our science teacher and Miss Andermann, our reliable class advisor.
After becoming more and more acquainted with the school and its

rapidly, too rapidly to suit us because we were just heginning to
have some fun.
After our short and glorious freshmen year we came back
the following year as a mighty Sophomore class which in all num-
bered eleven, as two dropped out. Harold Rullerman dropped out
during tl1e summer vacation. Frank Giertz after an absence of two
years enlisted to the school department as a Sophomore. The officers
for the year were lVanda Nlave Young, president: Donald Bridges,
vice presidentg Fred Bit-seeker, secretary and treasurer, and Ken-
neth Rineker, news reporter. The elass was proud to have four of its
hoys as first team haskethall players. During the second semester
Imogene M anion moved to Vtfindsor.
And here we are again hut we stepped up one more st-ep as a
very small Junior Class hut the smartest' in school. Our officers for
the year are as follows: Frank Giertz, president: Allen Rankin,
viee president: Jimmie York, secretaryg Junior Rridges,
treasurer, and .Donald Bridges, news reporter. The rest are 'Wanda
Ntaye Young, Ruth Martin, Fred Rieseeker, lfenneth Rineker, and
Harold Nippe. VW- are again proud to mention that liineker, Rankin,
Riesecker, and Giertz almost make up the first team in hasketball.
The class play "Among The Starsf' was presented and went off
with a hang. W'e all hated to lose Jeanette hut she quit after school
got underway.

SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY
Kenny Rineker ran breathlessly into the San Francisco Airport.
"Stop that plane," he yelled. Realizing that his efforts were in vain,
he sat down on his grip and 111ll1'Illl1I'UCl, "Curses, shels gone again.
And her red hair would just match my snappy little tractor, Oh, ll
never could understand women, H he moaned. Just then another plane
elaine in, and a group of beautiful girls slepped out followed by a
well-tlressecl young' man. Recognizing his oltl frienfl Don Bridges,
Kenny marched boldly up to him and yellecl, "Hi olcl top, how're

" Fine, my boy," b-eamecl our own Ziegfiehl ll eutliusiastieallj..
"These five bathing beauties are the results of a world-wide Search

proposed to the winner, but they always turn me alownff
"You and me both,,' sulked Kenny. "Not five minutes ago my
little recllieatl got away. But say, where's the rest of the S. H. S.
gaiig? "Babe" Giertz is busily engaged i11 the hog' raising' business
with Edwin Rineker. How about the rest?"
"Uh, I saw Allen Rankin the other day when my plane lost its

Allen says he has saved the souls ol' SHG lflthiopiaus. Say. how about

JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY
Toot, toot, the whistle blew on the last part ot' August 1938 and
the chu-chu pulled away with 28 starey eyed, green Freshmen, hoping
to gain some day enough knowledge to become faxnons. Vile hadn't
traveled many days until we landed at Initiation Station filled with
thrills and spills. Oh what next e?-Just as we expected the engire stai-
led at Semester Exam Post. lt was certainly a terrible adventure be-
cause here we lost Virgil Paulson, lflldo Tate, .lean Martin, and
August Von Bhren but rescued a fellow student, Maxine Manion. Ou
our trip Stiehna Volkman was the conductor, .l uanita Young. viee eon-
ductor, Geraldine Kearney note and money keeper and Joyce Reel
reporter.
The next year we found ourselves on Foot leaving our stalhil
engine behind. XVe were trying' hard to see what the world was like.
Evidently Morris Hrehmer, Madge Allen and Henry lVildersheim
don't like to walk because they are no where to be seen but who is
that flaming' red head? lt must be Flora Belle lVood. This year
Howard Kramer took over Gene Kull 's leadership 'while Dwight
Osternleier stood by seeing that Juanita Young was a good secretary,
Curtis Nippe took care of the money and Stuart lluwe sent all 'lap-
penings to the news paper, kVe again ran into Semester Exam Post
but waded right through. Soni-e how' in the excitement we lost sight
of Geraldine Kearney and Carl Shelton, VW- have prospered so much
if we keep on nothing will stop us.
Wlmf? 1940 already and we are still walking' but Flora Pelle
YVood, Bill Thomas, Dale Vanderpool, Maxine Manion and Howard
Kramer are no longer with us.
The amount of knowledge gained and sights seen in the past
three years is unspeakable. VVe are glad to be under the eonduet of
Dwight Osternieier and his helper .loyee Reel, while Juanita Doeding'
takes eare to be a good secretary and Juanita- Young' an :ietive news
reporter. NVe are hoping' the Seniors like the banquet we are plan--
ningt Next year we hope to enter riding' in an automobile more re-
fined and dignified.
Bye, bye.

SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY
011 September 4, 1939 twenty-one Freslnnen startled out from
S. H. S. Lodge upon the hike of wisdom. As head guide 'lQaw1'e1n'e
Biehler was elected, Sally VVilson vice-president, Grace Tate, sec-
retary, Mervin Ruff, treasurer, and Marvin Ulmer news reporter.
Two weeks later, we took a canoe ride ending in a spill in the lake
from which our upper classmates rescued us at our initiation. Wie.
passed all six weeks tests as if they were poison ivy, but when the
hlaek cloud of semester exams hung over us we were sure soaked
with questions, of course. At Christmas, Harold and Glarold Kearnev
got wet feet a11d sore throats and left us. The rest were faithful and
journeyed on until we heard the welcome words as vacation came,
'tYou're excused.
77
Once more after we had regained our lm-atli and were ealined
down, we started out on our hike, but we changed from canoes to
boats to aeeoniodate us great Sophoniores. Uur old hikers Bolt Man-
ion, Letha Mae Storm, Gail Keller, and Ruth Cox must have got ten
the stay-at-home fever, for they didn't come hack. Gail Keller is new
happily married and settled down. Lawrence Biehler was unanimous-
ly 4-leeted head guide again with Betty Kull vice president, Mervin
Ruff secretary-treasurer, and lllarvin lllnier news reporter. XVe had
too ntueh fun the first six weeks and not enough hard liiking, so the
exams didn 't go so well. Then did we hlaze a trail? where to you want
to know? Why right up to t.he dark forest of semester tests. hut smite-
how the little soplioniores came through on the lirigllt and sunny :aide
with flying colors. That 's us! We 're not througrh hiking' yet, but you
can he sure we're well on our way with a ttnot half had' start.

MAGAZINE SAL E
The magazine sale carried on for ten days was an interesting
race in gold and blue planes carrying the working students across
tl1c country. The golds won under their leader, Juanita Young, by
covering more space and gathering more material and Marvin Ulmer
with the occupants of the blue planes flew in late but came out to
congratulate the others on their tine work with a grand all-seheol
party. Fun? Extra special. The money raised in this campaign help-
ed to pay for our gym mats.
SEASON T It 'KET SA LE
Early in tl1e fall to start aetiyities rolling and get everyone ready
for our 40-4l basketball season we were all impatiently awaiting, the
student body divided into Four groups to sell season tickets and let
known to Strasburg what a grand time would be spent tliroughout
the winter in the new gym watching our boys play basketball. "See
them and help them win" was the slogan as Baba Giertz with Marvin
lilllltll' as helper, Fred Rieseeker with Shorty l-luwe as helper, Miranda
Mayo Young with Ruth lVilson assisting, and Joyce Reel with .lane
Hood assisting, released their groups with encouragement and ad-
vice to work hard and wing for an agreement had been made thai the
two losing sides give tl1e winners a party. What! Babe and Fred,
those great basketball stars let Joyce and lVanda M aye win? M ayl.e
the girls were better talkers, anyway with their groups they enjoyed
the big party in their honor.
ETELD TRIPS
What's school without field trips! .X pleasant educational ehange
is quite welcome. lndeed the trip to Springfield taken by the Junior--
Senior American History class was really fun. The students eouldn't.
wait until April or May so we ehaneed a day in March for
the great event and the weather was in our tayor. lVe left early and
ealne home late. Some ot' the interesting plaees we visited were
lJincol,n's home and tomb, the state capitol, museum, Supreme Court,
airport, radio station, and newspaper plant. The Freslnnan-Soirho-
more girls couldn't let this trip pass without something to do, so
March 29. they, with Miss Andermann and the boys' Home Ee. Class
went to Mattoon to visit the bakery, packing house, and the Meadow
Gold Dairy. Many educational things were heard and seen. Earlier
this class had visited the lValgreen Condensery at Shelbyville.

CARNIVAL
Bigger and Better is probably a worn out advertising statement,
but please permit us to apply it to our 1941 Carnival because it
describes it quite well. Anyone attending will surely agree. This
great activity was sponsored by the Student Council to help pay foi
our gym mats. The evening ot' March ll, was cool but grand and a
large crowd gathered in the gym, filled with things to do and see.
Cake walks, tumbling, boxing and wrestling acts, bingo, dart throw-
ing, horseshoe, penny tossing, basketball shooting, fortune telling,
all took plaee and no one forgot the refreshment stand, fruit basket
drawing, dramatic play and crowning of the most popular boy in
high school, Elmer Fields. The sound of musie and balloons with the
delicious smell of refreshments put everyone into a earnival spirit
and kept the evening alive.
CLASS TOURNA M ENT
March 4, completed the basketball games and determined the
winning class in the S. H. S. You guessed it! The Seniors won witli
all those star players, but the Juniors really stayed up with th-em
in the first part of the championship game. Every 1-lass was red and
white or white and red, but the bleechers were filled with rooters
and an interesting audience. The following schedule had bf-en made
weeks before:
Game l. Juniors vs. Freshmen
Game 2. Sophonioras vs. Seniors
Game 3. lVinners of games 1 and 2
Ol' eourse, every class was evpeeting to win but sinee onlv one could.
we handed it over to the Seniors. ll was fun and eongratulations
Seniors for the good work!
J l'XlUlt-SICNIUR HA NQ U ICT
ll is possible for boys and girls to grow up. Al least the Juniors
and Seniors put on their best manners and passed as ladies and gen-
tlemen at their banquet April 18th. The evening had been patiently
awaited and long looked forward to and really passed quite fast. 'lfhe
classes and the teachers with their guests went to the St. Nicholas
Hotel in Decatur to enjoy the evening meal. After this every-nie at-
tended a theater party. Though a late return was anticipated and
earried out everyone reported a good time.
