"Pop" Watson has been concerned and interested in student affairs. "Pop" has organized and sponsored the Christian Student Union and has done much to further a wholesome atmosphere among the students. He has been a Christian influence and inspiration to both the students and to the faculty. Mr. Watson was graduated from Franklin High School and then attended Sam Houston State Teachers College. Hfter col- lege, he returned to Franklin High School to teach. He taught two years in Goliad County in Hnder and Schroeder schools. Pop began teaching in the Houston Public Schools in l92l. Before coming to Hustin sixteen years ago, he taught at Sam Houston High School. School teaching is not the only occupation at which Mr. Watson has excelled. He was at one time postmaster in Robert- son County and was once a merchant and proprietor of his own store. In keeping with the subject he teaches, he has also been an auditor. "Pop" will always remain dear to each of us who have had the pleasure of knowing him. We shall always remember him as a true friend, a beloved teacher, a helpful companion, and as a man of high character. So it is with great pleasure that we dedicate the 1953 Corral to Mr. I. W. Watson. l ... TH , 'I i 33? I SEIIIUR HIGH SCH00l 1 Imll 'II 1011? vu- - .. L - 1-Q 1.-Q.-- -..Q X-.H N . .L 'AL-f ...H+-SN,-wi .gn QQ. new ' ,wi K , 1. Noises were a mixturelof work and play. The Corral's coverage of student life, sports, clubs, faculty, etc., gives a good description of life at Plustin. The aim of the Corral staff this year was to equal and to surpass past editions of the annual. Posters of every color in the rainbow were placed throughout the school to advertise and boost the sales of the book. Plfter seven long months of endured efforts, we, the Corral staff present to you of Hustin High School this 1953 Corral. Suffi- cient credit must be given to all who have participated in pro- ducing this annual. This not only includes the staff members, but Mrs. Bowen, who helped with division pages, Mr. Quin of Gulf Publishing Company, Raeburn Studios, Wheat Studios and the members of the school administrative staff. The following is not original but serves the purpose of ex- pressing the thoughts of the staff. "We've given the best of our brain and hand. We have planned and worried and prayed: We hope you'll be able to understand. Rnd forgive the mistakes we have made." The first color was stroked on the canvas for the picture of life by the admini- stration editor. Personality and individuality were added to the painting by the feature section. The club editor added her touch of color to the picture, while the sports editor's section gave a vivid brightness to the masterpiece. H view of student life at Qustin completed the picture of life, the center of which were the Senior, junior, and Sophomore sections. For the economic view of the picture there were many businessmen who gave their support in the advertising section. To the painting the final and finishing touches were brushed on by the editor, Mary Carmack. Hs each color was added to life's picture it came closer to being like the picture you had been waiting for, and praying for. From picture to picture you were lazy, busy, apathetic, enthusiastic, depressed, and happy. Old traditions were preserved while new ones were left. Now this year of '53 is history. Through fall, winter, spring, and summer Flustin was a turmoil of accomplishment, good fun, and book-larnin'-all adding variety, symmetry, and harmony to this year of 1953 in life's picture. With 8 return- ing lettermen, David Prescott, Dicky Thompson, Eric Ieter, Mack Burli, lack Hrmbruster, Paul Pickell, Billy Gage, and Iohn Easley, the team should finish the year with an impressive record. Hustin Track Team made a fine showing this year. ln both the Baytown meet and the Oleander relays 'in Galveston, the Mustang Cinder team placed third, the only Houston team to place so high They broke three records in these meets and are expected to have records just as good in the city meet. Stevie has his hopes high that Hustin's '53 Track Team will be the l953 State Champs. The Pony swimmers are predicted to place third in the city. Qlthough this hasn't been one of the best Hustin tank seasons there have been a host of exciting meets. Lack of swimmers seemed to be the Mustang's only drawback. Mustang hopes for a winning season gained strength as the golfers took on opposing teams. Fllthough the unit had only two returning lettermen, much valuable support was offered by new-comers. The 1953 tennis team is expected to make a good showing in the city meet with one returning letterman. Hccording to Coach Schiller the squad is very promising and should place high in city ratings. The year 1952-53 was a commendable over-all sport year for Stephen F. Hustin. Basketball kept going until they went to the state meet, while the football team tied one and dropped only one. So far track is headed for a season of records and winnings. Tennis and baseball, the swimmers and the golfers are expected to put on fine showings before the seasons close. The biggest single moment of the year in Flustin sports was the basketball game with Pampa in the state meet. lt was a tough battle and Pampa was hard pressed be- fore they came out on the long end of a 48-37 count. Polly Tech. was overwhelmed by the Mustang five and the Plustin team came home boasting 3rd. place in the state meet. I-lll in all it was a great sport year for the Mustangs with most of the teams rank- ing near the top, if not on top. It can truly be called a successful sport year for Hustin.
