Staying with her American sister, Cindy Hagelstein, Bente graced our halls with her schlide rule, winning the hearts of students and faculty alike. It has not been a one-sided experience, though. America taught her how to get along with its friendly outgoing natives. She said, All this makes you realize how much you can receive when you give yourself. At left, Bente models her native costume which she designed and embroidered herself. Below, in one of her many hand-knit ski sweaters, she joins Joyce Slagle in a lively discussion at the Christmas A.F.S. party. l v 19

Colonels bid cz fond farewell After eleven years of dedicated service, our boys, guidance counselor, Mr. Donald De Nardo, having been appointed assistant principal at Academy, has left Vincent. From his arrival in 1952, to 1958, Dondi taught civics and social studies. In 1958 he was appointed boys' guidance counselor. Although he was active in many extra-curricular activities, his flair for the thea- tre constituted the nucleus around which the Dramatics Club was built. One could often see him in the audito- rium long after school hours, directing a rehearsal for one of the many plays produced by his groups of ener- getic Thespians. His innate sense of humor eased tension in any situ- ation, and it served with his understanding and pa- tience to help anyone who sought his advice. Apprecia- tion of his work was shown in 1959, when the student body dedicated the Spokesman to him. We shall miss his mischievous grin and hearty chuckle, but we sincerely hope that he continues to receive the honors he so richly deserves. Best wishes in all you attempt, Mr. DeNardo! After many years of dedicated service to Vincent, Mrs. Held, the sight-saving and orthopedic specialist, has retired. She helped the special students participate in as many normal school activities as possible. By either reading or playing recordings of course text- books, she assisted the students with visionary difficul- ties to accomplish their work. As a sort of jack-of-all- trades, she would supplement any subject that needed extra explanation. She taught everything from plane geometry to English literature. Her tireless efforts to make her students as self-sufficient as possible were successful, in that many of her students not only grad- uated but went on to college. Mrs. Held is now in Florida with her husband, and plans to do more travelling. Between trips she keeps herself very busy with her lifelong hobbies of sewing, reading, and interior decorating. 18

1 ueen Emily Donna Baird and Spokesman Queen Emily Fatica, portraying Swamily, predicts a victory for the red and black during the Kiski rally. Chosen by the student body of Strong Vincent to reign as the 1965 Spokesman Queen was lovely Emily Fatica. Her school spirit, quiet charm and grace, com- bined with a warm personality make Emily a popular senior and a most worthy queen. Emily and five other contestants were nominated by the students as Spokesman Queen candidates. The girls carried on the traditional campaign with posters, slo- gans, and tags. They thus encouraged the students to purchase a yearbook so that they would be eligible to cast a' ballot for the candidate of their choice. Everyone joins the Spokesman staff in extending their sincere congratulations to Emily, an excellent choice. l
