By defeating the seniors, Dalwyn Nobles and Babbie York brought debat- ing honors to the junior Class in the form of the school championship and won additional awards in the College of Puget Sound tournament. In the athletic field, Steve Mondau and Bill McGovern were prominent, having been chosen co-captains of next year's football squad. Nh S.f--n L I I f4 ST AT WAR ALL OUT FOR WAR was the sign that hung on the Brown Castle gates this year. Stadions pledged allegiance to their country by enlisting in war preparation courses, by sacrificing time, money and etlort to various drives, and by working in war industries. Above all, students kept their noses within textbooks, for they knew that sound bodies and Well-trained rninds are essentials for victory. 47 lx lb J , EDUCATICN Twice in 25 years Stadium has been at war. Both times boys have left to come back men, Both tirrres established customs have disappeared n er t return again, but this time there is also a ness and a closeness to each individual, d to our very shores, that makes this period unique and challenging. For all of this Stadium has had to abandon its peaceful, Well-ordered curriculum to take an active part in today's life and in so doing has developed a program keyed to the moment but tempered by the discretion of years of experi- ence. Naturally there were nice little things that fell by the wayside--lazy spring days basking in the court, exchanging idle gossip, studying or just sitting, following the teams to Everett or Aberdeen, getting the car every Friday and Saturday night and finally planning to p. g. in spring and start college next September. There's not much time for sunning in the court for boys who run at 2 o'clock to catch a shipyard only bus or girls who have to punch a department store timeclock. Everett and Aber- deen are rather impossible on four gallons a Week-even for the teams themselves, and cars aren't available Friday and Saturday when the gas must last until the next Thursday. P.G.'s, too, are a thing of the past. The army has its finger crooked at many boys almost before they gradue ate, and accelerated courses at college and highf wage defense jobs make the mid-year graduate who stays until lune a rare thing indeed. fAbove leftl Shorthand 4 classes helped prepare B and C gas rationing books. CLeftD Dimout regulations enforced afternoon football. CBelow left? Barbara Reed and Martha Binns headed the monthly drive for tin cans. CBelowJ Spooks haunted the gym when the lunior Red Cross gave its dance Oct, 30. i Y 'ii W PCR VICTORY On the other hand, there were many things we might have lost and didn't. Rather than forget football games for the duration, we held them in the afternoon instead of evening. So as not to strip our school lives of social activities, functions were fewer and farther between, though no less appreciated. True, the ranks of clubs, devoted to anything from fish to international relations, thinned considerably, but the skeleton force that remains can well be the foundation for a more vigorous group in the future. Prosaic, commonplace things assumed places of importance in the Stadium of World War ll. As dimout regulations came, humble tomato cans rose to keep the hall lights within prescribed bounds. Tin cans, topped and flattened, piled up in the front hall the second Thursday of each month. These were sent to salvage centers, ultimately to be reused, thereby saving new metal. Two hundred and fifty pounds of old keys filled with valuable alloys were also collected. This contribution alone constituted nearly one-fourth of the amount salvaged by the entire city. Even old, worn silk stockings, useful in making parachutes, were collected from relatives and rag rug piles. Teachers had additional tasks. Since schools were designated as registration cene ters in sugar and gasoline rationing, faculty members donated time and talent in the library to citizens who waited in long lines for sugar stamps and A cards. In the scholastic field, teachers prepared special pre-induction courses for boys preparing to enter the armed service. These were designed to review and consolidate knowledge in such fields as English, mathematics and science, which would be necessary for spe- cialized courses later on. Transportation problems worked a hardship on classroom procedure too. Conflict with war workers going to and from work made it necessary to dismiss school at 2, an hour earlier. Short periods were found unsatisfactory in the fall