Anchors AWEIGHV' Stump en route to Arabian Gulf area The Norfolk-based destroyer USS Stump fDD-9787 recently completed its transit through the Mediter- ranean Sea, en route to the Arabian Gulf for a six-month deployment. While in that region, Stump will become part of the U.S. 5th Fleet and participate in enforcing United Nations' sanctions againstlraq. ' With its Tomahawk missiles on board. Stump also will serve as a ready strike platform for Operation Desert Strike. The ship's Mediter- ranean transit was highlighted by a Tomahawk missile exercise with the USS Enterprise CCVN-657 Battle Group. The ship participated in the mis- sile exercise at approximately the same time that units in the Arabian Gulf were actually launching mis- siles against targets in southern Iraq. The exercise provided valu- able training in actual operations for Stump's strike teams. The exercise was followed by a three-dayport visit to Palma de Mal- lorca, Spain. ' During the port visit, Stump sailors enjoyed tours of the island, its excellent food found in its many restaurants and outstanding shop- ping venues. While transiting the Suez Canal, many crew members took turns running laps around the ship in 15- minute intervals in a physical litness evolution. The runners completed 1,400 laps around Stump, the equiva- lent of 233 miles. t
