E ,' 1 X Y 4 ig , f Zalsturp s So the structure remained until the autumn of 1898 when a fire mysteriously broke out that was seen even in Olympia and Seattle, leaving ruins which were to stand for six years. By that time, there was no longer the need for such a tourist hotel so far removed from the city center, hut rather the people were crying for another high school. Under the architectural direction of Frederick Heath, the idle ruins were transformed into a castleflike structure, ready for classes in 1906. Taking advantage of what nature had already accomplished, Old WOIHHIIHS Gulch was the setting for the bowl, being paid for hy public subscription. In 1907. the Hrst class was graduated, this year 1947 marking the fortieth anniversary of our school - Stadium. 4

For years we have all heard tales of its origin, but few really know the true history of the ivyfcovered Bastille. Back in 1891 Tacoma's city fathers foresaw this up and coming community as a tourist haven and commercial terminal necessitating an additional hotel. This location proved to be ideal in that it was to have been in the heart of the growing metropo is and was endowed with its superlative view of Commencement Bay. But unfortunately, hard times came along and the project, which was under roof, was abandoned with the windows boarded up.
