EDITOR'S NOTES
In the course of events in this, our last year in High School, we have found
that we are really sorry to be leaving our dear old S. H. S. When you, the
Freshmen of 1940, get to be seniors, I think that you will find that you are 1105
nearly so glad as you thought you would be. You find that there are a lot of
past memories that you are afraid you will never again experience. Those are
the things that you will treasure the most.
In publishing this annual, we have had a lot of fun, and now that it is
nearly finished, we are indeed very sorry.
Do you want to know why we are sorry that we are leaving this school?
Well, we will make a meager attempt to tell you. When we think that only
next year we will no longer be a part of the school that we have known so long,
it almost gives us heart failure. Just think! The cry most often heard around
the seniors is that next year we won't be here to tell the underclassmen what
to do and to help initiate the fish, or do a lot of the things that we are used to
doing.
We worked ten long and tiring years before we got to be called the dignified
seniors, and now that we finally reached this age, we had much rather be called
just plain old fish.
We, the seniors, know that we will never again have as much fun as we had
while we were sophomores. During our soph year, we had 13 parties and about
9 picnics. And we had more fun than any class in school. That was the year
that there was only one senior girl, so we sophomore girls had a lot of fun playing
seniors. I think that the most of the girls attended every affair during senior
week of that year.
But those days are gone forever!
When we were fish, Mr. Ballengee was our sponsor, and he was really swell.
We only wish that we had him again for our sponsor next year when we are fish.
We are dreading that time when we will graduate and have to think of all
the fun we have had and to think that we will never again see the good old days
when we can think and play in high school.
In our first grade class, there were thirty-three of us. Now in that original
cl-ass, there are only four of us left. Those four are Lewis I-Iigginbottom, Jr.,
Margaret Ritchie, Betty Rhea Lee, and Mary Woodford Ki-dwell. Those four
have been faithful to us all during their life. None of them except Mary
Woodford has ever attended another school. QI don't think that she liked it very
well so she came back to usl.
When we got to be Juniors, we thought we were just as big as anyone, but
we would be fairly glad when we would get to sit at the head table.
And now, the time has come for us to say farewell to the school that we
love so dearly. And always will we be singing the school song that we composed
with the help of our beloved sponsor, M. E. Cleavlnger, Jr.
Dear old Stratford High School,
We're in love with you,
Dear old Blue and White
You're our colors true.
Keep the spirit glowing,
Till the battle's through,
Dear old Stratford High School,
We're in love with you.

FOREWORD
It has been our greatest desire and pleasure to make this 1940 Las Pampas
a true, faithful reflection on our never-failing activities. We, the seniors, dread
the time when we will no longer be a part of this school that we so dearly love,
but We will forever keep in our memories the wonderful activities that everyone
so faithfully took part in. Down through the years, We will always have our
annuals to look at and to assist our memories to remember these wonderful high
school days.

FACULTY
The faculty members of the Stratford High School have all been a great
help in the making of this annual. We wish to express our appreciation to
them, although in no way could we be good enough to them. Mrs. A. W. Allen,
the first grade teacher, has been here for many years. She started the original
class of 1929 in the very first grade. The year of 1940 is the second year of Mrs.
Walter Pendleton in the Stratford Public Schools. From all we can gather, Mrs.
Walter Le-e, the third grade teacher, is very well liked, and is a grand teacher.
Mrs. John Bird is the principal of the grade school and the teacher of the fourtxh
grade. Mrs. Bird was our second grade teacher. Mr. Jack Veazey, the band
director, is the fifth grade teacher the first half of every day. Mrs. Milton is
their teacher for the rest of the day. Mrs. Van Boston is the teacher of the
sixth grade, and we all think that she is a very good one. Mr. Graves is a grand
seventh grade teacher as well as a marvelous girls' basket ball coach.
Now for the high school teachers. Mr. Tabor is a friendly sort of a fellow, and
we all like him even if he is the superintendent. Mr. Harman is the principal
of the Stratford High School. Miss Feild is the sponsor of our annual, as Well as
the English and Spanish teacher. Mr. M. E. Cleavinger, Jr., is the sponsor of
our cl-ass, and the historian of the school. Miss Sybil Gidden was the Home
Economics teacher the first half of the year. Miss Maurine Reeder taught the
last half. Mrs. Flores is a grand music teacher. In fact, we have a nice group
of teachers.

