ii ifenfyins i gfj icfyool Houfe 2. Box 150 fjickory, jRTorih, Carolina 2S6Q1 U®um£ Dr. Emmett Floyd converses with area ICT advisor and students. The last beach trip ... a hurried weekend at the World’s Fair... the beginning of football and cheerleading practices... the displays of notebooks, paper, pens, and school clothes... the approach of late August.. .all sig- naled an end to summer vacation and for most, the all-too-soon arrival of the 1982-1983 school year. Fall found St. Stephens High School and its Indians “marching to the beat of a different drummer.” Upon the departure of retired Principal Charles Bost, former Bunker Hill High Principal Glenn Barger traded in his “Bears” for the mighty Indians. After ten years of loyal, dedicated service to BHHS and its outstanding community, Mr. Barger dedicated to become chief to the hunters instead of the hunted. This change, as well as the May introduction of new Superintendent Dr. Emmett Floyd, caused the students, faculty, and community to begin the new year with new policies, ideas, and loyalties. The tentativeness and anxiety which resulted from this new administration were soon replaced with enthusi- asm and a desire to succeed because as Mr. Barger pointed out, “We are remembered for our successes, not our failures.” Seniors who at first grumbled because the exam exemption privilege had been modified became proud to receive the right to have honor study halls and to be treated with a special act of respect as underclassmen stood quietly when seniors entered assemblies. As students became increasingly aware that they were liked and respected by the administration and staff, they appeared not only to accept the change but to treat the year for what it was — a fresh new beginning, a new challenge, a new trail to be explored. Superintendent Floyd serves himself at area reception. 2 Theme Dr. Emmett Floyd and Mr. Glenn Barger watch as Tammy Shook displays art work chosen for the “Superintendent’s Award.” Theme 3 E 1982 WORLDS FAIR Finalists await the judges’ decision on who will be crowned Miss St. Stephens 1982. The judges ponder their tabulations in making their final deci- sions. The annual Miss St. Stephens Pageant began once again with the Grand March of the 58 lovely contes- tants who were chosen from homerooms, clubs, and other organizations. The pageant itself progressed smoothly, especially with the aid of the experienced pageant director, Mrs. Violet Kale. After viewing each contestant’s poise, personality, grace, and overall appearance, the judges completed the tedious job of choosing ten finalists. With the competition narrowed to ten, they then completed the even more difficult task of selecting the final three. Second runner-up was Kathy Good; first run- ner-up, Jennifer Taylor; and Miss St. Stephens 1982, Kim Starnes. Selected as Miss Congeniality was Lau- rie Dunton. Miss St. Stephens Kim Starnes CLASS OF 1985 Miss St. Stephens 1982 and her court — Jennifer Taylor, first runner up; Kathy Good, second runner up — pose after an evening of excitement. Mrs. Violet Kale presents the Miss Congeniality trophy to Laurie Dunton. 8 Miss St. Stephens SWEEPS TITLES Jamey Young takes his victory walk after being crowned Mr. St. Stephens 1982. Mr. Congeniality, Bobby Burton, proves that blondes have more fun. The 1982 Mr. St. Stephens “Centerfold Pageant’’ was the comedy event of the year. Over 30 young men from clubs and homerooms were selected to “show their stuff,” first as mildmannered men in suits and then as flashy “centerfolds.” Selected by the judges were Jamey Young, Mr. St. Stephen? 1982; Pete Lail, first runner up; and Steve Noble, second runner up. Voted Mr. Congeniality by his fellow contestants was Bobby Burton. Steve Noble introduces himself during the first round of competi- tion. u Contestants await the final judging. Mr. St. Stephens 9 “NIGHTS ON BROADWAY” Prom night found SSHS juniors and seniors and their dates arriving at a beautifully transformed gymnasium decorated to enhance the theme “Nights on Broadway. Those usually clad in jeans and sweatshirts were dressed in feminine formats and tai- lored tuxedos. While the rested, relaxed seniors enjoyed dancing to the music of “Hokus Pokus, many juniors tried to forget that only a few short hours earlier they had been harriedly completing last min- ute preparations for the memorable gala. The waiters and waitresses, busy serving “Manhattan Mush- rooms,” “Broadway Barrel of Cheese, and other such delicacies to