What makes a greatest hit? These are two important questions to think about. We feel that our 1981 Rocket is a greatest hit. Why? Because of the people in it. Ever since 1939. when Star City published it's first yearbook, the book has been improving. Our year- book is called the Rocket because it implies motion onward and upward. When the 1939 Rocket Staff published their book they said. We hope this first effort at a high school yearbook will serve as a springboard for bigger and better Rockets. It did then and it still does. A greatest hit depends on the people. A lot of work goes into the making of a greatest hit. We feel that we have worked hard and done a good job. Our theme this year is Bulldog's Greatest Hits.” We are the Bulldogs and this is all of our greatest hits from academics to athletics for the year 1980- SI. On the Road Again ... Traveling down 81 has been a favorite past-time of many students, and as gradu- ates of '81 they will soon be on the road again. The road of tomorrow, their future. ! ON THE ROAD AGAIN THIS ONE S Educators should be chosen not merely for their special qualifications, but more for their personality and their character, because we teach more by what we are than by what we teach. William James Durant 2 THIS ONE’S FOR YOU MRS. TERESA SCIFRES We, the 1980-81 Rocket Staff, would like to say, This One’s For You, Mrs. Scifres.” We appreciate the way you put yourself into your teaching and all the time and energy you put into making the school plays a success. We also appreciate the effort you put into making your speech class enjoyable. Mrs. Scifres has taught at Star City High School for three years. She teaches English and Speech. She is an Nth and 12th grade class sponsor, she directs all the school plays and is the Speech Club sponsor. She is married to Mr. Burl Scifres and they have one son, Wesley. FOR YOU’’ THIS ONE’S FOR YOU 3 9-1 4 This is a very special page in this yearbook. Each year the Rocket Staff dedicates this page in memory of very special people in our school and city who have passed away, but have made their marks and touched each of our hearts in their own special way. Fortunately, this year there have been no fatalities in our city, and the 1981 Rocket Staff is dedicating this page to our Greatest Hits. These are our Greatest Hits, as selected by the popular vote of the Senior Class of 1981. After suffering two losses in a row on the road against Dumas and McGehee the Bulldogs traveled to Lake Village where they pulled together for their first winning effort of the season. They kept it up the next week by defeating Fordyce at the first home game of the season. The Bulldogs then suffered two straight defeats, at the hands of 8AAA Whitehall and a tough Hamburg team. The Bulldogs-then rallied the latter part of the season by winning three straight games. The dogs handed shut-outs to both Monticello and Eudora. Womack, Grover Brockman, Roland Conner, Robert Trout, and Billy Summerford. BOARD OF EDUCATION At a time when school districts need the support of the community more than ever, we find that this community has been supportive of its school board on almost every issye. The reasons are obvious. Patrons of the district can see and feel that its school board is worthy of its support and cooperation because of board members’ leadership, interest, dedication, progressive attitude and unbiased concerns for the school children of this district. The community has a right to expect these characteristics of its board. As long as this cooperative spirit exists among staff, administra- tors, board members and the community, we can be sure that the education of the youth of this district will continue to be the focal point. 96 LET'S GET SERIOUS D.F. WOMACK SUPERINTENDENT As society changes, the role of the school superintendent must change to meet the challenges it presents. The Star City school system is fortunate to have at its helm a man with the professional abili- ty and interest to handle the ever-chang- ing demands of his job. D. F. Womack is now in his seventh year as school superintendent. Although he has experienced many changes in edu- cation in his tenure here, most of them have been good. Some of the most signifi- cant challenges, however, have been and will continue to be in the area of school finance. With the cut in state funds, it has been difficult to finance and support all the programs that would be desirable for the school district or raise salaries to the level that would be more acceptable. Another area of concern is teacher ac- countability. The general public is more concerned than ever before that its tax money is productive within school sys- tems. With the decrease in school drop- outs occuring (and this is a very desirable by-product), it is sometimes difficult for the public to see that more students are in school than ever before and that, al- though every student may not be able to read well, the percentage of students who cannot read is much lower today than in the history of this nation. Bridging the gaps between school and community in these and other areas is just one of the many roles played by a school superintendent — a role that we feel our superintendent plays well. He is serving as president of the Ar- kansas Association of Educational Admin- istrators this year. This is one of the highest honors to be achieved in school administration in Arkansas because the AAEA is an umbrella organization com- posed of Arkansas Association of School Administrators. Secondary Principals, Elementary Principals. Arkansas Associ- ation of School Business Officials, and Coordinators of Special Education. Mr. Womack continues to serve on the Teacher Certification Committee of the Department of Education and is a mem- ber of the Arkansas Association of Pro- fessional Educators. American Associ- ation of School Administrators. Southeast Arkansas School Study Council, American Legion and Star City Chamber of Com- merce. He was recently appointed to the National Americanism Committee of the American Legion. He is state director for Boy’s State, a 32nd degree Mason, and an active member of the United Methodist Church in Star