MEET THE SENIORS OF '40
Ladies and Gentlemen, may we present:
William Russel Boney- He has proved to us that a trumpet in the hand
makes sweet music in the earg -depending on whose hand it is, of course.
Allan Reed Cartrite- Some say he likes the ladies. Some say, no, it's the
ladies who like Lhim. We say we bet the feeling's mutual and we can't blame
either of them.
Melba Joyce Coffman- Now here's a girl who would delight any postman's
heart, always writing letters. H'mmm, we wonder!
Verne W. Foreman- Always winnin', always grinnin', always feelin' fine-
tra la. Pardon us for singing, but the song seemed to fit in.
J. Lewis Higginbottom, Jr.- As far as we know, he never had a serious
thought in his life. But who can tell? He's made us a swell president the last
two years.
Owen E. Hudson- Speaking of teasing, all boys are pretty good at it, but
Owen has the rest of them tongue-tied. tWe know something on you, though,
Owen. Remember that nickel?J
Mary Woodford Kidwell- No use trying to pick a fight with Puddenfoot.
Not that she couldn't defend herself, but she just isn't that kind of people.
James Robert Kirkwood- Corky has nicknames too, lots of them. He
doesn't seem to be suffering from it, however, and can always manage to grin
and bear it.
V. Orland Lasley- Tall and dark? Yes. Handsome? Well, that's what
lots of girls have told us, and who are we to start an argument?
Samuel R. Lasley- Going by that big smile and innocent manner, you'd
never guess that he'd been up to mischief. But we know who put that tack in
Mamma's boy's chair, we know, Sam.
Betty Rhea Lee- Just another bit of evidence that that old saying,
"Beautiful but dumb" is a lot of hoey.
Margaret Ritchie- As for Queenie Mag, we must confess. we just collected
a nice little sum for promising not to dish any dirt. tSure, it's bribery. So
what? Remember what Confuscius say.J
Delmer Schafer- Looking for a smart boy, did you say? Well, here's one
with only 1 demerit. Either he's an angel or you've found your man. CYou
guess.J

SENIOR CLASS HISTORY
Once upon a time there was a little fish. In falct, once there were about
thirty little fishes all as green as gourds. We were very much at sea, but Mr.
Ballengee proved himself to be a "whale of a sponsor" and guided us over the
rough spots of that first year.
Coach had his session with our sophomore class. If all play and little work
makes Jack a bright boy, all of us must fairly shine. We had that year besides
the four festivities allowed each class, about 13 parties and 8 or 9 picnics and a
banquet.
Our Junior year, Mr. Harman sponsored us right through plane geometry.
Just to show that we were really growing up, We presented a play called "The
Haunted Tea Room" fplenty of play practice, of coursel, and had another
banquet, this time on a crepe paper ship.
Now as dignified seniors, We know our way about this school. iAny time
that you undeirclassmen want to know something an-d have the money-J. We've
had a carnival, given another play, and presented a radio to the school. Mr.
Cleavinger, who pulled us through our hectic soph year, is our final sponsor.
We have thoroughly enjoyed the school and teachers of Stratford High and hope
the feeling is mutual.

SEN ICR ALBUM
We wouldn't think of boring you with our class album, but if you want to
skim through it, we've got the best pages dog-eared. You know, the shot of
little Willie, age six months, in a birthday suit. iWhy, Bill, you're blushingll
Here's an interesting study of Jimmie and Roy. lR,emember them?J
Tch! Teh! Can this be the Seniors playing hide-and-seek at a party?
Come out from under that tub, Owen, we see you.
Ah yes, the one and only sophomore banquet.
This one didn't take very well. lThank goodness? Seems to be some sort
of night view of the Junior Play cast. Wonder where on earth it was taken!??
What? No, that isn't a prize fight. Just a little shot we picked up out at
Lasley's one summer day.
Another gathering at Kidwe1l's house. '1'hat's Allan turning the ice cream
freezer and Sam and Lewis sampling the cake.
Oh-oh! What happened here? Were you trying to play wild stick horse
with that broom, Margaret? Or what makes you look so dizzy?
H'mmm-relic from a freshman picnic. Why, Betty! Can that be you
and Allan sitting under that bush?
And so all the little seniors grew to be strong an-d healthy. They dldn't eat
their spinach, but they had plenty of good fresh milk to drink
Another picnic- senior year. Trying to drown yourself in that cream-can,
Joyce? Or merely getting a drink of water?
0ld-timers- a sophomore shot of Sam and Flora fR.emember?J and one of
Elsie Pearle talking to somebody in a bright green jallopy.
Close-wp of our junior banquet. Pretty ritzy affair- eh, what? lAnd to
think nobody got seasick.J
Extra! Extra! This year's Carnival! Look at the crowd round that
cider-stand. And there go Verne and Queenie Mag to the throne followed by a
handsome group of Lords and Ladies.
Whoops, my dear! Another dark picture. Say, for Pete's sake! How
many seniors can get in a closet at one time? Anyhow?
I guess the best one is the shot we saved for the last. Portrait of a real
sponsor. Meet Coach, Mrs. Coach, and Family.

