The Amer1can system has bullt up equauty

GRI-I N VALLI- Y
Nestled among the snowy erags of the White
Mountains in New Hanipshne there hes a beat.
tiful green xalley
At one end of the xalley there rises a moun
tain winch by xirtue of its brilliant foliage
xx as called The Great Green Mountain by th
t ibe of lndlans who urst irhlbited tue xalley
Natuie had tak n a curious fancy in shaping
the mountain for at the top she had formed a
httle plateau From the slele of the plateau fae
ing the xalley there was a sneer drop of sex eral
thousand feet to the xalley Iloor below From
the plateau one has an msplrlng xiew of the
valley and the mountains on each side
Happy Eagle had spent many pleasant hours
on this httle plateau He had come he-le frst
when he was a httle boy to calm himself aftel
outbreaks of temper As he grew older the
valley and the xiew took on new importance
for him
Many moons passed and Happy Eagle oecame
a chief the braxest warrior in his tribe but
unhke the other brax es he would spend many
silent hours at his sanctum the little plateau
nigh above th valley He was dreaming always
dreaming of the day when his tribe would be
the most powerful of all Looking down at the
envisioned them as green and golden with fields
of corn and maize He saw the tribe grow and
11 time inhabit the whole fertile xalley Dream
ing always dreaming of the day when
The days passed and Happy Fagle took many
trips outside h1s beloved xalley looking ox er the
land spying on other tribes planning for the
day when he xxould be able to realize his dream
Each time he returned his xalley looked mole
beautiful to him
A man obsessed with noble ideas whether
he be savage or not usually leads a noble hfe
So it was with Happy Fagle His tr1be reeog
nized him as their leader and supreme chief
One day as he was descending from his m0-ill
tain a trusted warrior told him that a strange
tribe had entered the lower end of the valley
Fear clutched for the moment at Happy Fagles
heart then was gone Why should he fear" Was
not his tribe as fit as any other" Yes but they
were not ready for his great plans He must
act at once
Feverlshly the tribe t to woil male ng
bows and arrows tomahawks and arrowheads
of wnich they would need a large supply Happy
lfagle was exerywh ie at once gixing ordeis
hcle encouraging there With him this xxould
be more than the saxage struggle for self pres
eixation The work was slow and Happy Eagle
began to grow uneasy As yet they had heard or
seen nothing of the other tribe He feared that
perhaps they were ready for the struggle fol
possession of the xallev In two days he would
be readv for his assault One fatal afternoon he
sat in his tepee miklng arrow heads Thougnt
of his tribe his pl'1ns for the future filled his
mind
th 1 sudden h w 'is aroused from his rex erie
bv 1 snlppmff twig close by He got up and
looked outside All around he saxv sinister forms
taixing., xent to his deepest wax cry he seized a
tomahawk md flung himself at the nearest
phantom
The camp was aroused and from exery tepee
poured the brayes of the tribe The number ol
their adxelsarles was great Happy Eagle saw
one after another of his men go down undei
e swinging tomahawks of the lnxaders Eael
one gave a new stab to his heart The massa
ere was pitlless Women children and new boin
babes were dragged forth and scalped while
happy Lagle fought on in agony of despair
Finally he observed that he was the lone
survixor Despalrmg all he started to run to
wards the path which led up the mountain
As he left he was noticed by three of the
blood crazed assassms who started after him
Although he was exhausted he managed t
keep ahead of them and out of sight
Scrambnng desperately up the steep ann
rugged slope of the Great Green Mountain his
brain was founding w th the thought that he
must gain his plateau and look once more upon
the valley he loxed Bushes and brambles tore
at him but he ignored them in his wild rush
exei upward upward
klnally he burst through the scrub pine th
rama was spread before his eyes He grew
calmer and walked slowly toward the edge For
many minutes he stood with arms folded Wllh
out a single muscle moving a silent majestic fig
ure with his world before him His green xalley
with xts myriads of irldcseent streams and fra
grant meadows the mountams with their shin
ng tops beckoned to him in the distance The
smkmg sun slid down behind him All his
dreams his hopes and plans were shattered
his world was in despair All was gone Happy
Lagle now knew the heartbreak of ambition
All wxs ended but the beautiful gr en xalley
was still there
A soft erunch in the underbrush warned him
that his enemies were at hand As they stepped
upon the plateau hate turned to awe for '-lappy
Lagle had become truly a palt of the xalley he
loved
Tourists who come down from the Great
Green Mountain say that at sunset on a clear
day one can see an Indian face clearly drawn in
the rippling streams and wooded groxes of the
xalley
Those who hxe in the xalley know whose
face it is and gixe thanks for their prosperity to
the Indian god Happy Eagle whom they know
still inhabits his gieen xalley
