The decorations were great, they even had a Scarecrow there as host. A lot of people enjoyed putting their friends and teachers in jail. They even put Mr. Horyna in jail where he was introduced to the sheriff of the dance, Mrs. Welch. Hey Jake, don’t look so surprised, try this dance out for size. Welcome to the 1987 Sadie Hawkins Dance, the host Mr. Scarecrow. 11 Splat! Steph eats the first pie. Dancing: The only full contact sport you can do without using pads. comm 1987 Homecoming was a week of success. Our football team came out on top over Sherman Co. by the score of 41 to 6. Other events of the week were our dress up days. The days ranged from Cowboy and Indians to Heavy Metal. SHS students had great spirit with the seniors winning the spirit stick. They won by having the most participants during the days. The Powder Puff game was a kill-this year. The Juniors and Sophomores had just the right stuff to win, but the casualties were high. The injuries ranged from a black eye to broken fingers. On the lady-like side of things, is our 1987 Homecoming Court. Jenny Clarke as the queen, the princesses were Angie Chavez, Renee Ough, and Amy Himmerich. Our court looked very nice this year. Mr. Danielson served up a hot one in the students vs. faculty volleyball tournament. The faculty and Juniors came out on top. Musical pies was one of the spirit activities. Poor Jenny obviously lost. Nerd day let everyone show their true colors. Here’s one now studying for class. The dance had a good turn out this year. A lot of people showed up and everyone was dressed up nice. They all just lounge field High School. Get any idea of what the around in the morning and wait for the bell to ring, others look like? Life before 8:30 at Stanfield High School can be exciting, if the students are awake enough to know what they are doing. Sometimes students roll in early and play games in the library or others will just sit around and visit with their friends and teachers. Then there are the ones who don’t hit school grounds until the very last minute, then they always have to rush to make it to class on time. Every teacher will have at least one late student a week for their first period class. 26 Among her many duties as secretary, Alida fills out admit slips for the students who were gone from school the previous day. They find a variety of recreational activities to do when they’re not in school. Many enjoy dances that are held at the Pendleton Armory while others like to spend their time cruising the gut of Her-miston. All in all, students enjoy their weekend time to do what they want without the day-to-day routine of books and homework. The boys had a great record of 19 and 3, including district and regional tournament play. When Keith Morgan came to Stanfield, he had a positive attitude of going all the way. This year the Tigers are going to lose four Seniors; Tony Brown, Dusty Grogan, Eric McPherson, and Kevin Bailey. Next year the Tigers are going to be back to go for it all again. Coach Morgan said “we may not have the height we had this year but we can still do it with a couple of changes.” Varsity Scores Stanfield 72 Helix 69 Stanfield 62 Echo 31 Stanfield 70 Burbank 59 Stanfield 68 Heppner 66 Stanfield 72 Echo 45 Stanfield 77 Umatilla 62 Stanfield 82 Echo 37 Stanfield 79 Helix 76 Stanfield 61 Weston-McEwen 53 Stanfield 42 Sherman County 71 Stanfield 66 Riverside 79 Stanfield 70 Heppner 66 Stanfield 66 Pilot Rock 61 Stanfield 75 Umatilla 53 Stanfield 78 Heppner 66 Stanfield 77 Umatilla 48 Stanfield 82 Pilot Rock 73 Stanfield 50 Weston-McEwen 25 Stanfield 63 Wasco County 42 Stanfield 70 Wahtonka 68 District Stanfield 54 Sherman County 73 Stanfield 69 Riverside 59 Regional Stanfield 64 Enterprise 73 J.V. This year the girls were off to a good start in basketball. They really cruised in the first few games until Lindy’s injury in the third game. Lindy was the hot shooter and after Lindy’s injury, it took the girls a while to re-adjust. Towards the end of the season did just that. The girls are going to lose four Seniors this year; Lindy Porfily, Michelle Bradley, Heather Raines, and Gail Kramer. In the third game of the season, Lindy was injured and unable to play for the rest of the season because of torn ligaments in her knee. Of course, she was still a great asset for the team. She still helped out with the girls until the end. Lindy showed up and sat with the team supporting them until the season was over. Even though Lindy was unable to play, nothing was going to stop her from being there. Lindy was also nominated as Honorary Team Captain for the 87-88 district tournament. “Congratulations Lindy!” Mariada George, Cheri Cooper, Tracy Kramer, Shelly Marcum, Valarie Win-borne, Micki Svetich, Teresa Griffin, Coach Derbyshire. The Sweethearts Dance was held that night at the grade school gym due to the High School’s cafeteria was booked up with concessions for the Stanfield Basketball Tournament. The dance turned out to be one of the best dances held in Stanfield for a long time. The reasons are because the decorations were great, it was well-organized, the attendance was high, and everyone had a good time. We also had the Dance-A-Rama Disc Jockey from radio station OK 95 come Heather Raines is in the arms of Arturo Rodelo as one of the many slow tunes play on. For those who don't drive or walk from school, the bus is the only other way, as Life after 3:12 p.m. for Stanfield High School students offers time for a variety of activities. For some, life begins with Detention for 40 minutes, but Saturday School started the last quarter. Now students will have to lose some of their time when they get in trouble in school. Others seek refuge at Jackpot. Here the students can unwind from a hard day at school by playing video arcades, munching down food and drink, or just hang-out. For others, sports takes up most of their time right after school. Practices range from 4:00 p.m. clearn up to 8:30 p.m. for basketball players. Students who do not play sports usually have jobs they must get to as soon as school is out. Students’ jobs range from breaking horses to working at Safeway. So, for the students at Stanfield High School, activities play an important role when school is out. Tammy and Arturo well know! This year's salutatorian was Travis Dunford. He is shown, here giving his speech during graduation. GRADUATION All our years in school we’ve all been waiting for this day: Here we are in our last year, and soon the day will come in May. We started in Kindergarten, thinking, I can’t wait till I’m out of school: Now we made it through all rough long days of education we’re proud to say we’re cool .. . Look at what we struggled through the books, the teachers we haven’t got along with: The english, mathematics that we tried our hardest to inditeth .. The loneliness and happiness, that we shared together: What is this time; the time that this graduating class will cherish forever. We have prepared for this precious moment since first grade on up to this year: Now here we are ready for this world, we’ll go our separate ways, but maybe with one tear. By Lanna Mae Backen A lot of hugging, kissing, and crying took place after the seniors received their diplomas.