SENIOR HIGHLIGHTS
SENIOR CARNIVAL
On November 4, 1939, that annual senior carnival was held with the usual
festivities of bingo, fortune telling, various booths, and several new features.
The senior candidate was 'crowned queen of Senior High School ln a, ceremony
in which all the high school and grade school participated. The largest amount
of money ever amassed at a Stratford Senior Carnival was received. The Queen
of the Grade School was crowned. The Kings of the High School and Grade
School respectively are Verne Foreman and Don Riffe. The Queens were
Margaret Ritchie and Shela Duby.
PARTIES
And as for parties, Well, this class has beat everyoneg that is, everyone that
ever competed. We have most of them afraid of us. We have Won the master
award for the largest number of parties. And fun. My gracious, you surely
don't think that the seniors are too dignified to have fun when the opportunity
comes. Confidentially, we are not dignified at all, but We seem to make a
pretty good impression on some people. CThank heaven, we have some one

SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY
Hello, senior speaking. Oh, hello, Mr. and Mrs. Public. What? You
haven't heard the radio that we presented to the school? Well, suppose you
listen right now. We've got the thing going full blast in the study hall.
and so, my friends, little red riding hood ate the wolf for
breakfast next morning on top of her bowl of finger-waved fodder.- This is
station S. H. S. The time is exactly fifteen years, 45 days, past 1940. The
program that you just heard came to you through the courtesy of Boney's
Beargrease. Remember only one smear of Beargrease is positively guaranteed
to make your head bare or greasy instantly. See your yokel dealer about our
new Indian Scalp Treatment. You're sure to find a hair raising experience.
And now we present Miss Mary Woodford Kidwell of Newsy Viewsys of the day.
Good evening folks, we have just received the latest European war news
from our correspondent Allan Cwartrite, who is in Russia. He says nothing much
is happening over there, Hitler won the checker-poker game last night but
Chamberlain says that it -can't happen again.
Mr. Owen Hudson of Pumpkin Center, Arkansas, has just invented a new
type of notebook backs. He has been working on this idea since 1940 and
firmly declares that the new product can be sold to school children for only 3V2
cents.
The championship fight between Ferocious Foreman and Lasley the Lug
will take place in New York next Thursd-ay night. It is expected to be a great
battle, as the two men are mortal enemies.
The cream of society was entertained last night at a very new and swanky
party given by the millionwaire Sam Lasley and his wife, in honor of Miss Betty
Rlhea Lee. Miss Lee has just recently returned from France.
The famous clothing designer Q. M. Ritchie has just resigned her job in
New York to help Delmer Schafer of Hollywood film a new picture starring the
Spanish comedian, El Corky del Kirkwood.
Detective Lewis Higginbottom of Cincinnatti has just captured the gang
that held up the Cleavingers' Bank. He received the reward offered for Percy
the Punk.
The only change in the weather is that the sun will rise a bit later
tomorrow. tIt's Sunday, you know.l
Meanwhile stop in at your druggists for a bottle of Boney's Beargrease.
Remember toupee or no toupee- that's the question.

JUNIORS
After one of the severest initiations ever known to the fish of Stratford
High, we became official members of high school. Remember the raw liver
given to you as a scab sandwich, that "shocking" that made you nearly bend
doubleg the boys will probably never forget the belt line, and how the girls
cheerfully ate onions all day. Remember how many dozen shoes you polished
or how horrible you looked? And that stinking gas which no one but the fish
could stand to smell- We stood it because we lrad to. How could we ever forget
it all? Mr. Tabor was our sponsor that year, and We all had fun.
The sophomore year Wasn't too eventful, but there was enough to keep us
good and busy.
And now we come to this ye-ar. We got a good start and have had a good
time and the near future holds many promises for more. Our play, "Here Comes
Charlie," was presented November 17. Forward, march! And We see a spring
activity which will call for Work, but it will be a great deal of fun too- that'S
our Junior-Senior banquet and Prom. A prom is something new here, so each
and every one is hoping our plans work out.
The juniors seldom glance back because we are thinking of the future and
what it holds for us, but here are statistics from the beginning. We started in
1930 with fifty-two classmates. Only seven of the original fifty-two remain.
Our class now has the membership of twenty-eight.
Watch for us next year because We're headed for big things as the seniors
of 1941.

