in preparation for the Class reunion to be
held in May, Mr. Schiffman and Mr. Johnson

With the first signs of Spring in March and April, the
teachers went all out w.th their annual Faculty Follies.
Track records were broken at Sl-lS, One of the exciting

Highlights of the School Year 1953-1954
' ARMISTICE DAY, MEMORIAL DAY, AND CHRISTMAS AS-
SEMBIES, produced by Miss Marian Mellgren, who also "guides" the
regular student body assemblies which numbered more than 25 in
i953-4,
0 CHRISTMAS WEEK lDecember l4-l8l, which traditionally in-
cludes caroling in the halls by Mr. McCarthy's chorus classes, decor-
ating the large Christmas tree in the Main Building entrance hall by
Mrs. Helen Mowatt's Junior Red Cross members, and several class
and club parties held in the bungalow and classrooms just before two
weeks' vacation.
0 THE FUN FEST lMay 73, when all Stockton High puts on a
festive air and funny hats and clothes are seen everywhere. The
carnival spirit was shown by the large crowds who spent three after-
noon hours patronizing the 47 attractively decorated booths, watch-
ing the crowning of Fun Fest King Gary Lambert and Queen Toni
Pricola, or dancing to the iuke box in the girls' gym at the GAA-
Block S Sock Hop,
0 GRADUATION NIGHT lJune ill, is the most important of all to
tenth graders, As they walk dawn the aisles of the auditorium that
evening to receive their diplomas they will be mindful of their four
years at SHS, which end in ceremony that night, Recollections of the
Splash at Oak Park, May 28 and the graduation dance in the boys'
gym June 4 are just two of their many memories.
C PLAYS
Produced by the Drama Workshop, under the direction of Mr.
Gene McCabe, three plays were presented to Stockton High aud-
iences in A6, the Little Theatre, during l9S3-4.
l. "The lmportance of Being Earnest," with Bill Jones, Bill England,
Sharon Blanchard, Diana Lillie, Allen Gomes, Sonda Smith, Debbie
Goleman, Roy Hoggard and Jay Malloy, on the nights of December
8, 9, lO.
2. "The Bat," with Bill Jones, Nadine Graham, Jamie Crawford, Low-
ell Bagos, Cora Burns, David White, Kenny Martin, Annette Newell,
Allen Gomes, and Larry Swarthout, on the nights of April 6, 7, 8.
3. "Twelfth Night," with Bill Jones, Bill England, Allen Gomes, Tris
Celayetta, Kay Harris, Bob Ferrell, Bob Howell, Larry Lacey, Wayne
Nerland, Ronny Dennis, Charles Jorgenson, Paul Giavanetti, John
Stoker, Richard Limbaugh, David Charles, and eleven others, on the
nights of June lst and 2nd,
UART
Northern California Scholastic Art Contest winners included Den-
nis Natali and Jimmie White, gold keys, Maureen Soren and Vernon
Washington, two certificates of merit. Seventeen other SHS students
won certificates of merit, Other highlights of the art program at
Stockton High have been the exhibits of Public Schools Week seen
by large groups of visitors Open House Night, April 27, and displays
in the halls and classrooms at Christmas time and similar important
occasions. Designing the sets for the Christmas assembly and other
important assemblies, as well as the operetta, "Pirates of Penzance"
were other art projects. Miss Polly Price, Mr. Curtis Draper, Mr.
Joseph Bragdon and Miss Karma Hill are SHS art teachers,
OMUSIC
The Twenty-fourth Annual SHS Band, Orchestra, and Choir Con-
cert, held in the auditorium the evening of April 9, featured the
works of Haydn, Bizet, Wagner, Bach, Tschaikowsky, and others of
the musically great, No soloists were featured, but each organization
emphasized individual merit as a means of achieving group harmony,
"The Pirates of Penzance," A Cappella Choir's production of
Gilbert C1 Sullivan's light opera, took the stage of the auditorium at
the March 4 assembly. ln the leading roles were Earl Moreno, Richard
Harisay, Lila Cook, Barbara Heston, Bessie Erickson, Colene Jordan,
Richard Santos, Tom Smith, Sharon Brown, and Marcia Sider, Mr
John Lindley McCarthy directed.
Superior ratings were awarded to the SHS Orchestra and Band
at the Northern California Music Festival at San Francisco State
College, held May 8, The Blue and White's orchestra acauired the
only superior rating given to an entire ensemble at the festival, and
superior ratings were made to the following individualsi cello, Helene
Laird and Beverly Rodgers, violin, Charles Johnson, violin-cello-piano
trio: Claire Farey, violin, Bridger Mitchell, cello, and Charles John-
son, piano. The Tarzans' Band achieved superior ratings for its
trumpet trio: Bob Andres, Robert Hull, and Keith Sheldon, its clari-
net duet, Ralph Loomis and Barbara Gill, and the woodwind trio:
Barbara Gill, flute, Marilyn Burgess, oboe, and Jean Reyburn, clari-
net.
Band, Orchestra, and A Cappella Choir took part in the musical
part of the Armistice and Memorial Day assemblies, the Christmas
assembly, and the graduation exercises,
ODANCES
Ninth and tenth grade dances were held at Native Sons' Hall
from 8 to ll pm Exceptions were the last two 9-lO dances, held
at the same hours in the boys' gym, Mr, Charles Schiffman, Mrs.
Ruth West, and Miss Edna Rinset's classes were hosts.
