I was released from the hosprtal the next day and decrded to spend the nrght at a local hotel Upon enterrng the lobby I was met by a sprrghtly bcllboy who took my bags and escorted me to my room As I placed a trp rn hrs hand I realrzed that rt was J E Rams' On my way back to the shrp I happened to walk past the bus depot and met Wanda Fowler who was on her way to Cuba to be wrth her husband Pearson Jones Two peaceful days of sarlrng followed but then we began to run low on fresh water so we dropped anchor and I went rn to see what I could get Three lrttle chrldren were playrng on the shore I asked the oldest boy what hrs name was and he sard that rt was Leon after hrs father Roy Leon Robrson Yes Roy and Audrey Jones had marrred and were lrvrn on the farm They readrly agreed to let us take water from therr well and Roy rnsrsted that we all go frshrng wrth rm and Leon Srnce we had no equrpment Roy took us to the Woody Fly and Frshrng Rod Company Much to my surprrse Ifound that the owner was my old classmate Brll Woody Brll told me that he had started to college had fallen madly rn love had gotten marrred and was now lrvrng on flres We returned to the shrp and began to watch our navrgatron because we thought that we were rn the Prrate Cove re gron But the next day we looked up to see the Golden Gate Brrdge of San Francrsco strarght ahead' Blamrng the frrst mate for not carryrng out my orders I decrded to go ashore and see some of the srghts Everyone seemed to be gorng rn the same drrectron and I drscovered that the teams of two great unrversrtres were gorng to play football I rushed to the stadrum and ot a seat on the frfty yard lrne As the teams came runnrng out on the freld I recognrzed a famrlrar face It was Harry dams but I couldn t tell whether he was a coach or a water boy Lookmg around me at half trme, I found that I was srttrng next to Sam Adams He rnformed me that he was now playrng pro basketball was rnarrred and had a lrttle basketball player about three years old After the game I ran rnto Henry Addrson who was servrng rn the Arr Force He was not by hrmself though Oh no Dorothy was there, too' Henry sard that he lacked only a year and then he would be gorng back to Stockton Brddrng them farewell I dropped rnto a nearby rnsurance offrce to drscuss the lrfe rnsurance I rntended to buy when I found the treasure The salesman was not rn but I talked to hrs attractrve secretary and soon realrzed that she was Bonnell Barton Just as sweet as ever Havrng heard so much about Hollywood I decrded to pay a vrstt there too I sent a message to my shrp to meet me at San Drefgo rn aweek, and I took a southbound bus for Los Angeles As we drove along I kept thrnkrng I recognrzed the drrver an at the next stop I drscovered that he was Elvrn Barton I-Ie rnformed me that Don Routh was drrvrng a bus on another route for the same company As I got off rn L A I ran rnto Kyle Bough who was on hrs way to San Francrsco where he was servrng rn the navy and playrng on a navy basketball team Kyle told me that he frequently saw Jeanette Cantlon Adams who was lrvrng rn San Francrsco and spendrng most of her trme takrng care of Gene Junror sfgff A .. ......... 2-3 . -. Roscoe told me that he was lrvrng by hrmself and prckrng frurt He also told me not to tell anyone but that he was plannrng to get marrred soon Inow began lookrng for some form of entertarnment for the evenrng As I passed a large audrtorrum I notrced on the brllboard the face of Donna Carender Hammons who was brlled as a great educator and chrld psycholo rst 1 walked up to the box offrce and to my surprrse I found that Jean Pyle was sellrng trckets She explarned that s e wa Donna s busrness manager and accompanred her on all her lecture tours When I got rnsrde I began lookrng around to see rfI could frnd anyone I knew Three rows behrnd me I caught a glrmpse of Wanda Brown Srtton who told me that she had marrred shortly after graduatron and that she and her husband were now rn the automobrle busrness rn Long Beach I then notrced that thrs evenrng s performance was a benefrt for unprrvrleged chrldren and that there were to be several rntermrssron acts The frrst thrng to appear on the stage was a very funny clown who was brlled as Krauss the Great At frrst I couldn t place the vorce but suddenly rt dawned on me that rt was Charles Krauss I read more about hrm rn the paper later and learned that he was one of Barnum and Barley s funnrest and most popular clowms The next thrng to appear was a grrls quartet whrch specralrzed rn the srngrng of chrldren s songs and was made up of Joyce Trndle Rosalre Montgomery Garl Prnkman and Georgra Hughes After the lecture I found that hotel rooms were very scarce I frnally resorted to an apartment hotel and was very surprrsed to frnd that Ralph Elton Clayton was the owner of the entrre burldrng Ralph explarned to me that all he had tc do was srt back and let the money roll rn From htm I learned that C W Felty was now runnrng a hatchery rn Green freld Mrssourr I also learned that two more of our old frrends Kenneth Jones and Ralph Johnson were now the prout owners of a turkey farm rn Washrn ton State and that Carl West was one of therr employees It seemed that Kennet had marrred Roberta Sortors but t at Ralph was spendrng most of hrs money on cars I told Ralph Elton the next momrng that I