When September arrives
And activities start,
Much fills our days,
We can't tell them apart,
We cherish them all, '
But our memory's not clear,
So in order to keep them,
. We've stored them in here.
Now as they all happened,
We've recorded each treasure,
And when Awe have finished,
You can read them with pleasure.

This year's varsity was led by a pair of quarterbacks Terry Tay-
lor and Jum Brauer who both doubled as members of the defenslve
umt Taylor was a very fine runner especnally on keeper plays
off the tackles and was a better than average passer but for lack
of good receuvers Ins percentage was not exceptional Carrymg the
bulk of the rushmg attack were Gordon Summers and Jlm Tarner
Summers was conststantly good whsle Tarner was sensational In
spots but mlunes kept htm from runnmg at full speed all the hme
He returned the openmg kICk-OH of the season elghty four yards
ual
The Braves under the guldance of coach Bob Henard had gust
an average season as they flnnshed with a record of four wlns and
four losses A large number of ll1lUI'leS to key players hampered
their chances for a more successful season These lnlurles forced Hen
ard to come up wlth some strange offenses In an effort to utlllze
the best maternal avatlable
Biggest ground-gamer for the Braves was John Zaeske who al
for a touchdown against Newman in one of his better games
Up front the lme was bolstered by 195 pound lumor tackle Abel
Taualn and 175 pound senlor guard Dave Thomas Thomas was the
only Warnor to recenve all league recognltlon bemg placed on the
second team of the Northwest dlvlslon all stars Also throwing thelr
wenght In pretty good fashnan were guards Hank Heckman and Phll
Smroll tackle Alch Gallentlne ends Fred Davis and Dough Banse
and a palr of pmtslzed but deadly llnebackers Bernie Kolls and
Rlch Ebersole
S
most single handedly defeated Newman and turned ln spectacular
performances In other games but he too was a vlcttm of sustalned
lnlurles and was only avallable for part tlme duty Other players
who should make excellent varslty players Include Jlm Wlse John
Andreas and Paul Stewart all backs and llnemen Lynn Hefflehnger
John Wlre and Arlyn Oettmg
Coach Carson DeJarnetts freshman squad enloyed a very success a 13 7 setback at the hands of Dlxon while the wms came nn palrs

Although the Warriers did not win a large percentage of their games they did im
prove greatly toward the end of the season and should show great promise for the
next several years Their will to wm and scrap were pleasing characteristics as they
never gave up even when things looked bleak
The Warriors were a young ball club with only three seniors among the top twelve
maiority of the season Three sophomores John Moore John Willis and Fred Gebhardt
saw considerable action all in starting roles at one time or another Another John
Andreas loined the team for several games at the end of the season and did a com
mendable 'ob These four sophomores and Don Henson who was out most of the sea
son with a broken foot starters Jim Laos and Jerry Tuft and reserve John Willis and
Larry Braun should form the top players for next years team

several games at the beginning of the season and Bob McCormick Two Iumors Rich

Homecoming week was the outstanding event of the fall season. The week was filled
with excite-ment, enthusiasm, and surprises. Decorating the fioats, holding an impromptu
pep meeting at Central Park, and having a snake dance across the S.H.S. campus added
much excitement to the special occasion.
The homecoming parade, sponsored by the Student Council, was a big success with
thirty-four entries. The senior class won top honors when their float, "The Spirit of S.H.S."
placed first as most beautiful. Mr. Henard's homeroom qualified first as most humorous
with the theme "Bilko Says It's in the Bag." "We'll Walk All Over Streator," an entry
by Mrs. Dillon's homeroom took first place as most original.
Although the football game with Streator was a loss for Sterling, school spirit was at
its peak. During the halftime of the varsity game, the five queen finalists were chauffered
around the track and escorted to the field where Phyllis Woessner, a senior, was
crowned the 1958 Homecoming Queen.
The traditional homecoming dance, sponsored this year by the Science Club, was held
in the fieldhouse. "Lunar Holiday" was the theme which was carried out very effectively.
Entering through a gigantic rocket we saw a realistic crater erupting and a huge moon
suspended in air. At intermission, Ron Zemke, president of the Science Club, presented
the homecoming queen and her attendants, Janet Wetzell, Sue Scott, Jean Myers, sen-
iors, and Jan Johnson, a iunior.