upperclassmen, remembered the thrill and honor of being se- lected to serve and thus to attend as sophomores a special event. They also thought of the anxiety attacks they experienced while practicing their dance, choreographed by Beth Cline and Donna Dagenhardt. Community members Mrs. Rita McBride and Mr. Leonard Godfrey relaxed as they proudly admired the decorations which they helped prepare. Assisting once again because “I enjoy work- ing with these kids, Mrs. McBride stressed that she had only to answer questions and supervise due to the leadership, creativity, and hard work of junior officers Beth Haas and Brandi Maye, as well as that of their classmates. Faculty members Mrs. Donna Maye and Ms. Deb Wakefield, along with other junior homeroom teachers, also contributed to the success of the evening. The trip to Broadway was entertaining and enjoyable for the hosting junior class and the honored guests — the seniors. Facul- ty members and parents chaperoned a well-behaved group and even joined the festivities. Good style and technique is shown as the waitresses and waiters dance to “New York, New York.” Student Body President crowns Lynn Lytle 1982 Prom Queen. On June 4, the class of 1982 entered the gym one last time as seniors for the culmination of their four years at St. Stephens High School. The commencement exercise began with the intro- duction of Reverend B. Dale Watts, a 1974 graduate of St. Stephens High School who then delivered the bac- calaureate to the graduates and their guests. Assis- tant Principal Ed Tollman then presented special awards and announced scholarship recipients. After Salutatorian Susan Norman spoke, a slide presenta- tion was shown to the graduates to remind them of all the memorable times they had experienced at SSHS. Finally the moment everyone had waited for ar- rived as Principal Charles J. Bost presented the di- plomas. The graduates experienced mixed feelings of joy and sorrow as they accepted their diplomas. Emo- tions continued to rise as Valedictorian Lisa Phillips addressed the graduates. As the Marching Indians played “Pomp and Cir- cumstance,” the class of 1982 changed their tassels from one side to the other and departed from the gym not as seniors, but as 1982 graduates of St. Stephens High School. Senior Class President Lynn Lytle, on behalf of the graduates, presents retiring Principal Charles J. Bost with a mortarboard and proclaims him to be an important part of the Class of 1982. 12 Graduation FINAL STEP Susan Norman, earning the honor of First Row: A. Burton, B. Haas, K. Dunn, B. Maye, L. Graduation 13 INDIANS CELEBRATE 1982 HOMECOMING “FLYING ” An abundance of brightly colored balloons and a crisp October wind helped students, alumni, parents, and other community members celebrate Homecoming 1982 with its student-chosen theme “.Flying High.’’ During half-time of the SSHS-Wilkes Central game, football captain Donald Godfrey crowned Melanie Tollman homecoming queen for which she was voted by her senior classmates. Mascots Holly Norris and Josh Simmons participated in the festivities as well as representatives of senior football players, class represen- tatives, and their escorts. Representing the senior class were Aun- drea Reese, Laurie Dunton, and Jackie Miller. Debbie Hollar and Dana Ochs represented the junior class; Margaret Frank and Kim Starnes, the sophomore class; and Paige Evans and Aundrea Poo- vey, the freshmen class. The SSHS Marching Indians also joined the festivities and showed school pride by sporting colorful bal- loons on their instruments. The half-time program was an exciting conclusion to a busy week of homecoming-related activities. Many students showed their school spirit by appropriately wearing red and white cloth- ing on Red and White Day.” To have fun, many students later deviated from their normal dress to show their preferences on Punk versus Preppie Day.” The week also found many areas of the school creatively deco- rated by the students. The junior class won the Spirit Wall” contest with their artistic venture displayed in the cafeteria, and Mr. Ken Weaver’s sophomore homeroom won the door decorating contest with its Indian-supporting theme. An “Indian Day homecoming assembly was held Friday dur- ing which each class presented a skit to demonstrate their sup- port and the junior varsity cheerleaders led the Indians in cheers to boost spirit. H STSWHENSl YOUTH ARE EXPOSED TO FRENCH CULTURE Notre Dame, a beautiful cathedral, is a popular tourist attraction. On