Each year finds a new group of students-freshmen in other words-
entering high school perhaps with fear and trembling, but also with high
hopes and aspirations. This year found forty-eight freshmen starting a new
phase of their education.
High school brings them not only education but also an opportunity to
participate in the school activities. They have taken full advantage of this
part of school life.
The girls have been particularly active in sports-they almost won the
championship from the seniors in baseball! The following freshmen girls
have made various All-Star teams: E. Fisher, E. Lcwis, M. M. Niolfino, M.
Perkins, H. Stout, E. Brister, D. Clifford.
The freshmen showed great interest in debating and there was keen coni-
petition for positions on the class teams. Martha Perkins and Arline Aesch-
bacher were finally selected to uphold the affirmative and Alice Ioyce Collins
and Ralph Nickerson, to uphold the negative. At the end of the debating
season the freshmen found that they had won three debates. The debaters
in all the classes were ranked as to their effectiveness as speakers, Alice
Ioyce Collins ranked third out of sixteen debaters.
The freshmen have given two assembly programs which were highly
praised. A number of the members of the class are becoming accomplished
actors and actresses. By the way, a freshman, Genon Shuster, won first
prize in the amateur show sponsored by the sophomores.
The freshmen wish to take this opportunity to thank their adviser, Mr.
Conley, for the help he has given them. He has done much to make them
good citizens of the Strathmore Union High School.
