES CCG 51D from 1993 to 1994 Upon completion of his Executive Officer tour Commander Coldiron served as the Chair of the Professional Programs De- partment and as an instructor in Leadership and Eth ics at the United States Naval Academy Commander Coldiron is both a Blue Nose and a Shellback signifying his crossing of the Arctic Circle and the Equator at sea He received the Arleigh Burke Award for inspirational leadership in his De- partment Head School class His official decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with three gold stars the Navy Commendation Medal for heroism with one gold star the Navy Achievement Medal Bat tle E Good Conduct Medal and various unit and cam- paign awards Commander Coldiron has a daughter Katharine a senior at Severn School in Severna Park Maryland who will attend Mt Holyoke College in the Fall