June 22,1982, nine students and their chaperone, Mrs. Vickie Burleson, began their nine-day adventure in Paris, France. Throughtout their stay, they saw famous attractions such as the French Riviera, Monte Carlo, and ruins from the time of the Ro- man Empire. The students also enjoyed sampling many new kinds of food. French pastries and ice cream were among their favor- ites. Much shopping was done, too, with the travelers bringing home all kinds of odds-and-ends, including perfumes, wines, clothes, and crystal. The Harbor of Monaco provides a scenic view. The gardens at Versailles draw many tourists each year. Students pose in front of the well- known Eiffel Tower. Nimes, ancient Roman ruins, is a favorite sight-seeing spot of the students. Foreign Travel 17 READERS THEATRE ENHANCES Under the leadership of drama teacher Ms. Deb Wake- field, talented students participated in the holiday pro- duction of two Christmas-oriented plays done in the style of Reader’s Theatre. In Reader’s Theatre the players are the book and the audience is the reader. Actors appropri- ately had scripts in hand as they made the stories come alive for the attentive spectators. No scenery is used, but the actors wear costumes and make-up. In The Nutcracker, written by Patricia Clapp, Clara (Mary Poynter) receives a wooden nutcracker from her Godfather Dross (Jack Russell). She dreams that the toy actually is alive and fights with the Mouse King (Danny Sparks) to regain the crown for his land. As 1 '.lara’s dream ends, intriqued audience members watch as she awakes and finds the nutcracker gone. Godfather Dross appears with Ned (Reggie Helton), a godson who looks like the Nutcracker Prince. The cruel toymaker (Fred Wallen) refuses to let anyone buy his dolls because he wants to keep them forever in “The Toys Take Over Christmas.” The dolls, led by Sunny (Debbie Parker), find magic hearts which make them feel like real people. They capture the toymaker and Collette, his loyal doll (Karen Readling). Santa Claus (Todd Cook) appears and promises to give the dolls to children for Christmas. With an uplifting ending, the dolls vote to give Collette a heart to make her nicer. Santa warms the Toy- maker’s heart back to life, and he joins Santa in helping children everywhere to be happier at Christmas. Lisa Hitaffer is an entrance guard in the kingdom. The toymaker (Fred Wallen) watches his toys dance. The Nutcraker (Reggie Helton) comes alive for Clara (Mary Poynter). Santa Claus (Todd Cook) waits for his cue. 18 Play CHRISTMAS MOOD Debbie Parker displays her talent in “The Toys Take Over Christ- mas.” Amy Triplett glances at her lines during the performance of The Nutcracker.” The toy soldiers (Johnny Gantt, Scott Hannah, and Scott Houston) stand at attention for the toymaker. Although course offerings are not as extensive, students have a variety of classes to take in order to earn the required 18 units. They are able to work full-time in a day job while completing classes in the evening. They also have numerous activi- ties throughout the year which stress the need for main- taining a purposeful life while developing the ability to work well with others. Throughout the year staff members geared activities so students learned to respect the dignity of work and gained leadership knowledge in educational, vocation- al, civic, recreational, and social events. Students par- ticipated in a formal induction ceremony of club officers after campaigning and voting occurred, and class mem- bers prepared a booth displayed at the Catawba County Fair. A Halloween party was held with Mr. Glenn Barger and Mr. Steve Hilton as judges of the costumes, and a Thanksgiving dinner prepared by the food services class was served prior to a program on the meaning of the holiday. Students sponsored a Christmas party for chil- dren in the Receiving Home in Hickory and also for those in the Social Services Cottages in Newton, com- plete with a guest appearance by ’ole St. Nick. They also went Christmas caroling at the N.C. Lutheran Home and took gifts for the residents. Students partici- pated in monthly birthday parties held in honor of stu- dents and staff, and they took field trips to Lenoir- Rhyne College to see such Playmaker productions as The Wool Gatherer. With the departure of Mr. Robert Whisnant, who left to become Extended Day Coordinator at Foard High School, and Ms. Glenda Hefner, who won a teaching assistantship while completing her Master's degree at ASU, Mr. Marcus Rowe was