“Slugger’6“83” Chinook Dedication
Mrs. Ethel A. Hawkins
The 1983 edition of the Chinook is dedicated to Mrs. Ethel A. Hawkins. She was born and raised in Dillon. She received her B.A. from Washington State University in 1957, completed her M.S. at Montana State University, and took sabbatical leave in 1981 to attend Idaho State University.
Mrs. Hawkins has devoted approximately 23 years to teaching as an assistant English professor. Nine of those years have been at Wctcrn Montana College since 1974. She has served as the Chinook advisor and is a member of the Awards Committee at Western.
We the staff of the Chinook wish to thank Mrs. Hawkins for her support, devotion, and dedication to all the students and to Western. We wish her continued success, happiness, and satisfaction, in the years to come.Administration
Building
Dedication
A ribbon cutting ceremony on September 14, 1982, celebrated the dedication of the James E. Short Administrative Center. A fitting tribute to Dr. Short, the renaming honors him for his 19 years service as president of Western. Upon his retirement, he received emeritus status from the Board of Regents for “dedication to the cause of education, exemplified by uncompromising integrity and a unique awareness of his responsibilities during one of the most challenging eras in Western’s history.”
A native of Meagher County, Montana, Dr. Short graduated from WMC in 1935 and received master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Washington. He served as president of Western from 1957 to 1976.
Friends, alumni, faculty, and students joined in honoring Dr. and Mrs. Short at a convocation and reception following the ribbon cutting ceremony. A plaque commemorating the occasion hangs in the main foyer of the building.
9Our President
WESTERN RAYS
The setting sun that signals rest To us, is stirring in the West Others who from sleep’s fond dreams Awake.
The light of this Chinook reflects Past friends, events - and so connects Today with yesterday. Its beams Thus make
The coming and the going one Bright chain, a legacy begun Again - an ever greater dawn, it seems.
At stake.

Dedicated April 23, 1983
In respectful acknowledgement of the sportsmanship, leadership, and humanitarianism epitomized by Bill Straugh, Professor and Athletic Director Emeritus
During his 36-year tenure at Western Montana College, Bill Straugh compiles one of the most impressive records in Treasure State sports history. Among these achievements were 22 championships — 10 in track, nine in basketball, two in football and one in baseball. Under his guidance, WMC basketball teams were victorious in 362 of 591 games, earning nine Montana Collegiate Conference trophies and five berths in the NAIA Finals at Kansas City, Missouri, over a 25-year span. In 1973 he was elected to membership in the exclusive NAIA “Coaches Hall of Fame.”
A native of Idaho, Straugh attended White Sulphur Springs High School, graduated from WMC in 1935 and coached five years at Glasgow before returning to Western as Athletic Director in 1940. His long and distinguished career at this college was interrupted by three years service during World War II. and he is now a lieutenant commander, ret., U.S. Navy Reserve.

Robert Finch was born in Iowa but spent his early life in Dillon. Youngest of a family of four. Finch became a constant companion of his father on fishing trips. He roamed the hills and valleys of this area. It was during these years, the early 1920's, that he acquired a deep knowledge and love of Montana’s rural life. These first impressions remained with him and formed a deep knowledge of the people which in later years formed a nucleus for his plays about the American West.
He attended the University of Montana and the Yale Drama School where his dedication to acting and the theatre developed. For a time, he was an actor in legitimate theatre on Broadway and in off-Broadway plays. His greatest thrill early in his acting career was an ovation by a sophisticated New York audience. After attending the University of North Carolina, he became deeply interested in play writing. Among his published works is a volume of fifteen one-act plays entitled Plays of the American West. Several of his plays have won awards and __ special distinction. “Western Night” won the Theatre Guild Cup in a 1939
production contest. “From Paradise to Butte” and “Summer comes to the Diamond O” have been nationally screened and televised.
