The fourteen were Edward Christians, Glenn DeVries, Marilyn and Marlyn Ellison, Laverne Freese, Jessie Hanson, Suzanne Harper, Joe Knight, Ronald Loewen, Karen Luiken, Patricia Luiken Bonnie Pierson, Merlyn Rosburg, and Lyle Steinfeldt. Patricia Luiken decided to go traveling and left at the end of the first semester. Suzanne Harner, Marilyn and Marlyn Ellison also left us. We didn't mind coming to school our second year, by 1 we were old hands at it. Again Miss Smith was our teacher. Our class grew ---- there were fifteen of us. Adeline Maronn and John Frerichs joined us at the beginning of the year while some country hicks, namely Jo Ann Hunger, Alle Jassers, and Ivan Jasoers, joined the second six weeks. At the beginning of the second semester Pat Luiken, who had otten tired of traveling, returned bringing a friend, iimmie Holder. Laverne Freese attended only the first sem- ester, than decided to find something new and different. Miss Lois Jasoers guided us through 3rd grade. Shirley Kruse, Marcia Looft, Connie Krominga came to Steamboat Rock, and Richard and Ronald Loewen moved away. y In the fourth grade, 19b7-48, our little group led by Mrs. Herman Primus consisted of dm.following upils: Jessie Hanson, Karen Luiken, Patricia Luiken, Bonnie gierson, Merlyn Rosburg, Lyle Steinfeldt, Jimmie Holder, Shirley Kruse, Jo- Ann Eunger, Alle Jaspers, Ivan Jasners, and John Frerichs. Marcia Looft, Adeline Maronn, and Connie Krominga found new paths and departed. ' I The fifth year of school was an exciting one because we .were about halfway up the ladder of our education. With Mrs. Evelyn Calloway as our guide, we received a great amount of knowledge although there were many bumps and bruises along the way. We gained two new members who had been lost, Wiired Buhr and Phyllis Boll. Mrs. Calloway was also our sixth grade teacher. This year we gained two more members, Marlene Wikert and Eldon Miller. Both had come from different paths and wished to i jo n us. Lyle Steinfeldt became bored and set out to find something more exciting. In the seventh grade wewere guided by Mr. Lowell Uskrat from whom we learned quite a bit. Wilfred Buhr left us, and Roxine Richard came for one semester, but preceded on to dnh ferent tours of knowledge the second semester- As weentered the eighth grade we felt very big for just one more jump and we would be in high school. That year Alan- Hudspeth joined our crew. Rolland Heard also joined our troup. Jessie Hanson was reported to nave found something more interesting and left us. That year we were guided by Mr. Jack Stowell. Our freshman year was exciting especialy at the time of initiation. Mrs. Lillian Brown had charge of us. This vear we only nad one new member teaming up with us, namely Arlene Mudderman who had just completed eight years of training on a differently guided tour. Blass Hi tory As sophomores we didn't lose any members. Our members then were John Frerichs, Ivan Jaspers, Jimmie Holder, Merlyn Rosburg, Eldon Miller, Alle Jaspers, JoAnn Bunger, Phyllis Boll, Shirley Kruse, Karen Luiken, Patricia Luiken, Bonnie Pierson, Marlene Wikert, Alan Hudspeth, Rolland Heard and Arlene Mudderman. Our class sponsor that year was Mrs. Kieth Himmel. As Juniors, we started the two best years of our school days. Under Mrs. Irena DeVault's leadership we gave a wlnter Wonderland Junior-Senior banquet. We chose WThe Skeleton Walksn for our Junior class play under the direction of Mr. Himmel. Arlene Mudderman and Marlene Wikert left us and James Peters joined our troup. Senior Wdazen is more than people let on. WSenioritisH set in early---complications followed. We've been busy work- ing on the annual and the class play, WA1tar Shy.W Also weve been thinking about our class trip. The final graduating group is: Phyllis Boll, Alle Jaspers, JoAnn Bunger, Rolland Heard, Bonnie Pierson, JohnFFrerichs, Karen Luiken, Merlyn Rosburg, Patricia Luiken, Ivan Jaspers,SUJ1ey Kruse, Alan Hudspeth, James Peters, and Eldon Miller. We have now completed our tour of education. Mr. Larry Gehring and Mr. Ralph Beane guided us on our fourth and final year of high school. ,QW 'jg ' A .V .J .L .1 , gi, . They sang for the Hardin County Farm Bureau Women's Contact Day meeting, held-at the Presbyterian Church last fall. Many rehearsals, and sour notes as well as sweet, pre- ceeded the mixed quartette's tryout for All-State Chorus Oct. 22 at East High School in Des Moines. We were overjoyed and could hardly believe our eyes as we saw Steamboat Rock listed among the names of the other schools who had made the grade. Rehearsal was held that afternoon, The obiective had been attained!Three days, November 25, 26, k27th.will remain as memorable music experiences for us. The group stayed at the Kirkwood hotel, attended morning, afternoon, and evening rehearsals. and participated in the All-State Chorus. Bonnie Pierson and John Frerichs with Pat Luiken as accompanist stayed over until the 27th to be auditioned for the national music festival. The girl's trio, boy's quartette, girls's sextette, and mixed quartette sang for the Junior Class Play. The boy's quartette sang at the Odd Fellows meeting in Eldora. Bonnie Pierson sang and gave a muacal reading at the county meet of the American Legion Auxilary. In January, the girl's trio, Jo Ann Bunger, Bonnie Pierson, and the g1rl's quartette sang at the 50th Wedding Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. John Wilts. In the near future, a mixed quartette, girl's sextette, girl's trio, and girl's quartette, composed of all seniors, will sing at the Senior Class Play. The class spent many long, hard hours working with dec- orations. Trees, park benches, and rocks had to be gathered and brought into the gym. On one side of the gym a wall was built and covered to look like the wall of a winter lodge. Through its doors came the servers who were dressed alike in sweaters and scarfs. The results were amazing, the gym was transformed into a garden of beau- tiful snow covered trees and rocks. There were two parts to the test. The first was the objective part in which different situations were given that arise in home- making. The second was a description of the ideal home. The winner of this contest was Phyllis Boll who received the highest score on the examination. She received a gold award pin designed by Trifari and the chance to participate in state judging. Several weeks later the news came that Phyllis had received tne second highest rating out of 6,59b entries in the state. She was then awarded with an honor certificate and a esoo scholarship. We hope this will serve as an incentive for future seniors to do their best in this test and learn all they can about homemaking.
