W D WALDRIP A B Un1ve1s1ty of Indlana Prmclpal THE REAL PURPOSE OF OUR HIGH SCHOOL The general notlon of a Hlgh School 1S that lt IS a place where students are prepared for en trance to college or umverslty At one tlme thls may have been ltS chlef function but that ldea IS falrly well changed now Our Hlgh School IS the Umversxty of the common people maxnly and a preparatory school for the umverslty secondarlly We attempt 'to prepare for llfe-to make better cltlzens to stop the spread of socxal unrest Many are not able to attend hlgher 1nst1tut1ons of learmng many are not fitted for the lnten slve tralnlng of college but all are to become cltlzens ln a better state and that IS the group that deserves the greater amount of attentlon To be a better group of cltlzens than the present generatlon should be the ambxtlon of our Hugh School puplls of today Thls mea s much more than book learnmg' It lnclude lntelllgence m votmg servlce to others and a hlgh sense of morals If thls better class IS to take the place of the present generaftlon the schools of now must fit the students of now for the place they are to fill Leaders are always needed we always have them but so often our leaders of today are blmd leaders of the blmd Our Hxgh Schools must dlscover the puplls that have latent qualltles and en courage them untll they function properly Then w1th a more lntelllgent cltlzenry and wxser lead ers we can enter on a better perlod of llfe The every day men and women should have knowledge and appreclatlon of the beautles of ht erature muslc and art even lf they do work wlth thelr hands for thelr lxvmg The Idea of the Man wlth a Hoe should no longer be the ldea of the worklng world Many of us are born wlth but one talent In the old ldea school those students were the blockheads to be put aslde as soon as posslble Many of our greatest men were ellmmated from Hlgh School and classed as fallures because they had but one talent The modern Hugh School must 'take these people wlth one ldea and help them develop that ldea untll they have made a place for themselves ln our Lommumty All men are created equal In opportunity to develop thelr own talents to the utmost and we must furmsh that opportunlty But most of all we are all to lxve together ln some one commumty and bear wlth one an other s fallures and pecullarltles gosslp IS merely a few persons dlscusslng another s fallure We must tram to bulld up and not destroy and we early learn to pull together IH our school as what harms one harms all and what helps one helps all To prepare for a better broader happler more useful cltxzenshlp ln Streatfor IS our real func tlon as a High School W D WALDRIP Page Exght l . . , . .
