COMMA DIN G OFFICER FW C' Although apart from our families and friends and halfway around the world, our deployment was a mixture of ' m aril to ' bl but bus months and transits near and visits to several exotic areas. U55 STUMP s deployment was prl y enloya e, y , assume a patrol station at sea west and south of the conflicting nations of Iran and Iraq. We were at sea almost continually ' ' ' ' d u kee eriod in Bahrain once we arrived on station, with breaks only for a visit to Mombasa, Kenya an an p p p . Our cruise sounded difficult, and was, but our crew members worked hard, received invaluable training, and kept STUMP in the forefront of the Middle East Force. lmportantly. we provided a steadfast image for our allies, and each of us . . . . , d strove to be outstanding ambassadors of goodwill in every port we vrslte . Despite the hardship of a long tour away from home, the disappointment of not being home for the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's holidays with the special dinners Moms and wives lovingly prepare, and missing watching the Rose Bowl or Super Bowl with Dads and friends, we were there and we were ready! ln the Middle East, there is not peace on all the earth, but there is peace in our country, due in large measure to our Navy and ships at sea, like the STUMP. We constantly had our loved ones in our thoughts and prayers, and their support kept us going. The long letters describing the events of home brought constant smiles to 5 TUMP 's na vymen 's faces. The following pages illustrate some of our hard work, some of our more frivolous moments, and some of the sights we experienced. Our cruise book is intended to produce sm iles and memories as it's shared together with our families and friends. T. .loseph Lopez Q CDR USN
