Foreword
Our school, to be truly ours, must be loved and remembered
by each and every one of its children. With this thought in
mind, we, the annual staff, have strived to put into this book
the memorable happenings of the school year 1953-1954. We
have also attemped to capture the enthusiasm, the love and
the respect we have for our school and those whose duty it
is to guide us. It islour hope that in later years these few
pages will help to recall to you the smiles and tears---all
the images of well known places and events at Stockton R-1
High School.

Sembr Class Hi 0 y
I am a Tiger. No, I'm not an ordinary Tiger that lives in a Jungle. I am the proud em-
blem of the Stockton High School. I atn strong and brave.
I have one group of students I am especially proud of. They are the SENIOR CLASS.
I was first introduced to them on September 5, 1950. There were '70 of them, all fresh-
men. They were timid at first but soon, under the wise supervision of their wonderful sponsors,
Mr. Bowen and Mrs. Cowan, they became organized.
I watched as they carefully selected their officers: Shirley Dawes, Presidentg Gladys Earnest,
Vice President, Max Oldham, Secretary, and Alfred Marcum, Treasurer.
In a few weeks I could look over my campus and watch them come to the top of every
activity with flying colors, backing me all the way.
Then came the school carnival. They proudly presented their choice of candidates for
Prince Charming and Queen: Bob Morgan and Shirley Sparks. By much hard work they received
third place. This gave them high hopes for the coming years.
In the fall of 1951, I watched them come back to school as sophomores. They knew all
about school this year. I looked on with their sponsors, Mr. Bowen and Mr. Norman, as they
elected Joan Sanford, President, Max Oldham, Vice President, Gladys Earnest, Secretary, Rex
Church, Treasurer, Bill Chastain, Reporterg and Mike Smith, Sergeant-at-Arms.
Their carnival candidates for Queen and Prince Charming were Gladys Earnest and Bill
Chastain.' Max Oldham was made king of the KEY.
when the annual Homecoming arrived, Helen Jean Cacy, a cute member of their class,
was made attendant to the Queen.
As this class came back in the fall of 1952, they walked with high heads. Now they were
upper classmen. It made me raise my head with pride, too. The faculty gave them three active
and wonderful sponsors, Mrs. Weir, Miss Billingsly, and Mr. Norman. Under their leadership
the class accomplished many things. The elected officers for that year were Alfred Marcum,
President, Frank Smith, Vice Presidentg Max Oldham, Secretary, Maurine Hall, Reporterg Joan
Sanford, Treasurer: Bill Chastain, Song Leader and Gary Wynes, Sergeant-at-Arms.
You should have seen all of the happy faces when the class rings came and they hurried to
open the little packages and then placed them on their fingers.
They were very proud when Shirley Dawes was crowned Queen of Homecoming in 1952.
Ot O tober 30 ll5J under the direction of Mrs Nelson they proudly presented their
Junior Plav 'IAKE YOUR MEDICINE I had a reserved seat on the front row I saw and
heard it all and enjoyed every moment of it
In the spring they gave an elaborate banquet for the seniors When they entered the door
I hardly knew the m Everyone looked like ktngs and queens and after all they had a right to
for the banquet theme was IHE CORONAIION Everyone had fun at the prom alter the ban
quet I watched them dance from the side lines Tigers aren t supposed to dance 1 enjoyed
the musit played by the dance band anyway
'lheir senior year was begun with the election of class officers They were Max Oldham
President Helen Jean Cacy Vice President Ruth Young Secretary Cladys Earnest lrcasurer
Charles Collins Reporter and Frank Smith and Darlene Sitton Sergents at Arms
Miss Oldham and Mr Weir were their sponsors
It was a pleasure to see the beam of pride on their faces when Ioan Sanford a very lovely
member ot their tlass was crowned Queen of Homecoming
Prince Charming and they boomed in with first plaeel
Then came the Senior pictures Ihad fun watching them pose for that just right look
,lust before Christmas the student body chose the Key Royalty to reign over the 1953 1954
Annual Miss Shirley Sparks was crowned AnnualQueen byCharlesCollins at an all school party
given by the -lnnual Staff We were very proud of these fine senior students
Iwas serv mtieh pleased in the spring when I attended their senior play NO MORE
HOMEWORK Under Mrs Nelson s direetion they made it a sensation and everyone enjoyed it
As their pride and joy of the year they printed the KEY, the yearbook The annual staff
that brought forth this wonderful book at which you are now looking were Joan Sanford Editor
Helen Cacx Assistant Editor Bob Morgan Business Manager Shirley Dawes Social Editor
Maurire Hall and Ruth Young Publicity Editors Dorothy Young Literary Editor Doris Cotton
Class Editor Rex Church Advertising Sales Minnie Mae Clark Yearbook Sales Gladys Earnest
and Charles Collins -lrt Editors and Max Oldham Sports Editor with the help and direction of
the wonderful annual staff sponsors Mrs Griffin and Miss Hoff
On May 1954 I sat in the audience and watehed as they came down the aisle 1n their
blue eaps and gowns to receive their diplomas All though they didn t cry I knew that they felt
very sad to be leaving Stockton High School I felt the tears roll down my cheeks as they walk

They were no longer high school students they were citizens of the nation lhave sent
them o.tt in the world to be the future leaders of Amertca and I will be proud when I read their
titles in the papers of the nation
