' br 1 N J 'vb' 1 Y ' . .5 . . ww JJEW ffm.. 1 I' MU in 1 'I J r I Q His' :Ja 'vlhbg if' ' n h ,bi I hut' J 'J 511302151 I I I bqvffpl If I C pk, OID 'ff In 1907 a future mnnded publnc was alarmed at the unattractuve gulch beside Stadnum Hrgh School Not only was II unpleasant nn nts own respects but nt also detracted from the archntectqral beautv of the school Its steep sndes and dense forest growth made the gulch the perfect hlde a way for thneves and petty cnmmals Once eun a dead man was found hangxng from a tree Thus xncudent among others stirred the generoslty of Mr W W Seymour a leading cntnzen of Tacoma He offered S10 000 to the clty to be used for any purpose on which the mayors commnttee would decade Through the enthusnasm of the press public pressure was brought upon thus commlttee and the constructnon of a bowl m Old Womans Gulch was declded as a worthy project for the funds Addltnonal money for the completnon of the structure was ransed through subscnptxon drxve carrned on an a large part by the efforts of the young people of the cxty In 1910 the bowl was completed Because of nts near perfect acoustncal condutnons thus outdoor amphntheater became wndely known and was host to many famous personages and events Among those appearung on nts stage were Marshal Foch Allred leader nn World War I Presldent Hardmg and Wnllnam ennmgs Bryan Athletic contests held here included nn then' rosters tradxtxonal football and track heroes Each year thousands of school chnldren gathered here to present thenr annual sprung pageant Throughout the years of its use the Stadium Bowl was mdeed the ccnter of Tacomas cultural and recreatlonal actrvnty 50th Annwersar remmder 0 past era Lookmg 1nto the mm-or of the past, we fmd that stu dents of Tacoma Hlgh School were confronted w1th many of the same problems whlch students at the Brown Castle face today Off1C8fS m student govemment urged payment of the twenty flV6 cents student body mem ershxp fee P1e sales were held 1n su port of vanous club and class functions The paper staff sought artlcles of mterest to add splce to thelr pubhcatlons Many of the act1v1t1es of these erstwhxle students, however, seem strange and forelgn to today's youth A v1tal group of the school was the Cadet Corps, through whlch the boys gamed sknll m marchmg as a group, developed good posture h3bltS, and had the opportunity of buymg a well wearmg umform for only S14 50 Guns for the drllls whxch were held on Tacoma Avenue were furmshed bv the state The r1s1ng cost of llvlng can be noted by exammatlon of the fmanclal records The football team netted S461 40 durmg the 1906 season, wh1le today the athletxc program IS necessarxly supported by the sale of actxvxty tlckets The semor glrls had a balance of S1 10 m thelr treasury, after collectlng dues and havmg a party at a total cost of S2 35 Advertlsement for hngh quahty men's wear of fered shoes for S350 and suxts at S12 314.
