HARDSCRABBLE s T H s OUR HEROES The blography of Great Men says Carlyle IS the Hlstoiy of the World That great minus are made and not born seems to be taken for granted almost universally ln this age of varled specialization but be that as It may ln the history of every nation a few great leaders have de veloped from a large percertage of less brilliant fellow countrymen United States our own be loved country has like the rest ltS highly renowned and respected Americans We do not so much respect these men for their strength of intellect as for their use of lt in the service of humanity We are all hero worshippers we are proud that we are for no nobler feeling than th1S of admlra tion for one higher than himself dwells in the breast of man Some of the American Heroes whose genius and patrlotlsm will never be forgotten by thelr countrymen are George Washington great military genius and patriot Abraham Llncoln leader and preserver of our Umon Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and James Russell Lowell famous poets A few of our well known contemporary Americans who at present occupy places ln the hearts of the people as well as ln the Hall of Fame are Luther Burbank the master of naturallsts Thomas A Edison one of the greatest mventors and scientists m the world John P Morgan na tional financier and the late ex president Theodore Roosevelt Each of these great men proclaims success 'to be obtained by dlnt of hard labor and not by in splratlon Edison truthfully says Success IS one per cent lnsplratlon and nlnty nine per cent persplratlon Many of our greatest men of today commenced their work under adverse condltlons and gained positions of note by overcommg the big difficulties and by taking advantage of their opportunltles The average young person of this generation fails to make the most of his talents because he falls to take advantage of educational opportunltles which are offered Education IS exceedmgly easy to obtain today ln comparison to what it was 1n Abraham Lmcoln s time or even thirty years ago Abraham Lincoln whom many consider our greatest American was handicapped in every way durmg his youth Lincoln was unable to secure much education but through perslstent read mg and dogged striving toward a far off goal this poor backwoods boy became the Presldent of the United States and Freedom s dearest friend Thomas A Edison another man handicapped ln his youth by difficult circumstances worked as a telegraph operator to earn morev for his living expenses He waited and worked patlently at his chosen field of electrical experlmentatlon until the big opportunity came, when another name was added to the nation s list of great men The late Theodore Roosevelt who died an untimely death when his SCFVICCS were most needed by his country will always be remembered by every boy and girl and loyal American as an ag gresslve clean and successful countryman who fought for and loved his country only as a real patriot can Though Roosevelt had every advantage ln education he attamed his place ln the nation s his tory by settmg his goal and by overcoming obstacles Teddy Roosevelt probably represents more than any other man especially in the mmds of children our genulne American spirit R ose velt was a lover of clean sports an energetic man and a patriot who was never backward about expressing his personal vlews We might add to Carlyle s list of Heroes the Hero as a man of Science for probably no bet ter example of success attamed through hard work patience and perseverance may be shown than the success of Luther Burbank our greatest naturalist Burbank commenced his life work ln his youth when he learned many of the secrets of nature through careful observation Burbank loved to experiment with flowers and plants always with the ldea of lmprovlng upon these little children of nature His first success was the developmg of She famous Burbank potato which he sold to the government for seed at one hundred and fifty ollars With this first recompense for his labors the young naturallst purchased a ticket for Call forma which has a climate more suited to his work than the variable weather of New England Since this first advance along the road to success Luther Burbank has out distanced all com petltors ln rendering service to mankind through development of the plant world To Burbank we owe our thanks for the famous Shasta Daisy the Fire Poppy the new strawberry the plum quot and a great number of other useful and wonderful plants As an example of how this master of plants has never let profit lnterfere with his service he says concerning the production of a superior wine grape I have never produced a superior wine grape and lf I ever do produce one It shall be at once destroyed No wlne grape will ever be sent into the world from my plant school To this great broad minded man and friend of Nature we owe our thanks for the letter which he so wllllngly sent because we were sure it would make our Hardscrabble more of a success Not only did Burbank send a letter but he also sent a beautlfully illustrated book explaining the work which he IS now carrying on ln Santa Rosa California This autographed book entitled 'Luther Burbank and His Plant School will be treasured by the students m years to come as one of Streator High s most cherished possesslons THE EDITOR Page
