IHP IAHOMA l that night in her bedroom ean had a little talk with her reflection in the mirror She looked worried and tears were in her 4-543 Oh what shall l do3 she whispered frantically ve otten mysclf in the awfullest mess imaginable simply to be popular' Uh wouldnt it be terrible rf that picture l bought at the photo grapher s wi rea y someone s picture and if the girls find out lve been Qendin candy ind flowers to myself lll die Mother hasnt mi ed her diamond yet but when she does what shall l do3 linxllv xfter turning the problem over in her mind she decided there were only two way-. out of it one to have a quarrel with uk and break the engagement or else to haxe him killed die some wiy Then suddenly she decided to do both' The following Monday when she went to school her face was set sternly ind she wxs pale The girls soon learned that her en gagement had been broken during acks visit over the week end md he had left for ltaly The girls all sympathized with ean and exen her enemies were moved by her apparent grief But two days later when ean appeared at school with a small newspaper clipping stating that a young man by the name of ack Willer had committed suicide he had Jumped from a small boat into the water in New York harbor and been drowned the atten tion mf the boys and girls wxs once more riveted on ean and she a mm actually committed surclde because she refused to marry him 'No one stopped to think th xt eans father was the owner of the evening paper and that ean could set type extremely well Xt the end of the month just before the gummer Ball ean s brother announced that he was bringing home a fraternity brother of his who wanted to meet her and take her to the Ball ean did not see the boys until just before they started for the dance As he entered the room she saw her brother talking to a young man with a vivid shock of red hair Oh jean her brother aid this 1 ohn Miller a good friend of mine l think you ll get along lick together and he rushed out cf the room adding that he would bring the car around in front ean looked up and met a pair of smiling blue eyes l sup pose he sud faintly that people call you ack ack lvliller 5 Oh no never everyone always calls me Red he told her 'Wo one ex er has called me ack But you can if you want to h rdded O l like Red e e so much better she assure him hastily Xve that is nice Red Continued lm glad you like t f r omethm tells me you ll hear it mighty frequently in the future' At woman with a past ,lean murmured quietly What 1 it3 Red asked Why ,lean smiled lm glad lve met you xt last Y' l ii 21 iut .2 if .