semester, so one was simply dropped. This time had to be made up in the classroom and in outside study periods. A new corps of watchmen was organized for air raid drills which sent students scurrying into the halls or under desks. These workers, appointed by the Student Council, included hall patrol and calculation of the number of students on each beat among their duties. . School organizations played their part in Stadium at War and conspicuous among these was Iunior Hi-Y. Functioning for the first time this year, having been organized last October, it performed a valuable service in making successful the sale of war bonds and stamps. CBelow leftl Mary lean Heidinger and Florence fBelow rightl Iunior Hi-Y launched a Guthrie, co-chairmen, are pleased at the success novel bond and stamp campaign in the of the Girls' Club key drive. X H1 fpring. 49 RAY PAYNE IOHN DRAKE DUVAL WISEMAN President Vice President Secretary BOYS' COUNCIL The Boys' Club, organized this year as a result of a vote taken among the male population of Stadium, was fortunate in having as its president of Iohn Drake, vice presidentg Duval Wiseman, secretary, an Bob Olson treasurer, succeeded in getting the organization off to a fine star, assuring its perpetration for coming years. capable, friendly Ray Payne. Under his guidance the club cabinet, coiI I ii d g-Dmk Burma Lyle Lane and Tom Nelsen, representing the Sophomore, Iunior and genior Classes, respectively, were appointed by the officers to draw up a constitution. The finished document provided for five commission- ers on the Boys' Council. Each was to appoint boys under him who would form sub-committees. The athletic commission was headed by Iohn Prechek. lts prime purpose is to get more interested in both intramural and interscholastic sports. To develop more school spirit and pep is the aim of the morale commis- sion, of which Bill Demastus was leader. This department decreed every Wednesday to be bow-tie day at which time all males were to Wear their loudest and oddest cravats. A fine boys' assembly Was held in April and others were being planned by this group. George Thomas was chosen to direct the social commission, which is to have charge of dances, stag parties and other entertainment. The public relations department headed by Iohn Hampton is to have charge of presenting the club's activities to the public by means of The World, assemblies and so forth. Giving the const check-up are Ray Payne, Duval Wiseman, yle Lane and Tom Nelsen. 50 i HCDNGR ACTIVITIES A fundamental truth of a democracy is that a few with ability and talent rise to govern the common people. From nearly two thou- sand individuals at Stadium come student leaders, each capable and competent in his own field. To attain the top in any activity requires that the student spend time perfect- ing his talents, studying diligently and cooper- ating wholeheartedly with others. 51 x -P nf-y,lA A A J' .1-c,g ' 5-' .Jf 5 -I ,I ,,, I HNG HO LING Valedictoriun ALICE ANN BE Vuledicto i EVELYN L. Guest speakers participated for the first time in Commencement cere- monies this year. Mrs. Buena Maris, dean of women at Oregon State College, addressed the graduating class. Usually, four students, the valedictorian, the salutatorian, one chosen by the faculty and one chosen by the Senior Class are speakers. This spring, after an interval of three years during which no senior qualified, the Columbia University scholarship was awarded to a Stadium boy, Arthur Wickstrom. Having an over-all value of 52000, the scholarship allows S500 a year during four years of satisfactory work. High scholarship, good character and financial ability are deciding factors after a competitive test has been completed satisfactorily. Only eight graduates have received this honor in the l3 years it has been offered. Arthur took part in school activities, having been on the senior honor roll, a study hall assistant, an activity manager, a moving picture projector operator and a member of Camera, Science and Ski Clubs. Prominent in this group was the twenty-fourth winner of the Richard Graff memorial award, Gerald Bell. His name was engraved on the cup presented to Stadium in 1919 by Dr. and Mrs. Marc W. Graff, in recognition of the highest ideals of sportsmanship and outstanding scholastic achieve- ment. Besides being co-captain of the varsity track team, Gerald played both junior and midget football, was a member of Debate Club and belonged to Hi-Y. Most representative citizen