From our first day at school as freshmen and until our last as seniors, we recall all our happy, joyous moments. This Hopewell, The Spirit That is l967, will help us retrace those mo- ments as we leap through the pages of our years here at Struthers High. Retracing this year, we find those exciting times coming to mind and realize it all ended too soon. The various sports, football and basketball, the thoughts of the Homecoming, and all the fun in those crowded halls. For the last time you saw all these special activities. Yes, your special year has come to an end. With loyalty, you have sung your Alma Mater together as a class for the last time, But these memories will never end. And so it is that we, the Hopewell staff of 1967, present to you this Hopewell, hoping that for each one a memory will be unfolded and brought out in the pages of The Spirit That is l967. ...mn .tw f, L ww espn A: ?h ww ' Tifftiffii Q' 1 52 TW T V ifisi, V . ' ' I I' ill if -Q5 As the years go by the memories of the past grow vague, but we will always remember our school days. As frosh we were a nervous and excited group trying to equal our upperclassmen. We took on a business-like air when we elected David Macejko as president. To assist him we chose .lanet Buisko as vice- presidentg Linda Kossick, secretary, and Sandy Szalaj, treasurer. Upon electing Mr. Kerlek, popular, head basketball coach, our spon- sor, we began making plans for our many activities including a Christ- mas Party, Class Picnic, and our Slum-it Day! As sophomores 'we began to realize more fully the value of an education. We chose J eff Pantall as president this year and J oe Haben- schuss, vice-presidentg Sandy Rubicky, secretary, and Carl Finamore, treasure. Serving us as sponsor, Mr. Campana helped organize such activities as our Christmas Party and class picnic. Our junior year brought the eagerness of convassing the area for ads for our own Junior Football Programs and the excitement of sell- ing them on cool autumn nights. The spring before we chose Linda Kossick, president, Elaine Blangero, vice-president, Bonnie, Nackino, secretaryg and Jerri Wells, treasure, to organize fund raising ac- tivities for our Junior-Senior Prom. As we made plans and decora- tions to coincide with the Theme Ebb Tide we realized that soon we would be seniors. Finally the day arrived when we took our first steps through the doors of S.H.S. as members of that all-important Senior Class. We realize that everything has flown by fast, too fast, and now just the memories remain. Your last football and basketball games, your last Homecoming and that beautiful Junior-Senior Prom. Finally the day came that we waited all year for-Graduation. v S 9 L L Q .s- 1 1 , ,I -75 '-Q. A CADEMI C A DREW S. IO4 I05 Football S.H.S.-3 Alliance-0 Starting off the 1966 football season in good fashion, Coach Bob Commings' mighty Wildcats upset the heralded Alliance avia- tors for the third year in a row. Kicking specialist, Ed Craft, booted a 24-yard field goal in the second quarter to take home a victory for the Cats. Defensive tackle, Jeff Pantall, Chris Ellis, and defensive back, Vince Suber, did a fine job in containing the Aviators. S.1'1.S.-18 East-12 The Struthers Wildcats rallied for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to defeat the East Golden Bears as quarterback Vince Suber tossed for three touchdowns. In the second quarter, a Suber-to-Spano pass covering 4-O yards netted the Cats their first score. . Junior, Neil Lawn, grabbed Suber's other two scoring passes from 25 and 16 yards out. The defensive work of senior 'center Lou Vargin and guard Dave Nackino aided the Wildcat victory. S.1-1.5.-28 Brookfield-6 Struthers launched its Steel Valley Conference competition with an impressive 28-6 victory over the Brookfield Warriors. Veteran quarterback Vince Suber kept the Brookfield defense guessing on keeper plays, as he scored two touchdowns on runs of one and five yards. Hard-nosed Andy Mogulich and speedy John Spano tallied for the other two scores on runs of 12 and 3 yards, respectively. In the third quarter, the Cats tacked on a safety as the Brookfield punter was forced into the end zone. 1 1 --,.z.,l ...bm .- .. --. -.... . ..... .El '...,...- F irst Row L. tq R.: E. Craft, A. Junior fullback, Dennis Bogdone, spearheaded the attack as he scored two T.D. from the two and four-yard lines. Talented Vince Suber started the ball rolling as he rambled 22 yards for a first period T.D., and later added the conversion points after Bogdoneis second touchdown. Neal Lawn capped the evening's point making ,on a nifty 17-yard run to paydirt. Ed Craft hauled in a pass for the conversion. Senior back, Carl Finamore, and linebacker, Terry Stocker, played a tremendous game on defense. S.H.S.-14 Fitch-38 The Austintown Fitch Falcons upset the Struthers Wild- cats in an important Steel Valley tilt with a convincing 38- 14- triumph. The Cats were hampered when ace quarterback, Vince Suber, injured his ankle on the first play of the game, but that didn't stop him from scoring the Cats first touch- down. Struthers led in the statistics, but numerous fumbles and pass interceptions hurt them. The Cats added their sec- ond touchdown with 53 seconds left, on a 32-yard scamper by Don Clontz, who took over as quarterback for the in- jured Suber. S.H.S.-42 Wilsori-8 Sophomore quarterback Don Clontz, substituting for the injured Vince Suber, played an outstanding game as his fine faking completely baffled the Wilson defenses. Senior halfback John Spano was the leading ground gainer as he compiled 133 yards in 17 carries, ripping off touchdown gallops of 59 and 7 yards. ' Neal Lawn, displaying tremendous running ability, also featured in the Wildcat's attack as he tallied twice, one a spectacular 72-yard scoring play, and the other, a 53-yd. scamper to pay-dirt on a neatly-executed double reverse. ecard S.H.S.-O Akron Hoban-56 Akron Hobanls Knights, ranked sixth in the state, romped over the injured riddled, 56-0 to hand the Cats their second defeat of the season. The Wildcats were no match for the classy Knights as they held Struthers to a 127 yards and only five first downs. Hobanls defense just wouldn,t yield as they allowed Struthers to get past the midfield stripe only twice reach- ing Hoban's 13 midway through the fourth quarter. S.H.S.-14 Hubbard-28 The Hubbard High Eagles knocked Struthers from the Steel Valley Conference Championship by landing the Cats a decisive 28-14 setback. The Wildcats' first score was a 15-yard keeper by Vince Suber, climaxing a key 33-yard pass-play from Suber to Dennis Bogdon.
