Stump is reflected in the ship's coat of arms. The many decorations received by Admiral Stump for his exemplary service in the Pacific theater during World War ll are represented in the shield. The blue silhouette cross refers to the Navy Cross awarded him twice while in command ot Carrier Division 24, the white central star denotes the Silver Star medal awarded 'ifor conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against enemy-held islands. The Legion ot Merit, which he was awarded three times, is indicated by the crossed arrows in scarlet and white. The US. Army Distinguished Service Medal, received for exceptionally meritorious service as Com- mander of a combined operations center during the early part of the war, is represented by the colors scarlet, white and blue, the colors of the suspension ribbon of the medal. The four smaller stars in gold are in recognition of the attainment of the rank of Admiral, The gold shield is symbolic of knowledge and achievement. Admiral Stump's Navy career, his noted boldness, and his service aboard six aircraft carriers are represented by the griffin holding an anchor. Perhaps the best way to summarize Admiral Stump's philosophy towards his naval career, as well as the best way to summarize the conduct of the proud ship that bears his name, is the ship's motto: TENACITY: FOUNDATIGN CF VICTORY. if yy I HS Il 1 fflcer We Commander Perrotta was born in Coraopolis, Pa. on 31 March, 1942 and was raised in Ohio and Pennsylvania. CHILEAN INLAN TERW Y Like a blind man feeling for the door the destroyer Stump edged her way through the narrow channel. On either side, steep evergreen walls rose from the water, turned to stone and disappeared into the mist. On the bow, a leadsman watched the water, occasionally spar- ing a glance further ahead to where the passage seemed to end in a wall of rock and scrub pine. On the bridge of the Unitas XXVI flagship USS STUMP, the Chilean pilot guided his charge with confidence. The Naval exercises with the Chilean Navy had taken the Unitas fleet from Antofagasta to Talcahuano and finally to the start of Chile's inland waterway at the small city of Puerto Montt. Antiaircraft, antisubmarine, electronic warfare and amphibious exercises had been completed. Now the Unitas fleet moved southward through the approximately 600 miles of inland waterway. lt was a voyage few travelers have been fortunate enough to take. Chilels rail system ends at Puerto Montt. From there, there are few roads. There is only the inland waterway with its hundreds of islands and toruous channels, ending in the merger with the Strait of Magellan. The interior is a wild land of mountains and vast ranges of conifers from which smoking volcanoes rise. There are few people. The Chilean Navy is familiar with these waters. Much of their training is spent in exercises that involve the defense of this country's 5,000 mile coastline. The STUMP participated with the Chilean Navy in a fast patrol boat exercise. Armed with surface-to-surface missiles they would hide in coves, then make a surprise attack. Playing the role of the agressor force, STUMP with the help of its LAMPS helo successfully engaged the fast patrol boats with her Harpoon Missiles and 5 Guns. 75 vs Z ' P3H'A'!f v,fVv,5,7' 'Vs- -v-up 1 . 5, ff 0 y vwqx QMAIZ Q -112 1 Q 14 ff ' , J . , , E x ff K '5f?ZP5Z'Q:ff?f ' ' , , 5 ,V 'gf ff, ,3 ,Z ,A V ,f ,f ,, ,, W ,ww fu N qw., 0 M k S X.