for the school was Ianice Lindeman, to whom was given the Veterans of Foreign Wars Citizenship award. Student government filled much time for Ianice, who served as president and service department chairman for the Girls' Club and secretary of the Sophomore Class. She participated in journalism, music, athletics, Red Cross and Triple S also, As faculty choice for commencement speaker, she reached a climax in her high school achievements. Ianet Ferris was the second winner of the new Phil and Grace Garland music award. This is bestowed upon the senior who has contributed the most to the musical life of Stadium. Leadership, citizenship, scholarship and capability are qualities necessary in the one chosen to have his name en- graved on the plaque. janet accompanied both the Boys' and Girls' Glee Clubs besides playing for the operas and for many soloists. Long and exceptional service on school publications brought the journal- ism award to Gordon Baker, whose name was engraved on the Central lnter-scholastic Press Association cup won by The World in 1924. Gordon served not only as editor of The World, but also as editor of The Torch, a member of the Tahoma staff, president of Fourth Estate, as a member of Quill and Scroll and won top recognition in a national newswriting contest. The Bausch and Lomb medal, given to the student showing the most promise in the field of scientific research, went to james Wiborg, as did the Rotary award of SlUU. Stuart Gaul won the Reed College scholarship, and Ursella Watts was awarded half of her tuition at the College of Puget Sound for four years. The Student Council appointed 16 boys and 8 girls, and 25 others were chosen from key rooms throughout the building. The news was well- covered, however, and the official newspaper of the Brown Castle continued to be Easy to Read and Worth Reading. Virginia Lochow headed the staff of 31 members as editor in chief with the help of Assistant Editor Iuliana Ray. Highlights of the feature page were Mirandy Strutz's entries in her diary, written by Mary-Anna Schenckg Sun Dial, authored by the combined efforts of Feature Editor Mardie DeMille and Iuliana Ray, and lack Watson's jingling of Iester's Bells. Castle Life Portraits contained no silhouettes and few cuts were used as linoleum was hard to obtain and the staff had no clever linoleum block artist. Old cuts on file were used as cartoons and holiday greetings. Tiger Tales were related by Sports Editor Paul Benson, while Lorraine Danell covered girls' sports and wrote Diana Shorts. Business and circulation managers were Pauline Healy and Mary-Anna Schenclc, respectively. Marjorie Van Olinda supervised the nine advertising solicitors as ad manager. Third place in Cross-State competition was claimed by the Royals with four wins and two losses. One tie and one defeat was encountered by the squad in non-league play with Lincolnand Aberdeen. By virtue of the decisive defeat of Everett, 7 - U, Stadium shared top-spot honors with the Gulls until the Thanksgiving Day game with Lincoln when the Blue and Gold dream of a league title was riddled by the l3 - O defeat at the hands of the Abes. The Castlites and the South End Lynx opened the season with a hard-fought game which ended in a scoreless tie. Several scoring threats were made by both teams but neither could chalk up any touchdowns. Power and speed were on the side of the Aberdeen Bobcats when the Tigers tangled with the Grays Harbor eleven and came out on the bottom of a 13-O score. Magnificent ball-carrying by Duv Wiseman kept the 'Cats from running up any more points. A sneak reverse and an intercepted pass led to both Bobcat tallies. After 48 minutes of brilliant play, the Bengals defeated the Blue Satans from Walla Walla, 7 - U, in the first regular Cross-State tilt in the bowl. Bob Gibson, all-around backfield man, heaved a 37-yard pass into the waiting arms of right end Bob Nelson during the second COACH HEINRICK period for six points, while Ralph Baker successfully booted the ball over the crossbar. Again proving to be a jinx for the Castlites, the Bellingham Red Raiders garnered l9 points to Stadiums 14 before the final gun sounded. Fullback Paul Iacobson starred for the home team while Walt Richardson was outstanding for the Raiders. Yakima was the only night game played by the Bengals as the Yaks are CHUCK FAIN CO-CAPT. PAUL IACOBSON BOB NELSON BOB COLLINS BILL MCGOVERN 90 FCCTBALL far enough inland to allow a game to be played under the lights. The