55 STUMP DD-9 8 U55 Stump, the sixteenth of the Spru- ance class destroyers is assigned to Cruis- er Destroyer Group Eight and Destroyer Squadron Ten. Powered by gas turbines, similar in design to those on aircraft, Stump is a multi-mission ship whose pri- mary mission is anti-submarine warfare. Stump was commissioned in Aug of 1978 and hasn't stopped since. Unitas XXII is Stump 's second major deployment having completed her first Med cruise in I980. On her maiden deployment to the Med in l980 Stump ammassed an impressive ar- ray of firsts . Allowing no opportunity for distinction to pass, Stump was award- ed the coveted anti-submarine hook 'em award during the l980 Med cruise. Unitas offered new horizons and challenges and Stump continued undaunted, increasing her eminence throughout the world. And doing it proudly.