hired to teach classes in social studies and physical science. Mr. Jerry Good- night also began teaching art to evening students in addition to his day classes. Students learn and practice to improve typing skills. However, they ended the season by beating the Alexander Central Cougars, who tied with West Caldwell for the confer- ence championship. Speaking of the team’s strong and weak points, Head Coach Marty Curtis explained, “Their main strength was in the passing game, and they possessed the positive attitude that they could win every game they played. An inexperienced defense consisting al- most entirely of underclassmen was the main weak- ness, although a lack of depth was also evident. Aided by assistant coaches Ed Klinck, Ken Weaver, Rick Stallings, Chris Rose, and Jim Wood- ruff, Mr. Curtis strived throughout the season to not only improve the players’ fundamental skills but also to help them develop character and to teach them how to sacrifice their individual goals for the good of the team. Of his Varsity Indians Coach Curtis commented, “The season was disappointing from the standpoint of wins and losses, but I found that athletes at Saint Stephens High School have a lot of pride and will always bounce back from adversity and never, never quit. ” Receiving awards at the Fall Athletic Banquet were the following: Outstanding Defensive Back and Team-Before-Self, Tripp Burns; Outstanding Defen- sive Lineman, Scott Killian; Outstanding Offensive Back, Matt Klenke; Outstanding Offensive Lineman and the Golden Helmet Award, team captain Donald Godfrey (who in three years never missed a game or a practice); Most Improved, Nick Pollard; and Most Valuable, Brad McNeely. PLAYERS IMPROVE Although experiencing a disappointing season in terms of wins and losses, the J. V. Indians ... im- proved fundamentally, which is what we wanted to do. We lost some very close games, and with a break or two, could have had a fine year,”stated Coach Marty Curtis. He added that since the players had gained experience, next year's football program would hope- fully be more successful. LADIES AND NEW COACH The 1982 Volleyball team had an overall record of 6-7 and a record of 5-5 in the conference. The team was young with only three seniors and three juniors. According to Coach Moats, the team's strongest point was their willingness to work hard to improve. Coach Lester Moats commented, “The loss of Ma- linda Brown to injuries (both wrists) hurt our team tremendously. We missed her experience and leader- ship. When she was healthy, we were the only team to defeat Watauga. I look forward to a good season next year because all the players gained experience during the season. The team’s co-captains, Malinda Brown and Janet Stinson, jointly received the Most Valuable Player Award. The hours of hard work and practice paid off for the girls when they were presented the Award of Excellent for being the best squad at the camp. After returning home, the cheer- leaders prepared for the busy year ahead. Under the leadership of their new cheer- leading coach, Pat Beard, and the head cheerleader, Laurie Dunton, the squad helped boost school spirit by having pep rallies during school and by hosting a special community pep rally before one of the football games. The cheerleaders also made posters and spirit banners and practiced many long hours so they would be able to lead spirited cheers during both football and basketball seasons. 94 Varsity Cheerleaders AWARDED TOP HONORS Varsity Cheerleaders 95 JUNIOR VARSITY INDIANS With an overall record of 11-8 and a conference record of 6-4, the young Indi- ans experienced a satisfying year. Al- though the season was successful, the team had some disappointments. Losing in double overtime to Alexander Central and later dropping a two-point game to host Watauga kept the Indians from ty- ing for the conference championship. Speaking of his players, Coach Jim Woodruff commented, “This team defi- nitely improved during the season. They became more of a team-oriented outfit with balanced scoring and high assist numbers.” Team members agreed that their over- all winning record and their winning con- ference record as well as a long-awaited victory over the hosting Hickory High Tornadoes were pleasant rewards for long hours of practice and hard work. While the cheering never stopped during the four days at Furman, some of the girls commented, “Camp takes a lot of hard work and determination, but it's all worth while when you bring home