Tigers sunk the Pirates, 21-6, with Chuck Pain reeling off the first score. Duv Wiseman flashed over the stripe in the third quarter after a 61 yard drive and fullback Steve Mondau plowed into the end zone for the final tally. Ralph Baker kicked the three conversions. The Seattle Prep Panthers, playing host to the Royals in the Queen City, couldn't hold down the Tiger scoring wave that literally ground them into the mud. Chuck Pain scored the first touchdown only a few minutes after the opening gun and the second quarter saw Ray Payne snag a pass by him and scamper into paydirt. lack MacDonald and Don Briggs accounted for the other two touch- downs while Baker toed three out of the four conversions across the uprights. Chalking up a 20- 7 win over the Bellarmine Lions, the Royals claimed their only city league win of the year. A backfield double- pass play by the Bells was good for their only touchdown. A confident Seagull eleven came down from Everett on Armistice day to do battle with an underdog Bengal grid squad but when the final gun sounded, a cheer rose from the Tiger rooters indicating that wa the Castlemen had vanquished the league leaders, 7-U. Everett dominated the first half but HC.hllC.lLl '... licirdashed over to score early in the fourth period and again Baker converted. ln a game that might have been more successfully played with rowboats and water wings, the Lincoln Railsplitters defeated Stadium Tigers l3 - O for the first time in a decade. The game was a heart-breaker for all Bengal rooters as the loss of the city championship was involved. Fumbles cost the home squad both touchdowns. The Bengals were definitely playing a weak game while the Abes showed plenty of precision and power. IOHN PRECHEK ,Qc Ioe Boyle and Paul Iacobson cap- tained the 1942 squad while Bill McGov- ern and Steve Mondau were chosen to lead next year's grid eleven. SOPHCDMCRE EGGTBALL Showing definite promise of producing several future varsity football stars, the sophomore team, coached this year by Mr. Angelel, physical educa- tion director at Mason Iunior High School, ended its season with one win, four losses and a tie. The sophs did well against Lincoln in their first game, finishing in a scoreless tie, but did not break into the win column until they downed the Puyallup Vikings l8-O in their last contest. The Viks had previously edged out the yearlings, l3-8, Selected as co-captains were Marshall Watland and Stan Langlow, while Orvis Harrelson was voted the inspirational award at their banquet in lanuary. 94 4 I COACHES Helping Don and Anna Stadion to keep physically fit in mind as well as body is the duty performed by the Castle's coaching staff. Mr. Lowman had charge of varsity and reserve basket- ball and reserve football, while Mr. Angelel coached sophomore football and basketball as well as varsity track, replacing Mr. Christie. Tennis and golf were headed by Mr, Epstein and Mr. Swarm, respectively, while Mr, O'Neel capably oversaw swimming and wrestling. Owing to the ruling of the city superintendent, the rifle team, coached by Mr. Giltner, was inactive. Mr. Palmer continued as head of first aid and the equipment room. Girls' sports were led by Miss Bernard and Mrs. Sowell. MANAGERS Long hours of work are put in by the boys whose chief duty it is to care for athletic equipment. The Tigers gained fourth place in Cross-State League play with 4 wins and 6 losses, defeating Seattle Prep twice, splitting with Everett and Bellingham, and losing two each to Brem- erton and Lincoln, Due to transportation difficulties, there were no meetings with the two eastern teams, Walla Walla and Yakima, this year. In their first encounter with the Everett Seagulls, the Royals traveled to the northern city only to come limping home with a 24-31 defeat, but when the time came for the Bengal five to play host to the Gulls, the Castlites unleashed a scoring barrage that left them flatfooted. Both Bay Payne and Bob Fincham were in excellent form that night, garnering a large number of the 48 tallies against 28 for Everett. Besides their regular schedule, the Bengals played seven practice tilts with Eatonville, Sumner, Olympia, Clover Park, Puyallup and Buckley, losing only to the Sumner Spartans, 30-34. Sumner came back, however, to defeat the Bengals by one point in a thrilling game. Outstanding scorer for the team was Charles Stewart, who was promoted to a regular varsity position near the end of the season. SQPHOMORE BASKETBALL Coming through the