City. He has served for the past several years as the Arkansas dele- gate to the AASA Meeting. LET'S GET SERIOUS 97 ADMINISTRATION Aileen Campbell’s contribution to the suc- cess of the Star City school system lies in school finance. I hope you enjoy looking at your Rocket as much as we enjoyed putting it together. A special thanks to Mrs. Holder field for having much patience with all of us. Amy Grumbles We've worked really hard on this yearbook and we put a lot of time into it. We have tried to make our book different from all the other years and I hope our efforts have paid off. I hope you enjoy this yearbook and before you criticize it please consider all the time and energy we put into it. I'd like to thank Mr. Brown for being such a help with the pictures. If it had not been for his work and dedication we would have never met our dead- lines. Patti Martin Being a part of the 1981 Rocket staff has been an honor to me. Working to meet our deadlines (hoping everything would turn out right) has been a lot of hard work. A lot of extra time and effort has been put into the '81 Rocket. Working at night and during our free periods so the Rocket would be finished as soon as possible. A very special thanks goes to Mrs. Hol- derfield. If it wasn't for her we never would have made it. I will never forget, over the years to come, the fun times we had making the 1981 Rocket the best Rocket ever. — 218 THIS IS IT Being the senior editor of the Rock- et Staff this year has been a pleasur- able experience for me. It gives me a good feeling inside to know that I was a part of such an important book. The memories captured in this book are very important to me now. but as time goes on I know that they will be price- less. My thanks go to Mrs. Holderfield and to every person that had a part in the yearbook because without their hard work and patience the produc- tion of this yearbook wouldn't be pos- sible. Steve Morrison This year on Rocket Staff has been an experience. I think we have learned a lot about getting along with others. Sometimes the work was hard, but it has been worth it. I think this will be the best Rocket yet. Before you say this is one particular person's scrap- book. stop and think what they do for our school. If that person is active in school they will probably be in our book a lot. We tried to make our book different because this year had been different. This is a book of memories of 1981. I hope you cherish the memo- ries and the book like I will. Charlotte McBryde I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Holderfield and Mr. Brown for putting their time and ef- fort in to what I feel is the best year- book yet. We the Rocket Staff, seniors and juniors alike, worked hard on the yearbook. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed working on it. I am proud to be able to say I was a part of the 1981 Rocket Staff. Susie Powell Being in Rocket Staff was an inter- esting experience. I never realized how much time and effort really went into a yearbook. This is the final prod- uct of a lot of hard work and I hope everyone is pleased with their 1981 Rocket. A special thanks to Mr. Brown for all his help and for being so patient with us this year. Being on the Rocket Staff has been quite an experience for me. I never knew there was so much involved in putting together a yearbook. It’s been hard work, but I think it was well worth my time. I would like to give a special thanks to Mr. Brown for all the help he has given us. I hope that everyone at SCHS will enjoy their 81 Rocket. John Dreher Most of you who read this book will probably never know how much work went into its making. Of course you must realize that it is highly impossible for 14 people alone to make decisions that will please the whole school. We've done the best we could to take a year's worth of memories, make it compact enough to fit. and present it in a way that we hope you will like. We do. Gail Nobles Doug Dodds THIS IS IT 219 This year on the Rocket Staff has really been a learning experience for me. I have come to realize how much hard work goes into making our annu- al. I would like to thank Mrs. Holder- field. Mr. Phillips, and the Senior Staff members for allowing me to be a part of the 1981 Rocket. I hope all of you enjoy this Rocket as much as I have enjoyed working on it. Lisa Green Over the years I have had the privi- lege of working with many yearbook staffs. The 1980-81 Rocket reflects the personality of the staff. This year’s book is outstanding as the result of many hours of hard work and plan- ning. The staff captured the mood of the campus activities this year and memories will come alive each time you turn the pages. Mr. Brown I have enjoyed working as a Rocket Staff member this year. Being one of the Juniors was an even greater honor. There were hard times trying to meet dead- lines. but together we overcame them. A lot of long hours and hard work have been put into this book and I hope you enjoy it. because in these pages lie a year of your life. Tammy Sullivan This year with the Rocket Staff has to be the most enjoyable one yet. This group is one that the school should be proud of. They have tried to consider each person and group, and what they would like in their annual. Each year there are rough spots. But when you have a group like this, it's amazing how easy it is to get over them. I hope you appreciate the work they have put into it-, because they have worked hard and long. I think they have something here that they can be proud of. I'm proud of them and for them. I have enjoyed being involved in working on the Rocket this year. We have worked hard, but we have worked together. I believe we will have a very good Rocket this year. Being on the Rocket Staff has been an experience. Drawing layouts, then making them work and meeting dead- lines can be nerve-racking, but we al- ways managed to survive. Sometimes it felt like we would never meet our deadlines, but somehow we always did and we owe a lot of thanks to Mrs. Holderfield for helping us do it. I feel I’ve learned a lot this year and I hope I can put this knowledge to use next year to help make the 1982 Rock- et great.
