1975 One day I hntched a rlde on a garbagc wagon owned by the I.ew1s Kxmbrough Samtatron De partment The fnrst stop took me to the back of the Queen Theater where I savs Bouncmg Boy Iee Akms makmg h1s fxrst pnano recxtal ln front of the local muslcnans club I heard the VOICE of the owner yellmg 'Throw the bum out' It was Bull Coleman speakmg Our truck was begxnnmg to move and I Sald goodbye to this scene The next stop brought us to the rear of Gary Sortors barber shop In h1s chan I saw Leo Royster gettmg a shave He had been playmg the horses smce he had left school Slttmg ln the other chaxrs were hrs same old cromes Wlley Crocker B1ll Farms and Oscar Gower I could not seem to place the occupatxon of those men Our next yog brought us to the Maurme FOSter Beautne Shoppe Under the ha1r drver wa Nancy Rlggs now the wxfe of the cattle rancher Daryl Fisher talkmg to Enedma Rulz an employee That was enough rndmg 1n a garbage heap for me So I hopped off There came Tronye Alex ander and her flagpole slttlng partner Robxe Eastlack They were takmg the tram north where they had a new yob srttmg poles so I tagged along Next we were at the Humphrey Speaks lGary and Shlrleey Railroad Statron Zoom We were III the cold North It seemed that Tronye and Robre were gomg to do a flagpole sxttmg job for a hosprtal I found 35 the qhlef surgeon Roy Murdock and h1S two nurses Lmda Parman and Betty Tlckel These three get around The last I heard was that they were at the Capxtol operatrng on the blg toe of our President Henry Gobel the broke lt 1n a pohtxcal frght w1th h1s opponent Dorothy Bomfreld It looked as though she mlght be our fxrst lady Presldent Then along came a taxl wxth Ellen Rogers at the wheel It didnt look as though lt would be safe but I guess lt was for she had a passenger by the name of ean Busby She was tryxng to get Ellen to drlve her hot rod 1n the races I Walked down town mstead of rndmg un that heap Then suddenly rt seemed as though a meteor flew past It was pust Morne Efaeaff If he kept that up he mlght make the Olympics Suddenly I felt hungry and rlght ln front of me was errys we oxnt owned by Ierry Nana mura Thls place was famous for 1ts hash wh1ch Was slung by Shrrley Wxllnams the famous Hash Slmger There was even entertarnment there Hot Foot Martuccr was domg a mad charleston to the muslc of Val Zumga and hrs Vahant Valentmes who were Carolyn Rowell tuba xmmy Nor r1s vrolrn and Delores Hubbard drums I began to get txred of that place and longed to go south I had heard that the army was sendmq General Io Wayne Rowell south on an Important mlsslon and I hoped that I could tag along We were south at last and lt was very hot I dldnt know whether I was gomg to lrke rt when I saw that we were gomg mto a research bullchng Where thmgs were always blowmg up I learned that we were gomq to talk to the genrus Gary Garlm the famous scxentlst about some secret expernment for the government We recelved the papers and left to meet the contact man Lloyd Thetford of the F B I Those dangerous jobs really frrghtened me On our way we passed a sxte where a skyscraper was gomg up The contractor of the opera t1on was Mary Blackwood who was quarrelnng wrth a carpenter Don Berryhlll Nearby stood a man that looked as lf he needed a frlend Poor bum' I thought how terrlble to have to llve along the ra1l road tracks all your llfel To my surprlse a closer look revealed that lt was an old frlend LeRoy Spuhlerl At that moment I heard a tram comlng along the track It was one that I had never rldden before so I hopped on I had to be careful because the bug game hunter ohn Braughton was on board Upon seemg me he fa1nted and the bubble blowmg champ Waymon Roberson tr1ed to revrve hlm In my haste to get out of that car I came upon Weston Butts washmg dishes at the s1nk ln the kltchen I asked the dlstmgulshed author Dxck Haberman who the conductor on the tram was and much to my surprlse I found that Charles Smay was the conductor It seemed stuffy ln the tram I declded that xt was t1me to dnsembark and get on sohd ground Near the place where I got off the tram a rodeo was ln progress Two of the chlef attractxons were Mary Butterfleld bronc buster and Robert Phxlllps bull frghter They vxere both trulv top per formers Behmd me I had some fam1har vorces shouung Peanuts' Popcorn' The enthusxastnc vendors vxere Bobby Nlen and Max Hurt Among the xnterested spectators were Senator Ioaquln Rodrrguez and Mayor Lyman Wnlson wlth thexr body guards Cloteen McCowan and Nelda Dunn Presently I caught a whnff of a garbage truck and lt so happened to be where th1s eprsode began Thus endeth a day rn the llfe of Al the Rodent Page 22 , . . To learn from the books of knowledge and play from the ways of happiness. With those walls fell many memories, both pleasant and otherwise. Memories of gay laughter in the ong hallway. memories of the Spartan Knight pledg es' shining shoes at the base of the study hall stairs. Many of their parents had rehearsed their roles for later life within those same rooms enrolling in the same office and sittin: at the same desks.