season with only two defeats, the sophomore basket- ball squad succeeded in tying Lincoln for the yearling title in a closely contended race. The Tigers won two and lost two in competition with the Bailsplitters and carried over into two overtimes in their final combat. Bellarmine, Clover Park, Puyallup and the Stadium Hi-Y also were defeated by the sophs, the Bells four times. Many of last year's regular performers were back including Dick Greco, Frank Bonaro, and Ralph Baker, all two-year veterans, and Gene Clough, Cecil Stone, Walt Rockway, Bob Olson and Bob Gibson, all one-year lettermen. These players plus many reserves gave Coach Heinrick one of the most experienced and well rounded ball teams the Castle has seen in several years. ln their opening game, the batsmen subdued Kapowsin, 4-2 and ll-l, in a double-header played at Athletic Park, April l2. The first contest featured the fine pitching of Gene Clough who allowed the Loggers only 5 hits to 8 for Stadium. Dick Greco was really hot in the nightcap, hurling a no-hit game. He struck out 10 and Walked only 3. Greco and ,Captain Bananas Bonaro were the hitting stars in these two 7 inning encounters. Seattle Prep fell twice to the Royals by the scores of 7-2 and 10-4 in a double-header played in Seattle, April 16. It was the first Cross-State League competition of the season for both teams. On the mound in the opener was Gene Clough, who by way of a 3 hit performance won his second game. His mates succeeded in collecting 9 bingles off the opposing pitcher. Rookie Bill Funk turned in a remarkable relief job in the second game. Replacing Greco, who hit one of his wild streaks in the sixth inning, Funk set the Panthers down in order after the score had been knotted at 4-all and the bases were loaded. He fanned all nine batters that faced him. After neither team had scored in the seventh the Tigers pushed across 6 runs in the eighth for their margin of victory. , The Bengal bat barrage was led by Bonaroffsfnd Clough in the first con test and by Greco and Cecil Stone in the nightcap. VARSITY TRACK Flashing off to an excellent start, the 1943 thinclad team has proved its mettle with a record of four spectacular wins and no losses at the time this publication went to press. Centralia was the Tiger's first victim and went down, 58-55. Co-captain Duval Wiseman shone with two first places for a high score total of 11114 points while Charles Pain took both the discus and shot events. Despite a heavy rainstorm Bengal cindermen remained unbeaten as they thoroughly trounced a strong Clover Park team, 77112 to 35112. Nine firsts were garnered by the squad on the sloppy track and Wiseman again came through for top scoring honors of the day with 16114 points. Next to be vanquished by the home squad was the Auburn cindermen in a lop-sided meet which ran 83 213 to 29 113. Of the 13 events held the blue and gold accounted for 12 of them, the 440 yard dash being the only first place event for the boys from Auburn. Between them Duv Wiseman and Charles Pain amassed 55112 points in the Royal's two wins over the Clover Park Warriors and Auburn. Wiseman led the field with 16114 points in the Auburn fray. Bettering his Clover Park mark by several feet Pain hurled the discus 137 feet 3314 inches. Here they were obliged to take third place as a result of the lack of second- and third-place Winners to back up the first places. Lincoln took first place with 51 points while Aberdeen nosed out the Tigers, 43-41, for second place. The squad took two meets from Lincoln, Aberdeen and Everett. A strong U. of W. frosh squad was also submerged by the Royals 33-31, in a thrilling meet held in the home pool. Ioe Boyle was again the outstanding performer for the Tigers, defegting all his opponents plus earning the most points for his team. At the confergqe meet in the U pool he broke his own record in the 220 with a flashing 2124.2 The relay team was not defeated all season. ln its ranks were Ron Aubry, Bill Brasier, Ioe Boyle and Bob Morton. Morton, having joined the army, was later replaced by Don Diamond. Dale Murray came through with a first place in the diving division at the state contest, While Brasier copped the IUU-yard free-style, swimming his fastest race of the season. Many boys turned out, and the two matches the grapplers had here were well attended. This was not the case for most of the other afternoon sports. The grunt and groaners had a fairly good season, winning two and losing two. Mr. O'Nee1 