S 05 STEIN SHIP, 1-11 TORY USS STEIN QDE-10653 is a KNOX Class Ocean Escort named in honor of Corporal Tony STEIN, Marine hero and Medal of Honor winner in World War ll. STEIN is one of 46 KNOX Class destroyers and is the third of five constructed for the Navy by Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company, Seattle, Washington. The DE-1052 Class Ocean Escort is configured for optimum anti- submarine performance. They are especially adept at searching out and destroy- ing enemy submarines, but are also configured for and capable of carrying out other routine destroyer tasks, such as Naval Gunfire Support, Anti-Air Warfare and replenishment operations. STEIN is 438 feet long, has an extreme beam of 47'11 , a navigational draft, including the sonar dome, of 25', full load displace- ment of 4,200 tons, and a speed in excess of 27 knots. The cruising radius is over 4,000 miles and STElN'S berthing accommodations are for 22 officers and 255 men. STEIN is powered by two automatically fired boilers which supply 1200 psi steam through dual steam turbines to single, five-bladed screw. The propulsion plant is rated at 35,000 shaft horsepower. The fresh water distilling plant produces in excess of 20,000 gallons of fresh water per day. Since STElN'S primary mission is anti-submarine warfare, her main arma- ment is configured to provide the optimum in Alfmi search, detection and kill.
