Young Hillbillies Take Over SSHS Young hillbillies filled the halls as St. Stephens once again cele- brated Sadie Hawkins Day. The students, clad in anything from wigs to overalls to roller skates, began the day by comparing outfits and playing practical jokes. The festivities continued in an assembly as members of the R. H. Club presented country music and corny jokes. Even teachers left their usual dignified clothes at home and appeared in more appropriate costumes. A surprise star of the show was kazoo player Ed Tallman, whose outlandish dance won him the attention of pursuing female fans. From a lineup of nominees, Debra Conary and Chris Benfield were chosen as Daisy Mae and Lil’ Abner. I n the evening, students danced to the music of “Elias Dan” at the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance. Everyone not only enjoyed dressing like hillbillies, but also adopting the carefree spirit which accompanied the holiday. Debra Conary and Chris Benfield are given the titles of Daisy Mae and Lil’ Abner. A band dressed to fit the occasion, provided entertainment for the assembly, while several students gathered around on the floor. Even the teachers have fun by joining in the hillbilly festivities. Coach Tallman is making the most of the situation. 20