that blue ribbon.” The industrious squad sold programs at varsity football games and cheered at the Homecoming pep rally and game. Academics 119 FACULTY LEAD STUDENTS Students found some changes this year in academ- ics. All were initiated into the semester system as opposed to the previous year-long system prevalent in the curriculum. At the end of the first semester in January, a student who had earned at least a “70” was given a ' 2 unit credit. Those who had not met performance standards received no credit and were notified that that semester’s work would have to be repeated. The new semester then gave students the opportunity to earn another ' 2 unit to complete the course or to simply pass the second semester so as not to have to repeat both terms in summer school or during the regular school year. New courses were added to the curriculum for the 1982-1983 academic year. College-Preparatory Eng- lish classes were introduced at the freshman, sopho- more, and junior levels. Latin was offered as a vo- cabulary enrichment class for the college-bound, and mathematics classes for the gifted and talented stu- dent were formed. As the year progressed, depart- ments met and discussed possible curriculum changes for the coming year. The academic year found changes in the guidance area also. In October an evening program on college admissions was given for interested parents and their students, and in February a meeting was held to in- form parents of changes in the curriculum and to orient them, as well as their youth, to the process of registration. The guidance department also spon- sored a Career Night in March to allow parents and students to hear presentations about various careers and to meet area personnel. The administration and staff worked to promote more simultaneous communication with parents and students so a better understanding of school happen- ings would be gained. Parent and community involve- ment was desired by the SSHS administration, and in-put or feedback was considerd important to the educational process. 120 Academics THROUGH EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES Academics 121 122 Academics Academics 123 124 Academics Academics 125 GAME POOM This year was one of the most important for the sen- iors. It was filled with many new privileges and chal- lenges. Filing into assemblies as underclassmen stood in honor, leaving five minutes early for lunch, and partici- pation in senior honor study hall were just a few of the privileges for the 1983 class. The seniors carried with them the sentimental remembrances of their last Home- coming and Prom and the thrill of finally ordering caps and gowns. Sitting on the junior balcony, receiving class rings, and driving to school highlighted these privileges. Academics played a more important role this year as juniors were chosen for Beta Club. Later in the year the top ten students of the class were selected as junior marshals. Of course, the long-awaited prom was hosted by the junior class for the seniors. The year ended with the anticipation of being seniors next year. The main item on everyone’s mind was Sweet 16 and getting that long-desired license. Classes were a lot harder this year, espe- cially biology, the subject most often com- mented about in the halls. Latin was offered for the first time and seemed to be a success. There were also many vocational classes tak- en — accounting, drafting, and typing, to name just a few. The ASY’AB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery), which gives the students an idea about what job areas they are inter- ested in and best adapted for, was taken. Most students agreed that this wasn’t one of the more popular liberties of being a sopho- more. Other exciting privileges for sophomores included ordering the traditional class ring, becoming eligible for more clubs and classes, and also being chosen as a waiter or waitress for the Prom. At the start of the year they had to deal with many frustrating situations such as difficulties finding their way around campus, having problems opening their lockers and having to deal with a more intense workload. Along with these aggravations came many enjoyable and memorable events such as meeting new acquaintances, attending the first high school dance, participating in Indian pep rallies, and also, for some, finally receiv- ing the privilege of being able to date. This year was an unforgettable one for the class of 1986 and also a preview of better years to come.
