Who did he call to? I mean ... To whom did he call? Me? I? Who? Whom? A memorable phase of English is the work that goes into term papers. Students spend hours pouring over books, making notations, and worrying over footnote forms. Literature is always an interesting part of the course. The heart of any school is its library. Here students find a wealth of information on any subject. School Librarian, Mrs. James Shepard, is always ready to assist students with any of their projects, and to suggest new books. Every six weeks the student body mem- bers of SCHS receive an issue of THE STAR, the student newspaper. Its excellent make- up, effective stories, and constructive edi- torials give no indication of the frenzied activity involved in the paper’s publication. As soon as one deadline is met, work is be- gun on the next issue. Journalism class discusses the previous issue of the paper. 30 The seemingly magic trick of putting numbers where only unknown quantities were before is easy to algebra students. Everyone figures sizes and volumes at least once a day. But mechan- ical computation is only part of math. By careful thinking, In order to find x, I must first discover y, students learn to apply logic and reasoning to their lives. Once upon a time Einstein, Burbank, and Edison conducted experiments very similar to those that go on in the science labs of our high school. The ambitious young scientists spend most of the week studying and learning the essentials of the project at hand. Then they put the new gained knowledge into practice. Junior high science class prepares materials for experiment. Science 7e£U Ha W id HUt un cuo- To many, the smells of an athletic dressing room are irritating and unpleasant, but to some they are very pleasing; they remind them of the joyous hours spent practicing in sports. Found in most dress- ing rooms is the spicy odor of the rubbing compound, which brings to mind its ability to relieve aches and pains. Most prominent is the odor of the hard-working athletes themselves. This sweaty smell represents the many hours spent on gridiron or maple court practicing for perfection. Locating spots in the news are U.S. HISTORY students JACKIE GREENHAM, JAMES McFALLS, and DORA TUCKER. Students facing the complexities of the world today are backed by an understanding of current events, world problems, and federal, state, and local government. In U.S. HISTORY, WORLD HISTORY, CIVICS classes maps, newspapers, film strips are used to illustrate foreign policies, and government functions. 32 The commerce department of SCHS has a personality all its own, with background music composed of the clickety-click of typewriters. Among the courses offered to pre- pare students for the business world are typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, business English, and office practice. Pictured is a Typing I class. Pictured below are first year Home Ec girls preparing to make Christmas Candles. Vocational Home Economics and Agriculture prepare students for jobs in homemaking and farming. Home Economics classes provide courses in foods, personal development, managing time and money, and studying family relationships. The Future Homemakers program embodied in the FHA chapter, is an in- tegral part of the Home Economics course. The Vocational Agriculture Department offers 4 years of training in all farm activities. About 50 per- cent of instruction and training is in the farm shop. The Future Farmers program is so much a part of the course that the two can not be separated. OK, students, let's ,S go back to the third page, second score, starting with the first measure back for rehearsal! Techniques and more techniques, scales upon scales, and then the same song over and over . . . Long hours of work and tedious practice go into the polished pieces the music groups present to their audiences. The standards are high and the work rewarding in prestige for the school and the young musicians and singers.
