TEACHERS AND PUPILS united in work and play A school is no better than its faculty, so we at Austin are very grateful for our fine teachers. Hardly a student goes through high school vvithout having at least one good friend and adviser on the faculty. We can thank these understanding, toler- ant people who give us the spirit of inspiration and achievement that prevails in our class rooms. They are the ones that show us that learning can be found outside books as well as in them. For some students this friend is Mr. Sher- man, a very versatile personality who for years has been a cultural influence here at Austin. It started off with a bang, as the various activities kept us constantly on the run. In December, the first Aloha Prom rolled around and in January, Commencement Day, our mid-term graduates left us. Ole' S.F.A, felt kind of sad after that and very, very proud of our 24 seniors who left then to try their luck in the world, and to use some of the knowledge stored up during their years here. Early in the spring came the election of our class officers. The races were close and it was hard to choose from so many capable candi- dates. But when the campaign smoke cleared, we found Truett Airhart the new commander- in-chief. Jack Brandt was chosen vice-presi- dent, Virginia Mattiza, secretary, Louis Har- vey, treasurer, David Yeager, sgt.-at-arms, Gus Zgourides, lawyer, and Neil Leva, poet. Our officers were confronted with all the usual problems of a graduating class, plus a few extra ones thrown in because of the hi-gh cost of living. But gradually, plans were made, dates set, and money collected. There was homework to be done, reports and notebooks to make, and tests to cram for, but we survived them with no casualties. There was at least one consolation, though, because this Page eighteen THE SENIORS LOOK BACK SENIOR COUNCIL H-1. Jo Cvoosby. year our rings were delivered the first part of '48, and when they came, we all walked around with our heads in the clouds. Golly, it's funny what a big thrill you can get from such a little thing as a class ring! Time fairly flew, and finally, in the latter part of April, the Senior Dance came along. It was held in the Rice Hotel Crystal Ballroom, thanks to the generosity and co-operation of some of the mothers and fathers of Austin students. It will long be remembered as an extra special event in the hearts of all those who attended. In the "merry month of May", the ole' joint really began jumpin'. On the tenth, the annual Senior Banquet was held, where toasts were made to the health, happiness, and prosperity of all of us leaving Austin at the end of the term. On the twenty-second, we had our second Aloha Prom for the year in the gym. For the annual picnic, we all journeyed down to Lyondell Park for a day of real fun. May 28, Senior Day, will long be remembered in the hearts of the class of '48, Class Morning brought the Senior Play and an all-round wonderful program. That night our families and friends proudly watched as 340 of us guys and gals solemnly received our diplomas. So we lined up for the last time together. Now we have only fond memories of a perfect senior year. XNVPIH I'Cl'C VVC HFC. HIC CIEISS oi Xiiiuii 1. 'liiizimuiiip Nllixlfullg l'mustvi'x. :ii xiii. CGACHES AND PLAYERS who have represented our school in all the sport events of this year. Under ceaseless guidance from our three coaches, the Mustangs have undergone stiff training, displaying well-planned and care- fully executed maneuvers in all fields of sport participation. Football, basketball, track, baseball or what ever the sport, our team played a clean, hus- tling, colorful game. It was the fine cooperation of our coaches and players and their sincere earnestness to bring glory to Austin that kept the ole' green and white spirit forever flaming. On the shoulders of our six swell cheerlead- ers, fell the responsibility of letting the fellows know we were for 'em. Drill Major Austin's top-rate drill squad, the Scottish Brigade, gained more ad- mirers than ever before during this eleventh year of its existence. The Brigade owes most of its national fame to the beloved organizer and sponsor, Miss Beatrice Lytle, and its music director, Mr. Michael Spam- pinato. The Brigade's precision-timed per- formance was synonymous with each Mustang football game. Perhaps the MISS BEATRICE LYTLE Colonel Lucille Gibson most memorable performance of t year was at the annual Shriners Ba when the Brigadiers presented unusual Irish theme. The last pt formance of the year was at t Austin-Reagan pre-season baseb game. In addition to these drills, t Brigadiers participated in an inft mal initiation at Lyondale Park the end of the summer, the anm Flag Dance at Ripley House, a Wednesday afternoon bowling. Each company enjoyed nurnerc slumber parties throughout the yc and the "Brigade Follies", put on April, was another highlight of t year. April brought the installation new officers for the 1948-'49 seas and the unhappy leaveftaking of t Seniors. DYER This year was a fine one for the Senior Sub-Debs, who had a record membership of over seventy-five girls. These fiendish gals started the year with their informal initiation of the Junior Sub-Debs out at Hermann Park. To celebrate the Christmas season, they gave a formal dance in the gym, and as is customary, invited the Juniors. In January, a banquet for the formal initiation of the Juniors was held at "Ye Old College Inn", and later in the year the girls had a big picnic and swimming party out at Lyondell Park, which topped off an activity- packed year. Q ILL AN CROLL Austin's chapter of the Quill and Scroll was organized along with the school in 1937 to acknowledge superior literary work of students working on school publications. These students rank in the upper third of their class, and have had samples of their best work approved by the national headquarters at Northwestern University. This year, the organization decided to be more active, and indulge in quite a few socials. ln the fall, a Mexican banquet was given, followed by a series of parties and picnics, and con- cluded the year's activities with a party at the bay, to bid the senior members farewell and to initiate the new officers 'or next yeur. The Club constitution was changed this year to pro- vide for a board of directors, consisting of three mem- bers chosen from each class, which attends to the club's business, leaving the regular meetings of the whole group free for other activities. Every six weeks the entire group held a meeting at Ripley House, where enjoyable programs were put on. Several educational movies, two book reviews and a play staged by the Dramatic Department were the highlights of these meetings. After many of these programs, hot dogs and chili or spaghetti dinners were FALL OFFICERS W? served, ,much to everyone's delight, and later in the evenings there was dancing for all those who cared to join in. On December 12, the semi-annual banquet was held in the private dining room at Bill Williams' honoring the mid-term graduates. The spring banquet was also held at Bill VVilliams', at which speech letters were awarded to the outstanding speakers of the previous semester. Mrs. Dement, the sponsor, has built it up from the 20 members of a few years ago to its more than 100 members today. These students unanimously agree that it is largely through her guidance and efforts that the Gavel Club has rightfully taken its place as one of the outstanding organizations at Austin. ws.. . 4 . ...wimieilfi ' SPRING Ol"l"lClCRS 1 Seated: Edward Thompson. faidee Guerin.