oversaw the boys, assisted by two student coaches, Charles Isaacs and Russ Keyes. In their first match with Lincoln, Ian. 27, the Stadium team went down to defeat, 20-13. Encouraging highlights of this contest were the victories of Dave Houston at 115 pounds and of Russ Keyes, heavyweight, who threw his man in 1:56. Despite the loss of Isaacs, who was out with an ear infection, the matmen, otherwise in good shape, came back to defeat Fife in a match there Feb. 9, 24-13. They showed definite improvement and seemed to have gained much from their experiences in the Abe encounter. Dave Houston, Armand Yapa- chino, Kenny Iohnson and two newcomers, Dave I-Iurlow and Bob Mann, looked good in winning their contests. Russ Keyes, who was acting student coach, continued chalking up victories by pinning his opponent in 1:55. At Lincoln on Feb. 18 the Lynx again proved too powerful and by winning 231f2-15112, retained possession of the Cammarano wrestling trophy. The Tigers fought hard but were again less experienced. Russ Keyes by winning in 47 seconds scored the fastest fall of the season. In their last match of the season with Fife on March 3 here, the grapplers again defeated the Trojans, this time by the impressive score of 26-15. The Tigers went into the contest with a 10-point advantage because of forfeits BOB COLLINS BILL PLUMMER IIM CLINTON BOB MANN 106 3 WRESTLING and were ahead throughout the contest. Enlightening were the victories of Bill Plummer, Iim Clinton and Captain Bob Collins, who won by a fall. Armand Yapachino, by displacing his opponents ribs when he threw him, won his match in 4:09 and received the distinction of being the only bone- crusher on the Royal squad. At their banquet at Kittridge Hall in April the matmen voted Russell Keyes the Paul Walker trophy for being an inspiration to the team. Armand Yapa- chino was chosen student coach for next season While Bob Mann was voted to captain the squad. CHARLES ISAACS ARMAN D YAPACHINO RUSSELL KEYES ENNY IOHNSON DAVE HOUSTON DAVE HURLOW After their season was over several of the grapplers, perhaps yearning for the feel of the mat, turned over to boxing. Russ Keyes, with the help of Roy Cloninger, former boxing instructor at Amarillo CTexasJ High School, organized a highly successful smoker in April, which was well attended and netted 65 dollars for the Red Cross. ln the main event Iohn Prechek won a decision over Chuck Pain. Three of the foregoing bouts had been technical knockouts. These included lim Cooksie over Duval Wiseman, Ralph Baker over Lyman Burk, and Gordon Reid over Norman Iacobson. Gordon Andreasens decision over Don Eshelman and Russ Keyes' decision over Gene Rettke were among the best of the contests. l07 lovlinny' 2: Paul Gingrich fmgrl, Kenny Iohnson, Clyde Melendy, Julius Marrnaccr, Bill Punter, Buss Keyes, Armand Yapachino,..lim Clin on. RESERVE WRESTLING The reserve wrestling team, composed mostly of 'lgreen men, was defeated by Lincoln's seconds, 25-15, early in February on the Abes' mat. Since a return match with the Lynx was postponed, this was the only contest. However, it was marked by many falls and much valuable experience was gained which will help to place many of these boys on next years -varsity squad. The reserves were also coached by Mr. O'Neel, with the assistance of Charles Isaacs and Russell Keyes. INTRAMURAL So that boys who are unable to compete in interscholastic athletics could participate in sports, a fine intramural program was carried out. Under the direction of Mr. O'Neel and Mr. Palmer, gym teachers, competition was offered in archery, apparatus, badminton, basketball, boxing, horseshoes, ping-pong, swimming, tennis, track, tumbling and wrestling. Any boy may engage in any sport provided he has not earned a letter in that particular field. Many gained valuable experience in this Way and later turned out for interscholastic athletics. Winners in each sport are privileged to Wear an emblem, a shield with the letters SHS and a symbol of their sport on it. This is seen on the right sleeve, 108 U PIN WINNERS The highest award presented by the girls' athletic department at Stadium is a gold pin, symbolizing three years of active participation in the sports program. HIKE LEADERS Rain or shine, enthusiastic Dianas rise with the birds to attend the 12 hikes held during the tall and spring. To lead these jaunts, which are usually held on Saturday mornings, 24 senior girls are chosen by the Stadiana cabinet and the gym instructor.
