Serv- ing as flagship for COMDESRON FOURTEEN, STUMP conducted Black Sea Operations, port visits and extensive ASW operations. As a result of her outstanding performance STUMP was awarded the l-lookem Award for ASW excellence by Commancer, U.S. Sixth Fleet. STUMP was the first Spruance Class Destroyer to transit the navigatlonally demanding Straits of Magellan and the largest ship to transit the entire Chilean inland waterway. ln October 1982, STUMP deployed to the Persian Gulf as part of the Middle East Force to conduct radar picket operations. Returning home in March 1983, STUMP participated in Solid Shield '83, a complex exercise involving U.S. and NATO Ships, and the U.S. Air Force. ln July, STUMP entered Coastal Drydock and Shipbuilding yard ln Brooklyn, New York for a 10-month overhaul tFtOl-ll.
