He was born in Ozark County, Missouri, and enlisted in the United States Navy in Kansas City, Missouri in August 1958, After attending recruit training, and Basic Hospital Corpsman School in San Diego, California, his first tour of duty was the Naval Hospital at Parris island, South Carolina. Selected as Command Master Chief for COMSUBRON 18 in 1981. As the first Corpsman selected as a Line Community Command Master Chief, this necessitated a rating change to PNCM. His awards include the Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal with seven stars, National Defense Medal, Sea Service Ribbon.