must be takrng the tram to San Drego but he rnsrsted that I let hrs chauf feur drrve me there rn hrs lrmousrne As we dashed from one srde of the road to the other at a srckenrng speed I caught a gllmpse of the drrver s face and realrzed that rt was Wrlbur Fox I drdn t dare say anythrng then but when we stopped at a frllmg statron I learned from Wrlbur that he and Vance Turner had come west together to make therr fortunes but that Vance was now rarsrng cattle rn Wyomrng on a ranch owned by Anna Lee Hoerrng Spangler and her husband As we were clrmbrng back rnto the car a snappy statron wagon drove up wrth Coffman Cowan Ranch wrrtten on the srde and out Jumped Mary Frances Gelsrn er She rnformed me that she and Drxre Roy just couldn t get along wrth out each other so they had persuaded therr hus ands to go rnto busrness together But I could tell that the poor boys drdnl have much to say about the runnrng of the ranch As we resumed our trrp at a moderate 95 m p h I heard a shrrekrng srren and looked around expectrng a polrcf car Instead I sawa brrght red ambulance wrth Wrrght s Ready Ambulance Servrce prrnted on the srde Icouldn'l recognrze the drrver but I am posrtrve that the person on the rrght srde was Carol Steely It drdn t take us long to outdrstance them, and soon we were rn San Drego I had Wrlbur drop me at thewaterfront and began lookrng for my shrp It drdn t seem to be rn srght so I began rnqurrrng to see rf anyone knew of IIS where abouts I dropped rnto a sportrng goods store and found that rt was owned and managed by Donald Rrchardson and Leroy Sullrvan They rnformed me that they owned a charn of them and that among therr branch managers were two more 0 my old frrends, Dwarne Fox and Ruth Krrschel As for my shrp they sard they knew nothrng of rt so I departed some what dovmcast Next I wandered rnto a large department store and was met by an attractrve sales person whom I soon recognrzed a Beulah Wallen Beulah rnformed me that Wanda Hutson was modelrng clothes rn the fashron department of the same store I also learned from Beulah that Shrrley Srmmons was playrng baseball wrth a women s professronal team and that Gordor Grey was runnrng a grocery store rn Ierrco Sprrngs Mrssourr 7 . . . . . r ' - ' , . . . . , . . . , ' , . I suppose rt does seem strange to start to read a class htstory and the frrst words that confront you are I am a notebook But l m not just any ordrnary notebook I have just been through four of the most unusual excrtrng, and wonderful years that ever exrsted For you see I belong to a senror of the class of 1953 Nowl know I m not makrng myself very clear so I ll start at the be grnmng About the frrst thrng I can remember rsberng carrred one brrght fall momtng by a very exctted and nervous fresh man who was Just entermg Stockton I-hgh School What a trme I had' That frrst year I was treated so carefully All of the math Englrsh ctvrcs and other subjects that freshmen have to take were put between mv covers so neatly I saw many thrngs that year but that was just rt I SAW them and drd not partrcrpate rn many of them Of course, there was the school carmval rn whtch Jean Pyle and Davrd Haralson represented the freshman class and lrttle excrtrng thrngs lrke class partres and extra currrcular acttvrtres but nothrng brg Then came a nrce much needed rest And rn the fall ofl950 I came back to school but thrs trme the hands that held me were steady and very sure of themselves Yes, they were the hands of a sophomore and not those of a lowly freshman There were lots of thrngs that year The camrval came and went agarn wrth Patty Harrrs and l-larry Adams as candrdates rn Englrsh class a school paper was started and at the end of the year there was a short play presented to the student body Yes rt was an excrtrng year and there were even several sophomores who went out for the new sport rn our school football By thrs trme Iwas geetrng pretty worn but I just had to hold myself together for by the fall of 1951 Iwas owned by a Junror Oh that was a wonderful year So many excrtrng thmgs happened Frrst there was a play between my covers The name of tt was One Wrld Nrght It was a wonderful play and what fun we had produclng rt Then the hands that carrred me had on somethrng new Yes rt was a class rrng and rt was truly the most beautrful ever Soon there began to be plans between my covers for a Junror senror banquet Now talk about a banquet that was really one' The theme was Lavender and Old Lace and the Junrors entertarned the semors rn STYLE Then ftnally I was owned by a semor How drgnifred I felt and so many thrngs happened that year There were caps and gowns to order, an armual to publrsh announcements and name cards to decrde on and f1nal'ly that wonderful senror trrp The senror play was Ghost Wanted, and what a play tt was Then at last came baccalaureate and commencement and I was put asrde for a much needed rest Yes, these four years have truly been wonderful ones They w1ll always be remembered and cherrshed by each member of the 1953 semor class And as for me I wtll probably be lard rn some dusty corner of the attrc a relrc of the past But now that you have heard my story perhaps you won t thmk rt so strange after all for me to be tellrng rt be cause you see I am very well qualtfred to tell rt I Just an old notebook of a semor of the class of 1953 .
