LO GBX 73 Longex 73 was a combined annual RNZNIRNAF Maritime and Antisubmarine joint ex- ercise conducted in New Zealand waters from September 26 through October 3rd, 1973. Eleven Ships and three types of Aircraft from five Nations including Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States participated. The exercise included operations into the Mid Tasman Sea with the control staff operating from an ashore headquarters in Auckland. Participating forces included from Australia, the Guided Missile Destroyer HMAS Perth 1381, The Destroyer HMAS Vampire l11i, The Destroyer Sup- port Vessell HMAS Stalwart 12151, The Submarine Onslow, plus three Neptune Long Flange Maritime Patrol Aircraft. New Zealand forces included the Frigates HMNZS Canterbury iF-421i and HMNZS Otago QF-1111, three Orion Anti-Submarine Patrol Aircraft plus six Skyhawk Attack Aircraft. Ships from the Netherlands in Longex 73 were the Anti- Submarine Escort HMLMS Limburg iD-814i and the Frigate HMLMS Van Galen KF-803i. United Kingdom units included the General Purpose Frigate Dido lF- 104i and the Tanker Tidespring QA-75i. The United States Navy was represented by three units of the U.S. Seventh Fleet, the Destroyers USS McMORRlS QDE-1036i, USS AGERHOLM lDD-826i, and USS STEIN KDE-1065i with ComDesFlon Five Embarked. The U.S. Ships visited several Australian and New Zealand ports prior to and upon completion of Longex 73.
