The english department took n a fresh appearance this year ith the new head of the de- artment, Mr. Mike Gonzalez. e is a man of great knowl- dge and has an uncommon nack of relating to his stu- ents. His teaching method is hat of compromise. He doesn't ome down to the students level or does he expect the students o come up to his. On the con- rary, it is a very mutual thing n which both sides give until hey both hit the middle, then oth are happy and new doors f learning and maturity are pened. Another one of Mr. onzalez's many good points s his willingness to help the tudents with extra curricular ctivities. He never seems to ind to give his time to help he students. Whether Mr. Gon- realizes it or not he has, his sincerity and concern a great deal of respect the eyes of his students inside out of class. 5 ,qvv ' ' ,31Nf-- 3 l ri KY .Jef

In Sister Bernard's chemistry class, a student learns more than mere formulas and equa- tions. He is being trained, ever so subtly, to search and ex- amine, to investigate and evalu- ate in a systematic way. To train a student's mind in this subtler way requires an instruc- tor of superior quality, one who understands the principles and the goals of education, and one who can make those goals come alive for students. During her five years of teaching chemis- try at St. Vincent's, Sister Ber- nard has never failed to instill in her students and in those around her the desire and the ability to strive for that higher level of understanding that en- lightens the human spirit.
