Your Personnel Director is cordially invited to visit the College. Address all inquiries to: NICHOL H. MEMORY, Stevens Alumni Association, 527 River St., Hoboken, N. I. 2 PREFACE BY THE EDITORS THIS booklet has been prepared to introduce the mem- bers of the Class of l94O of Stevens Institute of Technology to men in business and industry who may presently, we hope, become our employers. Stevens graduates have been going forth into the industrial and engineering world for the past sixty-seven years, and they have established an excellent record for the College. The Class of l94O is fully determined to be worthy of this record, With faith in the institution in which our training has been obtained, the members of the Class are prepared to build upon that training in years to come. The Class hopes that the employers to whom these words and this booklet are addressed will find among its members men well-fitted for the positions to be filled. On behalf of the Class, the editors wish to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Nichol H. Memory, Secretary of the Alumni Association, for his assistance and co- operation in the preparation of this book. THE SENIOR BOOKLET COMMITTEE of the Class of I94O ROBERT C. STURKEN, Chairman ALLEN BERNSTEIN HERBERT A. CUMMING WILLIAM B. DAVIS GERALD H. C-OERTZEL IOHN I. WIRTH 3 4 FOREWORD By DR, HARVEY N. DAVIS President of Stevens Institute of Technology EACH man portraycd in thIs booklet is well on his way toward a Stevens degree in june, I94O. He will then have completed a curriculum in general engineering, stressing the fundamentals, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, mechanics and thermodynamics and he will have had an elementary training in each of the four major branches of engineering, and in the economics of engineering. ln addition, through a technical elective, he will have penetrated slightly further into some field of his choice. No one of these men is yet a specialist in any branch of engineering, but every one of them is ready to specialize on the job, to become, through hard work and self-education, a competent engineer or busi- ness man as the case may be, and to render loyal and efficient service. Many of them are destined for notable careers in the years to come, in the development of which the wise guidance and friendly encouragement of their future employers will play a large part. I bespeak for each of them the opportunity that he deserves. HARVEY N. DAVIS 4 THE COURSE OF INSTRUCTION ESEARCI-l, Design, Development, Production, Sales, Installation and Maintenance are the divisions of industry in which fledgling engineers are needed. After years of experience in these fields the responsibilities of management naturally fall upon the shoulders of those who may be so entrusted. lt was with the idea of afford- ing the student the best of the available educational opportunities to permit him to achieve the ultimate goal, that the Stevens curriculum was evolved. An all-round technical education is the key-note of Stevens and, four years of six-day weeks is the require- ment for successful completion of the course comprising Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Chemical, and Management Engineering. Primarily the course of instruction is the same for all the students with the exception of Senior Technical Elec- tives and various Humanities electives. The course for the first two years is essentially the same as at other engineering colleges but includes more hours per week. During this two-year period the fundamentals of Mathe- matics, Physics, Chemistry, and Mechanics are taught along with Accounting, Machine Design, Shop Practice, English and History. The last two years are devoted to the application of the primary knowledge to fundamental engineering prin- ciples. ln this stage of the education, all of the funda- mentals of the five phases of engineering are taught, in contradistinction to specialized education in a single field of engineering. Studied in Mechanical Engineering are dynamics of fluids, mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, heat- power engineering and internal combustion engines. Two years of laboratory work provide testing experience in all of these fields. The Civil Engineering courses provide the student with field work and allow for a strict understanding of the principles and mode of design of all combinations of steel and concrete. The laboratory course includes the actual design of structures. - The Electrical Engineering courses teach the student the reasoning necessary for the design of electrical appa- ratus, the operation thereof, and the multiple adaptations of the equipment to industry. Two years of laboratory work here allows for the practical application of all class- room theories. 5 1 cl The Chemical Engineering courses, based on two years of laboratory work start the students on the bottom rung ot the ladder with qualitative and quantitative analysis. Under Industrial Chemistry comes studies, tests, and analyses of the materials and processes of industry. The chemistry ot the major industries is later specifically studied. The fundamentals of organic chemistry are included under the study of the Petroleum lndustry. The purpose of the curriculum is to educate the youth to think as an engineer and to learn engineering methods. Ot secondary importance is the accumulation of facts pertinent to specialized branches of engineering. For the most part this specialization remains to be acquired by the Stevens Engineer upon graduation into the industrial world, with his comprehensive training in the funda- mentals as his guide. 6 DEPARTMENTS MECHANICAL ENGINEERING The standards of performance expected of students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering is that re- quired of young engineers in practice. The lecture courses lay stress on the wide and diverse applications of the few basic principles underlying all engineering. ln addition to the fundamental courses required of all students there are elective courses in the Senior year for those who are interested in special topics. ln the laboratories, in which the investigations parallel the analytical studies, the men are put on their own resources as far as is consistent with speed and efficiency. The objective in the laboratory work is to help the stu- dent develop an engineering viewpoint. He is encouraged to compare his own performance with that of experi- enced workers. Every effort is made to prevent tests from degenerating into mere routine measurements. The laboratory reports are expected to be of a character of those submitted to an employer or a client, All students are required to take courses in strength of materials, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, steam power plants-including heaters, boilers, engines, tur- bines,-internal combustion engines, refrigeration, air conditioning, heating and ventilating. R. F. DEIMEL, Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering 7 7 -Y-W v CHEMISTRY Freshman Year - General Chemistry. Experimental lectures and recitations. Four hours per week. Sophomore Year - Qualitative and Quantitative Anal- ysis, including the analysis of boiler feed waters. First term, 4 hours laboratory and l hour recitation per week. Second term, Zl hours Midwinter week, plus 3 hours laboratory per week. junior Year - Industrial Chemistry. Chemistry of Fuels, Engineering Materials and Metallurgy. Lectures and Recitations, 3 hours per week. Analysis of Engineering Materials, including gas anal- ysis and calorimetry, First term, 4 hours laboratory per week. Physical Methods of Analysis of Engineering Materials, including hydrogen-ion determination, optical methods, distillation and metallography. Second term, 3 hours per week. Senior Year - Organic Chemistry. Elective course. Lectures and recitations. 