'i Hs , I X' 1 Y K STRONG HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL A foot path, in 1806, led from the village of 100 inhabitants to Erie's first hewed log temple of learning at Sev- enth and Holland. This and Erie Acad- emy, built in 1819 at Ninth and Peach Streets, were the only schools for almost twenty years. ln 1848, the small, in- significant schools that had risen all over the city were combined into two larger buildings, and education toolc on a high- er ranlr in grade and influence. The Board of Control of 1866 con- solidated the higher classes of schools, from which grew our present Strong Vincent. ln that year Erie High School was opened at Seventh and Holland but later was transferred to Tenth and Sassafras. The need for better schools in 1919 caused Erie High to be divided: Academy to serve South Erie, and Cen- tral for the remaining part of the city. Eleven years later, in 1930, our new modern school replaced old Central High. Since its organization, Strong Vincent High has made it easy for a pupil to rise, and difficult to fall. I . Once, only the bare necessities were taught. Recog- nition was found only through recitation, and the central person, the school master, was a strict disciplinarian. Today, subjects are more interesting because the idea of self-activity has been introduced. lt is the part of education that puts freedom, originality, and self-discipline into our demo- cratic. schools. The school life here at Strong Vincent, along with educatiorrthrough books, is greatly responsible in maturing the student and in molding an exemplary citizen. Before that, partic- ipation in sports was to be found only in public parks and on hall teams organized by individuals. National groups lceph to themselves, sought out their own amusements and mixed with others. Now high school sports are an important part of evcfyone's daily living. Newspaper and radio coverage of a wide variety of sports mal-res it easy for the present day Erieite to follow the sport ol his interest. g Athletics in the school, like everything else, has a lt provides social outlets and gives the participant the practice in co-operation which is so necessary in life.
