Students respect and ad- mire Mrs. Pomiecko because, both in school and out, she is always most willing to assist students in any way she can. She goes beyond her duty as a classroom teacher and becomes more like a friend to her students. It is for these reasons that the Seniors of I98l wish to honor one of their favorite teachers: Mrs. Hazel Pomiecko. l ts f I I STUDENT LIFE FACULTY LINDERCLASSM EN SPGRTS SPRING FALL WINTER ACTIVITIES SENIORS OXJCIX 90 gf 2 Tw o o X 0 0 0 4N'WNjC'QAwT,fwI I - -I -M Tu, S, we CAO MII A 40 YT 99' HAQIC' I IX W .571 -wi Nw , VPC -ce, UULIJ-.U J I L A Yxwgf L WI PKILG L qc jbfmnd V ,031 Ukgffcfwvxf V' X ,YU f 3 I J 'IO FI I NL HIIJ I 1'9'tLILTI Qiggcx Vmsvcwwepc fmqHf,f if QE' 0 Ll Ar 929 LQIHLLITII I if -HIL - Im- .:,f fp 'WL fivizl df' CM , 4 C C X . fy! By going on backpack, winter survival, ice climbing, and canoeing trips, students learn about their physical and mental limits, and very often they are sur- prised at how much they can do. The student pushes himself past all that he believed he could do, and that gives him a good feeling about himself. Mr. Green, "Mom Richardson", and their crew are an important part in helping the students to realize their potentials. What is Project Challenge? Project Challenge is FUN. JIMMIINIIM W The class of I98I Junior Prom was held in the Stevens gym on May I7. l98O, with the students dancing to the music of Freefall. Under the direction of Ron Nelson, the gym had been beautifully decorated to a theme of "Stairway to Heaven", Laura Snow. who was escorted by Joe Mozden, was crowned Queen. I98O was a successful year for the Stevens track team, which was co-cap- tained by Celeste Bouchard, Cindy Stowell, Mark Biron. and Carlos Alvarez. Some memorable moments came when we finished third in the Connecticut Valley Championships and second at the Fall Mountain Invitational. The team's strong points were the one-two punch of David Westover and Mark Biron in the mile and two mile, and the sprinting of Andy Lanzer. The con- sistent performances of Debbie Mayo in the discus, Jeff Mayo in the javelin, De- linda Searles, Loralie Goss, Leslie Mar- danes. and Mike Ahern in the high jump and long jump. and Celeste Bouchard. Joe Mozden, and Harold DeCelIe in the half and quarter miles garnered many points for the team. 'fl l BQY' TENN S Front Row: C. Lancaster, J. Dixon, T. Tetreault, J. Estabrook, K. Kinhan. Practicing with the team was Irene Binia from Argentina. Although she was not allowed to compete in school matches, lrene proved herself to be an excellent player and was an asset to the training sessions. The team was a closely knit one. PEP RALLY I On Friday, October I7. I98O, Stevens held its fall sports pep rally. The spirit was great as the football, soccer, field hockey, and cross country teams gathered to psyche themselves for their upcoming contests. Captains and coaches from the teams made informal speeches, and Big Red gave a great pep talk. The soccer and football cheerleaders got together and did a great routine, and the band played the music of "Rocky" as the teams left the gym. That night there was more excitement as everyone got together for the big bon- fire. There were more pep talks and. of course, the burning of dummies represent- ing opposing players. The Homecoming dance put on by the senior class on Satur- day wrapped up a very successful school spirit weekend. 't SGCC ER 'ut' Row I: M. Simpson, J. Stoughton, S. Rouillard, R. Robbins, J. Mozden. The I980 girls' Field Hockey team, led by senior co- captains Celeste Bouchard and Diane Poirier, started the season with only five returning Varsity players. but what the girls lacked in experience they made up for in spirit. The tune of "Another One Bites the Dust" could often be heard on the field, and although the other teams did not frequently "bite the dust", the Cards never said die. Elev- en Varsity players and one Junior Varsity player attended field hockey camp during the summer, which is a record for Stevens and shows what dedication the girls had. The biggest highlight of the year was the Cardinals' win over a very highly favored Windsor team early in the season. The final record of 3-7-3 is misleading, for the girls lost several disputed contests and had many close games. Jeanne St. Pierre, senior goalie and first-year player, de- serves much credit for her many great saves and her super sportsmanship. Senior fullback Diane Poirier and junior inner Kristen Aimi, both valuable players to the team, were selected to the CVL allstar team. Coach Aimi has high hopes for a successful season in l98l, with a great many seasoned varsity players returning next year. Junior Varsity. Row I. W. Clark, J. Bergeron, M. Maculiewicz, P. Marro, C. Wood. -mv-rua, Coach Paul Potter's Cross-country boys' squad had an exceptional year with captains Dave Westover and Dave Clough leading the way. The team had a record of ll-5 and fin- ished second at the CVC. During the season Westover proved that he was the best that Stevens has ever had by being the CVC and State champi- on and runner-up at the New England Championships. The rebuilding girls' team, which was lead by captain Lau- ra Jennings, had a record of 2-IO. This record doesn't show the effort and the determination of the girls' team. Freshman Tammy Raymond was the top scorer on the girls' team and shows much potential for the fu- ture. F LL CHEERLE DER SOCCER-BOTTOM ROW. D. Tice, C. Bowen, R. Flechette, J.