3 hours per week. Advanced Industrial Chemistry. Elective course. Lec- tures and recitations. 3 hours per week. Metals. Elective Course. Lectures and recitations. 3 hours per week, laboratory optional. The aims in the instruction in the various chemical Courses are primarily to teach the students the funda- mental principles underlying chemical changes, to broaden their general chemical knowledge, to train them in habits of exact experimentation, and to make them as familiar as possible with those chemical principles, tests and analyses which are of importance in general engineering and chemical engineering work. The time devoted to chemistry at Stevens is rather more than in many engineering courses, but is less than in most specialized chemical engineering courses. However, in the past years, Stevens graduates have been able to succeed in nearly all branches of the chemical industry, and in many cases have competed successfully with the graduates of more specialized four-year courses in chemical engineering. FRANCIS 1. POND, Professor Department of Chemistry 8 CIVIL ENGINEERING The work within the Department of Civil Engineering is a part of the unspecialized curriculum of Stevens. General and specific aims are: to assist in giving to all graduates a broad engineering education to open to view the scope of Civil Engineering, and further, to show its relation to the other major branches of engineering. His- torically the oldest of all engineering activities, it is based on scientific principles and covers its own comprehensive field, yet its development from early times has been materially aided by the use of machines and appliances. At the end of the freshman year, both theoretical and practical instruction in field engineering is given for a period of six weeks at the Stevens Engineering Camp. During the sophomore and junior years the courses in mechanics, hydraulics and testing of materials are given here in other departments. ln the senior year the work of the Department deals with the development of the underlying theory of the main branches of Civil Engineeringg structures of steel and of reinforced concrete, brief fundamental theory in highway engineering, foundations and municipal engi- neering, Emphasis at all times is placed upon the funda- mental analysis of a problem, which is conceived to be of prime importance, regardless of the particular field of engineering. Alumni records show that quite a good number of Stevens graduates have found their primary interests in this field, and numbers of them have attained to places of eminence in the field of Civil Engineering. DAVID L. SNADER, Professor Department of Civil Engineering 9 A ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING To carry out the general purposes of the curriculum at Stevens, this Department endeavors to meet the follow- ing demands: first, to fit graduates to enter any branch of electrical engineering and, through continuing their study, to compete successfully with graduates of more highly specialized electrical engineering courses: sec- ondly, to equip graduates entering other fields of engi- neering to deal intelligently with such electrical matters as may come within their duties and, finally, to assist in giving all graduates a broad technical education that will enable them to attack new problems with vision and con- fidence. ln the junior Year, second term, the basic physical laws and relations of electric conduction, electromag- netism, and electrostatics are discussed with reference to their engineering applications, and are illustrated by care- fully selected classroom problems and laboratory exer- cises. Throughout the Senior Year the fundamental electrical and magnetic concepts and principles are applied in the study of standard direct-current and alternating-current machinery equipment, measuring instruments, and power transmission and distribution circuits, communication systems - wire and radio - including applications of vacuum and gas-filled electronic tubes: and electrical transients. Laboratory exercises and the solution of numerous problems provide practice in the interpretation and calculation of engineering data. The Electrical Engineering Laboratories are equipped with a sufficient diversity of instruments, machines and apparatus to provide a varied program of undergraduate laboratory instruction. F. C. STOCKWELL, Professor Department of Electrical Engineering lO MANAGEMENT ENGINEERING Work at Stevens in economics of engineering has a major and a minor purpose. The minor purpose is to fit men for industrial and business positions, in fields such as line production, cost accountancy, investment mathe- matics, etc. The major purpose is to turn out young engineers having some rudimentary acquaintance with the way in which business is done. Thus the boy is more apt to fit in with the mechanism of modern busi- ness as it is conducted here and now. Students are shown something both of the vocabulary and attitude of pres- ent-day business. Following are the topics of the under- graduate course. Economic theory . . . Industrial and economic posi- tion of the United States . . . Accounting . . . Cost accounting . . . Mathematics and accountancy of investment, wasting assets . . . Appraisals and valu- ations . . . Utility rate structures and rate making . . . Corporation finance, analysis of financial state- ments . . . Money and banking, current develop- ment . . . Elementary statistical theory . . . Recent labor legislation. The students who elect to do so may increase the time ordinarily allotted by two-thirds, in a study of: INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING: physical location, site, equipment and facilities: management technique, or- ganization, personnel, control, training: budgeting, stores, planning, pay systems, job evolution, standards. For those students who wish to go still further, grad- uate courses are offered. WILLIAM D. ENNIS, Professor Department of Economics of Engineering Il I .