JUNIOR BANQUET
Banquets are just naturally a gran-d affair, but this one of 1940 is an extra
special. The scheme is "The Little Red School House" and everything is cleverly
arranged. Don't we all look sweet in the dunce caps? It brings back old
memories. Goodness, there's so many juniors and seniors this year. However
the juniors outnumbered the seniors two to one. Notice we said juniors two to
one instead of "Lucky Stripes." The attendance is nearly sixty. The girls all
look lovely in their evening dresses, and thinking of it, the boys are rather
handsome, too. Perhaps we had forgotten to tell you, but our toastmaster is
Miss Jo Bryan. This food tastes good, too, but we must not eat too much or
there will be a lot of making sashes and belts larger. Things are rolling along
just "swell." We know this banquet will be rehearsed in our memories many
times. Yes, we are certainly building mountains of memories around the
Junior-Senior Banquet of 1940.
JUNIOR PLAY
On November 17, 1939 A. D., the Juniors of 1939-40 presented one super
colossal play- "Here Comes Charlie." The plot concerned Larry, a young man,
whose house was controlled by his aunt, Mrs. Farnham, and who adopted a
hill-billy orphan wfho -he thought was a boy, but turned out to be a girl.
From this situation there developed many laughs. The characters were
as follows:
Larry Elliott, the young man- Pat Haynes.
Ted Hartly, Larry's college ehum- Virgil Garoutte.
Mrs. Farnham, Larry's aunt- Dale Mullins.
Charlie Hofpps, Larry's ward- Jo Bryan.
Uncle Twiggs, Charlie's guardian- Leon Guthrie.
Vivian Smythe-Kersey, Larry's fiancee- Peggy Whetstone.
Mrs. Smythe-Kersey, V1vian's mother- Nettle Beth Everett.
Mortimer Smythe-Kersey, Vivian's brother- Gene Harrison.
Nona Malone, housekeeper- Joyce Ann Blllington.
Tim McGrill, Nora's sweetheart- Travis Blevins.

FRESHMAN HISTORY
Yes, yes, don't rush me, for we'll soon get to you. Well, here We are.
Green, slimy fish. Don't you d-are insult us. But, now, all kidding aside, we
are here to tell our short history.
The fish that were first graders, and have had the courage to come this far
are Pauline Keener, Jewel Rita Cowdrey, Rosalie McDaniel, Donald Ritchie,
Lloyd McDaniel, Leoti Turner, Virgil Ghisum, Tommy Jo Grimes, Billy Jo Ross,
and Arthur Lee Ross. Thirteen old pioneers. Give them a hand, folks.
Well, now, just think, soon We will be telling other fish what to do! Oh, I
just remembered, initiation is just around the corner. Please, upper classmen,
don't forget the New Year resolutions that day. We'1l be seeing you. Mean-
wlhile, we will be making more history.

the end of the year. Well, We raised nearly a hundred dollars, and We only
spent close to fifty on that first trip. We took a trip to Red River, New Mexico,
in the truck of Mr. Allen. We hlad more fun than you can imagine anyone
having. The second year, We took Mr. Veazey and Mr. Allen Bryant with us.
Everyone thought that they were girls, too, but you need not tell them We said so.
This year, we are attempting to raise enough money to go again. The club
officers are Margaret Ritchie, Presidentg Selma Mullins, Vice Presidentg Dale
Mullins, Secretaryg Betty Rhea Lee, Treasurer, Mary Woodford Ki-dwell, Reporter.
So until we meet again, adieu.

there Was a very nare one. CThat is, no one could even begin to sing until Mrs.
Flores taught us howl. There are about twenty-five members in the Glee Club
and we have learned several songs throughout the year. We sang at the recital
that was given for the talents of the musical students of Mrs. Flores. The

PEP SQUAD
The pep squad for 1939 and 1940 was a screaming, yelling, jumping bunch of
high school and grade school students who rooted for our football boys at almost
every game. We yelled for our team and even got tackled a time or two.
Remember Goodwell?
Our efficient pep leaders were Mary Woodford Kidwell, Verne Foreman,
Betty Rhea Lee, Russel Bloney, and Marvin Patterson. 'Iihe pep squad itself,
however, can't be described except that it consisted of nearly all the high school
girls and a number of boys. Orur sponsor was Miss Gidden. Officers of the
squad were Jimmie Lee Landrum, President, Peggy Whetstone, Vice President,
Bobby Wiginton, Reporter.
